Aldi’s REKA video doorbell launched in the UK at £16.99 on 23 October 2025. It offers battery operation, live view, night vision, two-way talk, motion notifications and local recording to a microSD card of up to 32GB, without a reported cloud subscription.
That price makes it dramatically cheaper than Ring, but it is not a like-for-like replacement. The reported 480p video is the key limitation, while the exact weatherproofing, battery life, app support and current availability remain unclear. Aldi’s product page was indexed at £16.99 but returned a 404 when checked on 18 August 2026, so it should not be assumed to be available today.

What is Aldi’s video doorbell?
The product was described as a REKA Video Doorbell in launch coverage, although Aldi’s indexed listing used the more generic name “No Brand Video Doorbell”. It was launched as a low-cost, battery-powered doorbell sold through Aldi’s UK operation, apparently as a limited retail item rather than a permanently stocked smart-home product.

The launch price was £16.99. Reports said it was available from Aldi stores from Thursday 23 October 2025. That is the launch position, not confirmation of current stock: the Aldi product listing was later indexed at £16.99 but returned a 404 when checked on 18 August 2026.

The strongest feature is local recording. The doorbell reportedly supports a microSD card of up to 32GB, so a cloud-storage subscription is not required for its core recording function. That is what Aldi’s “subscription-free” positioning means in practical terms.
It is not entirely cost-free. A compatible microSD card may need to be bought separately, and the available information does not confirm the exact card format, speed requirement, recording duration or what happens when the card is full. Buyers should check the manual before purchasing a card and should format it in the doorbell if the instructions require that.

Local storage has trade-offs. A 32GB card is modest by current security-camera standards, older footage may be overwritten, and the card can fail or be lost with the doorbell if the unit is stolen. Local recording also should not be treated as a backup unless footage is copied elsewhere.
480p is the biggest compromise
A reported resolution of 480p is low for a modern video doorbell. It may be sufficient to see that somebody is standing at the entrance, but it is much less suitable for identifying a face, reading a delivery label or inspecting a parcel.

Digital zoom cannot recreate detail that the camera did not capture. Night vision, poor lighting, movement and a weak Wi-Fi connection can reduce usable footage further. Good positioning and lighting still matter, but they cannot overcome the basic pixel limitation.
For context, TechRadar reported the Ring Battery Video Doorbell at 1440 × 1440, while eufy’s current UK doorbell range includes models advertising 1080p or 2K video. The Aldi model should not be described as HD or as offering Ring-level footage.
Aldi versus Ring
| Aldi/REKA | Ring | |
|---|---|---|
| Launch or listed price | £16.99 | Varies by model |
| Video | 480p reported | Current models include 2K and 4K options |
| Storage | microSD up to 32GB, according to launch coverage | Cloud event history through Ring Protect |
| Subscription | No subscription reported for local recording | Ring Solo costs £4.99 per month or £49.99 per year |
| Alerts | Basic push notifications reported | Eligible plans include person, package and vehicle alerts |
| Ecosystem | App and compatibility unclear | Established app and wider Ring range |
| Availability | Current stock unconfirmed | Established online product range |
Ring’s UK subscription plans currently list Ring Solo at £4.99 per month or £49.99 per year, Ring Multi at £7.99 per month and Ring Pro at £15.99 per month. Eligible plans can provide up to 180 days of video event history.

