The Federal Highway Administration says the design-build project was intended to add roadway capacity, improve safety, reduce major-maintenance demands and provide greater clearance for ships serving the Port of Charleston. Its listed cost was $675.2 million.
Why the Ravenel Bridge was built
The Cooper River Bridge Replacement project replaced the Grace Memorial and Pearman bridges on US 17. The Federal Highway Administration describes the earlier crossings as functionally obsolete. Rather than simply replacing them with another crossing of the same capacity, the project aimed to address both road traffic and the needs of vessels navigating the Cooper River.
- Road capacity and safety: FHWA lists increased roadway capacity and improved safety among the project’s intended benefits.
- Ship clearance: The new crossing was designed to increase vertical and horizontal navigational clearances for seafaring vessels serving the Port of Charleston.
- Maintenance: FHWA says the project was intended to reduce how often major bridge maintenance was needed and its cost.
These are benefits stated in the project profile; the available information does not provide a before-and-after study quantifying the results.
How the project was delivered and funded
FHWA identifies the Cooper River Bridge Replacement as a design-build project and lists Palmetto Bridge Constructors as the design-builder. WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff and T.Y. Lin International/HDR are among the partners named in the project profile.

Can you walk or bike across the Ravenel Bridge?
Yes, city transportation-plan material from 2018 describes a separated pedestrian and bicycle path along the bridge called Wonders’ Way. An SCDOT announcement from 2005 also described a bicycle and pedestrian path. These historical descriptions establish that the crossing has a path, but do not confirm present-day hours, closures, parking, or all access points.
Before planning a walk or ride, check current SCDOT or municipal information for access and any temporary restrictions. For driving conditions, the City of Charleston’s Traffic Management Center page says bridge and I-26 cameras monitor traffic and reports 12 cameras continuously monitoring the bridge. Camera monitoring is not a guarantee of real-time access information, so consult current official traffic updates before traveling.

What to know about inspections and traffic impacts
Bridge inspections can bring temporary lane closures. SCDOT’s notice of routine inspections scheduled for August 4–10, 2026, described expected minor traffic impacts; those dates have passed and are not a current closure alert. Check SCDOT’s current notices before setting out.
