The familiar flamingo flower, usually Anthurium andraeanum, does best indoors in bright, indirect light, a warm and humid spot, and an airy potting mix that drains freely. Water when the mix is dry to the touch rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. Anthuriums are a large genus, so these directions are for the common flowering houseplant; other species and cultivars may differ.

Where should I put an anthurium?

Choose a bright spot with filtered light, such as near an east- or west-facing window or behind a sheer curtain. Strong direct sun can scorch leaves, while too little light can slow growth and reduce flowering. North Carolina State Extension notes that anthuriums in insufficient light grow more slowly and produce fewer blooms (North Carolina State Extension).

Keep the plant warm and away from cold drafts and direct heat. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends 18–30°C (65–86°F) year-round for Anthurium andraeanum; North Carolina State Extension gives a similar range of 65–85°F (RHS growing guide; North Carolina State Extension).

How often should I water an anthurium?

Check the potting mix instead of watering by the calendar. North Carolina State Extension advises watering when the soil is dry to the touch. How quickly that happens depends on the plant’s light, warmth, pot, and growing medium, so check it regularly and adjust to its drying rate.

Use a pot with drainage holes and empty excess water rather than leaving the roots sitting in it. A mix that holds some moisture but drains freely helps reduce the risk of root rot. For Anthurium andraeanum, RHS recommends rainwater or filtered water and watering sparingly in winter (RHS growing guide; RHS species profile).

What potting mix does a flamingo flower need?

Anthuriums prefer an acidic, open medium that retains some moisture but drains sharply. A ready-made mix is suitable only if it provides that combination. For Anthurium andraeanum, RHS specifies two parts peat-free ericaceous compost, one part horticultural grit, and one part orchid bark (RHS species profile). Orchid bark for anthurium potting mix is one ingredient in that recipe, not a complete substitute for the other components.

How can I provide enough humidity?

Anthuriums prefer humid air. Low humidity can contribute to brown leaf tips, particularly in a dry indoor environment. A moist-gravel tray is one suggested way to support humidity around a plant; keep the pot above the waterline rather than standing it in water. A room humidifier is an optional aid, not a requirement established by the care guidance.

How do I get my anthurium to bloom?

Start with bright, indirect light: inadequate light is a common reason for slow growth and fewer flowers. For Anthurium andraeanum, RHS recommends orchid fertilizer every two weeks from spring to autumn (RHS growing guide).

Bloom timing varies by plant. The University of Florida IFAS Extension says showy-flowered Anthurium species may bloom four to six times during the year, with each flower lasting about six weeks; that is a species-level reference, not a schedule guaranteed for every indoor plant (UF/IFAS Extension).

When should I repot or prune an anthurium?

RHS says anthuriums may remain in their original pot for a year or two, then be repotted every two or three years. Use a fresh, airy medium and a freely draining pot. Remove dead leaves and old flower stems at the base; routine shaping is not needed (RHS growing guide).

Why are my anthurium leaves turning brown?

Brown tips may point to low humidity, but they are not a diagnosis on their own. Check the plant’s conditions before changing its care:

  • Brown tips: Consider whether indoor air is dry; low humidity is one possible cause.
  • Scorched-looking leaves: Strong direct sun may be burning the foliage; move the plant to filtered light.
  • Slow growth or few blooms: Too little light may be contributing; try a brighter spot without exposing the plant to harsh direct sun.
  • Wilting or declining growth in persistently wet mix: Check drainage and watering, since overwatering and poorly drained medium can lead to root rot.

Also inspect for pests or leaf problems. RHS lists mealybugs, scale, and leaf spot; North Carolina State Extension recommends monitoring for mealybugs, spider mites, whiteflies, scale, aphids, and thrips (RHS growing guide; North Carolina State Extension).

Is anthurium toxic to cats or dogs?

Keep anthuriums away from children and pets. Eating the plant can be harmful, and sap can irritate skin or eyes. UF/IFAS identifies calcium oxalate crystals as a toxic principle; the cited care information does not establish a pet-specific clinical risk profile (UF/IFAS Extension). Wear gloves when pruning or handling sap, and contact a veterinarian or poison-control service if a pet eats any part of the plant.
