Amazon Astro review: What it is really like to live with Amazon’s home robot

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon Astro is best understood as a mobile Alexa display and home-monitoring camera—not a robot butler. Its autonomous navigation, moving camera, video calling and Ring integration are genuinely unusual, but the value depends heavily on your floor plan and whether you have a recurring reason to send a camera or screen into another room.

Astro is most compelling in a single-story, relatively open home used by Alexa and Ring owners. It is a poor fit for multilevel or cluttered houses, privacy-sensitive households, and anyone expecting cleaning, carrying, eldercare or dependable security coverage.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What Amazon Astro actually is

Astro combines a wheeled mobile base, a 10-inch touchscreen, Alexa, microphones, a periscope camera and autonomous navigation. Amazon announced it in September 2021 as an invitation-based “Day 1 Edition” experiment, rather than a conventional mature appliance. Its announced launch pricing was $999.99 introductory and $1,449.99 regular, with a six-month Ring Protect Pro trial; those were historical launch terms, not verified current prices. Amazon’s launch announcement should be consulted for the original details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important distinction is between sensing and communication versus physical work. Astro can move a camera, display, microphone and Alexa assistant around a home. It cannot manipulate the home around it.

  • Auto-Recharge, Always Ready: EBO SE automatically returns to its charging dock when power is low, ensuring your mobile companion stays energized and ready for your next remote visit whenever you need it
  • It cannot climb stairs.
  • It cannot open doors, cabinets or refrigerators.
  • It cannot pick objects up from the floor.
  • It cannot clean floors or perform repairs.
  • It cannot physically intervene in an emergency.
  • Its small cargo area carries only lightweight items; WIRED reported a payload of less than five pounds.

That makes Astro closer to a mobile smart display with cameras and mapping than to a general-purpose domestic robot.

What it can do around the house

Mobile visual check-ins

From the Astro app, an owner can send the robot to a room and view a live feed. This can be useful for checking a pet, looking at a suspicious noise, or seeing whether a particular room is occupied while away from home.

The advantage over a fixed camera is flexibility: one device can provide different viewpoints. The disadvantage is equally important: Astro may not reach the room, may be charging, may encounter an obstruction, and cannot guarantee coverage. It is a mobile viewpoint, not a complete security system or professionally monitored alarm.

The periscope camera

Astro’s periscope camera rises above the main body to inspect higher surfaces. Launch coverage described a view reaching approximately 42 inches above the floor. That can improve visibility of counters and some appliances compared with a camera mounted at floor level. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on coverage discusses this feature.

However, a higher camera does not give Astro hands. It can see a counter but cannot pick up what is on it, press a switch, open a cupboard or retrieve food.

Alexa, entertainment and reminders

Astro performs familiar Alexa functions: music and video playback, reminders, questions, smart-home control and calls. It can also follow a person between rooms, allowing the display and audio to remain nearby rather than staying on a kitchen counter.

This is convenient, but it is not automatically better than placing Echo devices or an Echo Show in the rooms where those functions are needed. Astro’s premium is mobility.

Video calling and remote presence

Astro can locate household members using Amazon’s visual-identification features and move toward them for calls or notifications. That may help a family communicate with someone who does not answer a stationary device.

It should not be confused with a dedicated telepresence robot. Astro is designed as a broader Alexa and home-monitoring product, and it is not a substitute for physical presence, supervision or professional care.

Ring patrols and investigations

Amazon described Ring integration that could allow Astro to patrol, investigate detected activity and save clips to Ring cloud storage when paired with the relevant Ring service. Availability and functionality depend on the applicable Amazon and Ring products, account configuration and region. See Amazon’s description of Astro and the current Ring plans page before relying on this feature.

Even with Ring integration, Astro cannot confront an intruder, lock a door, call emergency services by itself in every situation or guarantee that an event will be captured.

Carrying small items

The rear cargo area can transport a lightweight object on the same floor. This is a minor convenience or novelty feature, not autonomous delivery. A person must load the item, and Astro cannot retrieve it from a refrigerator, cabinet or floor.

