Residential HVAC systems commonly use PSC, multi-speed or electronically commutated (ECM) motors for the indoor blower. ECMs may be constant-torque or constant-airflow designs, and those terms describe different control behavior. Outdoor condenser fan motors serve a separate purpose and vary by equipment. The right replacement depends on the specific system and motor—not just the motor category.
What are the different types of HVAC motors?
In a typical residential system, the indoor blower moves conditioned air through the ductwork. Its motor may use one fixed speed, several selected speeds, or electronic controls that adjust operation. The outdoor condenser fan instead moves air across the condenser coil; its motor and controls are specific to the equipment.
| Type | How it operates | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| PSC (permanent split capacitor) | Commonly runs at a fixed or selected speed. | Airflow may decline as system static pressure rises; the actual setup varies by equipment. |
| Multi-speed | Uses several defined speed or airflow settings. | The label describes available operating settings, not necessarily the motor’s construction or replacement compatibility. |
| Constant-torque ECM, often called X13 | An electronically commutated motor operating with torque behavior tied to selected airflow-control settings. | It is distinct from a constant-airflow ECM; the terms are not interchangeable. |
| Constant-airflow ECM, often called variable-speed | Adjusts speed and torque to maintain a target airflow as system resistance changes. | Holding airflow under higher resistance can require more fan power. |
| Outdoor condenser fan motor | Drives outdoor airflow across the condenser coil. | Design and control depend on the unit. Trane documents PWM-controlled ECM condenser fan motors for specified commercial units; that example does not describe every residential AC. |
Carrier’s air-handler guide describes common residential indoor blower categories. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) distinguishes constant-torque X13 ECMs from constant-airflow ECMs in its 2012 furnace-fan technical assessment.
What is the difference between a PSC and ECM motor?
Airflow response
A PSC blower commonly runs at a fixed or selected speed. If a dirty filter, restrictive ductwork or another condition increases resistance, its airflow can fall. DOE’s air-conditioner diagnostics guide discusses how static pressure and filter resistance affect PSC and variable-speed blowers.

An ECM is electronically controlled, but the name alone does not tell you how it responds. A constant-torque ECM and a constant-airflow ECM use different control behavior. A constant-airflow design can adjust its operation to maintain a target airflow as resistance changes, which may require increased fan power.
Energy use and savings
More control options do not guarantee a particular reduction in energy use or utility bills. Results depend on the equipment, control strategy, system design and operating conditions. DOE’s motor-savings report includes figures tied to particular equipment and assumptions, including room-air-conditioner fan and blower use; those figures are not a general estimate for central-air systems. No single savings percentage applies to all residential HVAC motor replacements.

What type of motor does an air conditioner use?
It depends on which fan you mean and on the system model. The indoor air handler or furnace uses a blower motor to circulate air through the home. The outdoor unit uses a condenser fan motor to move air across its coil. These motors perform different jobs and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Even within one application, the motor and its controls vary by equipment. For example, Trane’s service documentation describes PWM-controlled ECM condenser fan motors on specified commercial units. That example should not be generalized to residential air conditioners.

How do I choose a replacement HVAC blower motor?
Use the equipment model and motor specifications to establish fit and compatibility. “PSC” or “ECM” alone is not enough to select a replacement: the existing system’s configuration and controls matter. Carrier says its factory-authorized replacement parts are designed for specific systems.
- Identify the air-handler or furnace model and the existing motor’s specifications.
- Confirm that the proposed motor matches the equipment and its control setup.
- Have a qualified HVAC professional verify compatibility before replacement.
Motor repair or replacement involves high-voltage wiring. Carrier’s blower motor repair guidance says this work is generally best left to a professional HVAC technician.
