An air-conditioner isolator provides a way to disconnect equipment; it does not establish that the unit’s supply circuit can safely carry its electrical load. The right arrangement depends on the exact air-conditioner model, the circuit and conductors, installation conditions, and local wiring rules. There is no universal isolator amperage that can be chosen from the appliance category alone.
What an air-conditioner isolator does
An isolator is a switching means for disconnection. Depending on the installation, a suitable linked switch or circuit-breaker may provide that function; see Electrical Safety First’s BS 7671 wiring regulations guidance. An isolator is not a substitute for correctly designed conductors and overcurrent protection, and its presence does not prove the circuit is suitable for the equipment.
For fixed split or central air-conditioning systems, the disconnect arrangement and its rating must be matched to the unit and installation. The details belong to the equipment instructions and electrical design, not a generic rule of thumb.
What “electrical capacity” means
Capacity is not just the number printed on the isolator, breaker, or cable. It is whether the supply and complete installation can meet the unit’s electrical requirements safely. An electrician assessing suitability may need to consider the load, circuit type, and cable rating, as Electrical Safety First explains in its guidance on plugs and fuses.

- Equipment requirements: The manufacturer’s electrical data and wiring diagram apply to the exact model and system configuration.
- Circuit and conductors: The circuit’s type, conductor rating, and installation conditions affect whether it can supply the load safely.
- Protection and disconnection: Overcurrent protection and an appropriate means of isolation have distinct roles and must suit the installation.
- Rules and location: Local wiring requirements and the installation environment also matter. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal outdoor enclosure or IP rating.
Why there is no universal isolator rating
Air conditioners differ, so an isolator rating or breaker size cannot be selected from the words “air conditioner” alone. Toshiba Carrier’s R410A Multi Type installation manual defines minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) and maximum overcurrent protection (MOCP), and gives different values for different models. Those manufacturer values illustrate why ratings are model-specific; they are not values to transfer to another unit.
The same manual warns that insufficient power-circuit capacity or incomplete installation may result in electric shock or fire, and directs installers to follow national wiring regulations. Consult the exact unit’s nameplate and installation manual, but leave selection and installation of wiring, protection, and isolation to a qualified electrician.

Portable air conditioners are a separate case
Electrical Safety First lists portable air conditioners as typically using 900–2000 W and drawing up to 9.3 A; the page says higher-BTU models generally use more power. These are broad reference figures for portable appliances, not sizing values for fixed split or central systems. The page does not state a publication year. See its ratings of electrical appliances.
A portable unit plugged into a socket raises different questions from fixed equipment connected as part of an installation. Do not use the portable-appliance figures to choose a fixed system’s isolator, breaker, or cable.

Overload and electrical warning signs
A breaker that trips signals a problem to investigate, but by itself does not identify the cause. Excessive load, an electrical fault, or another installation issue may be involved. Other warning signs include burn marks, blown fuses, unusual heat, and buzzing or crackling that may indicate arcing. Electrical Safety First describes these hazards in its advice on overloading sockets and electrical safety at home.
- If a switch, plug, or appliance is hot, damaged, buzzing, crackling, or showing burn marks, stop using the affected equipment if you can do so safely.
- Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker, increase its rating, or bypass an isolator to keep the air conditioner running.
- Contact a qualified electrician to investigate the circuit, or the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician about the appliance. Electrical Safety First advises disconnecting an affected appliance and seeking appropriate assistance.
What to have checked
If you are planning an installation or are unsure whether an existing circuit can support the unit, arrange an assessment by a qualified electrician. Provide the exact model number and manufacturer installation instructions. The electrician can assess the equipment requirements alongside the circuit, conductors, protection, means of isolation, installation conditions, and applicable local rules.