Pet and person awareness

Amazon has promoted pet detection, visual identification and other AI-assisted features in later announcements. These should be treated as Amazon’s stated capabilities rather than proof of consistent performance in every home. Amazon’s 2022 Astro update provides the company’s description.

Living with Astro: setup, floors and furniture

Mapping is the first ownership test

Astro requires a guided tour to construct a map and learn room names. Hands-on coverage reported setup taking roughly 50 minutes, with the home needing to be prepared for mapping. That preparation matters: Astro must learn the home as it normally exists, not as it appears after an unusually thorough tidy-up.

Before buying, check the following:

  • Is most of the usable space on one floor?
  • Are there stairs, sunken rooms, split levels, high thresholds or stair-adjacent ledges?
  • Are there full-length mirrors, glass doors, glass walls or low windows?
  • Do toys, cables, laundry, shoes, pet bowls or furniture regularly block routes?
  • Can Astro reach its charging dock without moving furniture?
  • Are there rooms where a roaming camera should never go?

A PCMag review reproduced by MyDesignDept reported that mirrors, glass and low picture windows could interfere with mapping. In difficult layouts, the owner may need to alter the environment or repeat the mapping process.

Navigation is impressive but not universal

Astro’s navigation is its most technically interesting feature. Amazon says its Intelligent Motion system combines sensors, computer vision and mapping, with obstacle sensing, active braking, passive braking and stair detection. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee that every floor plan is safe or navigable.

Independent demonstrations found Astro capable of handling doorways and obstacles, while other hands-on accounts described problems with steps, ledges and unusual layouts. WIRED and Fast Company both illustrate why the correct conclusion is neither “Astro will inevitably fall downstairs” nor “stair detection makes any house suitable.” Astro still cannot travel from one floor to another.

It is deliberately slow

Astro moves conservatively. A briskly walking person can outpace it, and TechCrunch noted that increasing speed would create additional sensing and safety challenges. TechCrunch’s analysis is useful context.

That speed is acceptable for casual room-to-room communication. It is less useful when a user wants an immediate view of an event or expects the robot to reach a distant room quickly.

Charging reduces maintenance—but also availability

Astro returns automatically to its dock when the battery is low. A PCMag review reported approximately three hours off the charger during activities such as playing music. That is an individual review observation, not an official universal battery-life rating. Review details describe the observed behavior.

Automatic docking is convenient, but frequent patrols, live viewing, calls and movement reduce the time Astro is available. A blocked dock, changed furniture layout, pet or object in the route, or a robot that cannot find its dock can turn a useful feature into a maintenance problem.

The personality is part of the design

Astro’s animated eyes, sounds and screen movements make it feel more like a character than a camera on wheels. Amazon’s design team says personality was intended to make interactions more engaging and emotionally legible. Amazon Design explains the approach here.

That can encourage family members to use Astro. It can also make surveillance feel more personal and intrusive: a roaming camera with a face may be harder for guests, children or roommates to ignore than a fixed camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best real-world uses

  1. Mobile visual check-ins. This is Astro’s clearest differentiator, provided the home is flat, open and easy to navigate.
  2. Room-to-room communication. A moving screen and speaker can help when a person does not respond to a stationary device.
  3. Ring investigations. This is attractive for existing Ring households, but depends on supported services and subscriptions.
  4. Alexa access in different rooms. Useful if mobility matters; otherwise several fixed Echo devices may be simpler.
  5. Lightweight transport. Convenient in limited cases, but not meaningful household automation.
  6. Entertainment and novelty. Astro’s personality may be genuinely enjoyable, but novelty alone is a weak justification for a costly, complex device.

What becomes frustrating

Astro’s weaknesses follow directly from its design:

  • Multistory homes: it cannot use stairs, so every floor needs another solution.
  • Clutter: everyday objects can block routes even when the home is not unusually messy.
  • Reflective surfaces: mirrors and glass can complicate mapping.
  • Limited manipulation: seeing an object is not the same as reaching it.
  • Slow response: the robot may take too long to reach a room for time-sensitive checks.
  • Dock dependence: the robot is least useful when it is charging or cannot return home.
  • Subscription dependence: the most security-oriented functions may require Ring services.
  • Product risk: buyers must verify current availability, warranty, repairs, replacement, software updates and used-device policies before committing.