- AI-Powered Smart Detection: Advanced AI technology accurately identifies people while filtering out vehicles and animals, so you only get the alerts that matter most
- Secure Cloud Storage: Protect your recordings with AES-128 encrypted cloud storage
- Pre-Capture Recording: Cloud subscribers benefit from pre-capture functionality, ensuring the camera starts recording right at the moment motion begins - never miss a thing
- Reliable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Connection: Optimized for 2.4GHz networks to deliver stable, uninterrupted performance. (Not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi.)
- Exceptional Night Vision: Equipped with four powerful infrared LEDs and an advanced image sensor, providing sharp, detailed footage even in total darkness
The comparison is therefore about priorities rather than a simple winner. Aldi is cheaper and avoids a reported subscription, but Ring offers better-documented products, higher-resolution options, a more mature app and a broader ecosystem. Aldi undercuts Ring by stripping the product back to basic video-doorbell functions.
Does it need Wi-Fi?
Launch coverage says the doorbell uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and connects to a phone app. It should therefore be treated as requiring suitable home Wi-Fi for remote viewing, app setup and notifications. Bluetooth appears to be intended for setup or local communication, not independent internet access.
A weak signal at the front door can cause delayed notifications, failed live view or unreliable uploads. The exact Wi-Fi band and minimum connection requirements have not been confirmed. Check the signal at the intended mounting position before fixing the doorbell permanently.
It has not been verified whether this model continues recording locally or produces a physical alert during an internet outage. Do not assume that it will.
Weather protection and installation
The doorbell was described as water and dust resistant, but the precise IP rating was not available in the launch information. That is weaker than a published certification and does not mean the device is waterproof or suitable for every exposed installation.

Before mounting it, check:
- whether the doorway offers some shelter from driving rain;
- whether the charging port has a weather cover;
- the stated operating-temperature range;
- whether rain could affect the lens, microphone or button; and
- whether the warranty excludes water damage.
A sensible generic setup sequence is to charge the unit, install the manufacturer’s official app, pair it using the documented Bluetooth or app process, connect it to Wi-Fi, add a compatible card if required, and test live view, alerts, two-way audio, night vision and local playback before permanent installation. These are general steps, not a verified Aldi-specific menu guide.
Mount the doorbell where visitors’ faces are visible without strong backlighting, and test Wi-Fi from the final position. Keep the receipt and packaging, particularly if the product is a limited-run item with uncertain long-term support.

It can provide a basic visual check of the front door and may deter opportunistic behaviour by making visitors aware they are being recorded. It should not be treated as a complete security system or as a guarantee that an event will be captured and reported in time.
The 480p image may not be good enough for reliable identification. Battery depletion can stop the device operating, local footage can be lost through theft or card failure, and notifications depend on the app, Wi-Fi, internet connection and any supporting service continuing to work.

Who should consider it?
The Aldi doorbell is a reasonable fit if you:
- want the lowest possible upfront price;
- mainly need a basic visitor alert;
- accept 480p footage;
- prefer local storage to a monthly cloud fee;
- have reliable Wi-Fi at the front door; and
- can install it in a reasonably sheltered position.
It is a poor fit if you:
- need clear facial or parcel-detail footage;
- want person, package or vehicle recognition;
- need a published IP rating;
- require dependable long-term app and firmware support;
- need secure off-device backups;
- cannot regularly recharge a battery; or
- expect a guaranteed indoor chime or known accessory package.
Alternatives worth considering
Ring
Ring is the more established choice for buyers who value app support, a broad ecosystem and richer alert features. Its trade-off is recurring cost for cloud recording and enhanced functions. See the Ring UK doorbell range and Ring Protect plans for current models and pricing.
eufy Video Doorbell C30 or C31
eufy’s C30 and C31 are more expensive than Aldi’s launch price but are positioned around higher-resolution video, battery operation and local storage. eufy’s UK listings showed the C30 at £69.99 and the C31 at £89.99, with a higher-priced C31 bundle including a chime. Check the official eufy range for current prices and specifications.
eufy Video Doorbell E340
The E340 is not a direct budget alternative. eufy lists it at approximately £169.99 and positions it with dual cameras, 2K video, colour night vision, package monitoring and local storage. It is relevant only to buyers prepared to pay substantially more for better-documented capabilities.
Verdict
Aldi’s £16.99 doorbell is best understood as an ultra-cheap way to receive basic visitor alerts and save footage locally. Its subscription-free design is genuinely useful, but the reported 480p camera, limited 32GB storage, unclear IP rating and uncertain current availability are substantial compromises.
Buy it only if price matters more than image quality and long-term support—and only after confirming that it is actually in stock and checking the box contents. For clear identification, a better-supported app or a more dependable local-storage system, spending more on a model such as eufy’s C30 or C31 is likely to be the more sensible choice. It is not a true technical rival to Ring.
