Dress a staircase for Christmas with banister greenery, wall wreaths, ribbon, ornaments, and a few landing accents. The 40 ideas below combine those elements in different palettes and levels of fullness; they are inspiration, not tested installation plans. Choose attachments that suit the railing and finish, and keep the stairs, handrail, exits, and safety equipment clear.

Greenery on the banister
- Classic evergreen sweep. Drape a full green garland along the handrail, leaving the steps and graspable rail area clear.
- Slim, minimal garland. Use a narrow strand and let the banister’s shape remain visible.
- Alternating greenery. Attach short garland sections with open spaces between them for a lighter look.
- Asymmetrical swag. Gather the greenery into gentle dips between attachment points rather than pulling it taut.
- Greenery and twine. Tie the garland on with twine, using a suitable method for the railing and its finish.
- Warm-white glow. Weave warm-white holiday lights through the garland, following the strand maker’s connection instructions.
- Multicolor sparkle. Add multicolor lights for a brighter, more playful take on a green banister.
- Ribbon-wrapped garland. Weave shimmering ribbon through the greenery so it catches the light.
- Ornament clusters. Wire small ornaments into the greenery, spacing clusters along the rail.
- One-color ornaments. Choose ornaments in a single color for a coordinated, restrained accent.

- Single lantern and greenery. Pair one lantern with a small greenery accent, keeping foliage away from any burning candle.
- LED candles on a landing surface. Arrange battery-operated candles together as a low-maintenance focal point.
- Warm light at the landing. Use warm-white lights in landing greenery to complement a softly lit banister.
- Multicolor landing accent. Carry multicolor lighting from the banister to a small landing display for a livelier scheme.
- Coordinated ribbon trail. Repeat the banister’s ribbon color in a landing bow or wreath accent.
- Ornament bowl at the landing. Display a small bowl of ornaments on a stable surface, away from the stair edge.
- Greenery-free landing display. Use lanterns, LED candles, or ornaments without adding more foliage.
- Simple stair-wall and landing pairing. Combine wall wreaths with one restrained landing accent and leave the banister bare.

Choose a style that suits your staircase
There is no universally best greenery or lighting choice. Fresh foliage brings a natural appearance but needs attention as it dries; artificial garland can be reused. A minimal strand leaves more of the railing visible, while fuller garland makes a stronger visual statement. Warm-white lights tend toward a softer look; multicolor lights add more contrast. You can also make greenery the focus, or use it sparingly and let ribbon, ornaments, wreaths, or landing accents carry the design. Attach decorations without damaging woodwork
Twine can secure garland to a banister and may help avoid scratches on woodwork, as Lowe’s describes, but the right attachment depends on the railing’s shape and finish. Before decorating, check that ties, clips, or other removable fasteners are suitable for the surface. Avoid pulling greenery so tightly that it rubs the finish, and remove attachments carefully when the display comes down. Do not let garland, ribbon, or ornament hooks snag clothing or encroach on the handrail or stair treads.
Keep the staircase safe during the holidays
Preserve a clear route
- Keep steps, handrails, exits, and required safety equipment usable and visible.
- Place lanterns and other landing decorations where they cannot be knocked over or narrow the walking path.
- Do not drape greenery or ribbon where it can catch a person using the stairs.
Check lights and candles
- Inspect light strands before use and discard sets with frayed or pinched wires. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how many strands can be connected.
- Use safety-tested lights and extension cords rated for their intended use, as advised by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: Ten Tips to Keep Your Holiday Home Fire and Injury Free.
- Keep burning candles at least 12 inches from anything that burns. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends considering battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell, and feel like real candles: Holiday Fire Safety.
- For a staircase display, battery-operated candles avoid an open flame near greenery, ribbon, and ornaments.
Understand local requirements
Fire-code rules depend on jurisdiction and building occupancy. California Title 8 §3217 and the 2025 California Fire Code include requirements for certain decorative materials in specified stairways, exits, or occupancies, and prohibit concealing designated safety equipment. Why careful decorating matters
The U.S. Fire Administration says almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems, citing NFPA; its page was last reviewed December 8, 2023. The statistic concerns tree fires, not staircase displays. A National Park Service article citing NFPA reports about 790 U.S. home fires annually from holiday decorations excluding trees, with one civilian fire death, 26 civilian injuries, and $13 million in direct property damage; the publication year was not available in the source result, so those figures should not be read as current-year measurements. The NPS article is Fire Prevention 52: Deck the Halls Safely. Separately, a 2009 CPSC release said more than 14,000 people annually were treated in emergency rooms for holiday decorating-related injuries during the two months around the holidays. That is historical context, not a current rate.