Online owner reports describe units losing mobility or requiring support intervention, but these are anecdotes rather than a measured failure rate. They are still a reason to investigate support terms carefully, especially when considering a used unit. Examples include discussions on long-term use and functionality problems.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Privacy: the camera is only part of the issue

Astro combines cameras, microphones, navigation sensors, a home map and optional person-recognition features. Privacy therefore deserves the same attention as navigation and price.

Amazon has stated that much of Astro’s processing occurs on the device, that images and raw sensor data used for movement are processed locally, and that facial-recognition data is stored locally. Amazon also says users can delete voice and home-map data and use controls to disable microphones, cameras, navigation and depth sensors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those statements should not be simplified to “nothing leaves your home.” Reporting has described navigation information being sent to Amazon’s cloud to create the map, with map data encrypted in transit and stored with access controls. WIRED and the PCMag review coverage provide important qualifications.

Before deployment, establish household rules about:

  • Who can access the Astro app and live view.
  • Whether guests, tenants and roommates consent to a roaming camera.
  • Whether bedrooms, bathrooms or children’s rooms are excluded.
  • Who can enroll household members in visual identification.
  • How long home maps and Ring video clips are retained.
  • What Ring cloud storage adds and what changes if the subscription is cancelled.
  • Whether the physical privacy controls are understood as disabling specific sensors, rather than every account or network function.

Astro may be a reasonable choice for a household that accepts these trade-offs. It is a poor choice where people are uncomfortable with indoor mapping, live viewing or a camera that can move without being physically carried.

Astro compared with simpler alternatives

Need Likely better first purchase What Astro adds
Check one room remotely Fixed indoor camera A camera that can move between rooms
Alexa and video calls Echo Show Mobility and room-to-room following
Clean floors Robot vacuum or mop Communication and monitoring rather than labor
Monitored security Ring services or a professional security system A mobile viewpoint, but no physical intervention
Remote presence Dedicated telepresence robot Alexa, home monitoring and Amazon ecosystem integration
Emergency support for an older adult Dedicated emergency or care service Calls, reminders and visual check-ins

For many homes, fixed cameras plus Echo devices and a robot vacuum will solve more practical problems for less complexity. Astro only makes stronger sense when the ability to move the camera and display is itself the requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price, availability and ownership risk

Astro’s original launch prices—$999.99 introductory and $1,449.99 stated regular—should not be used as current 2026 pricing. The product’s availability, warranty, subscription bundles and support policy can change, particularly because Astro began as an experimental Day 1 Edition product. Check the official Astro destination and current Ring terms before buying new or used hardware.

Used-device buyers should confirm that the unit can be registered to their Amazon account, that required services remain available in their region, and that warranty or repair coverage transfers as expected. Do not assume that a low resale price compensates for uncertain support.

Who should consider Astro?

Consider it if:

  • You already use Alexa and possibly Ring.
  • Your home is primarily single-story with wide, clear routes.
  • You have a specific recurring need for mobile visual checks or room-to-room calls.
  • You accept experimental hardware and possible long-term support uncertainty.
  • Your household agrees on camera, mapping and guest-privacy rules.

Skip it if:

  • You want cleaning, repairs, object retrieval or meaningful physical assistance.
  • You need reliable access across multiple floors.
  • You want a complete security or emergency-response system.
  • Your floor plan is cluttered, narrow, stepped or full of reflective surfaces.
  • You need dependable eldercare or medical supervision.
  • You want predictable value rather than an early-adopter experience.

Final verdict

Amazon Astro is clever, engaging and technically ambitious. Its mobility can make a camera, Alexa assistant and video-call screen useful in places where a stationary device cannot reach. But that benefit is highly dependent on the building: a flat, open, consistently navigable home is a much better environment than a multistory or cluttered one.

Buy Astro only if you can name a recurring problem that a mobile camera-and-display platform solves better than a fixed camera, Echo Show, robot vacuum, telepresence robot or care service. If you expect a robot butler, security guard, cleaner or caregiver, Astro will disappoint.
