For architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) teams, artificial intelligence is becoming a set of task-specific assistants—not an autonomous project manager. The most credible uses reported in February 2024 are finding information, summarizing meetings, drafting text, comparing site images, flagging risk patterns and accelerating design or operational analysis. People still define the question, verify the output and make the accountable decision.
The evidence comes from interviews and company examples rather than controlled proof that AI improves every project. The useful question is therefore not “Where can we add AI?” but “Which recurring AEC problem has usable data, a measurable outcome and a safe review process?”

What kind of tool is AI becoming for AEC teams?
AI is best understood as a layer over existing project information and workflows. A model can search documents, identify patterns in images, turn conversations into notes or generate a first draft. It does not automatically know whether a drawing is current, whether a detected pattern is dangerous, or whether a recommendation fits a contract. Those judgments remain with the project professionals responsible for the work.

This framing avoids the “AI-enabled” label becoming a substitute for a clear use case. Skanska USA Emerging Technology Team Vice President Michael Zeppieri warned that “‘Al-enabled’ has become like ‘all-natural’ in the food industry.”
Where construction companies are applying AI
Safety observation and risk analysis
Suffolk’s reported 2018 test used the Newmetrix engine called Vinnie to analyze a decade of construction images alongside safety-incident histories. Oracle’s Josh Kanner said the test predicted 20% of incidents with 80% accuracy. That wording matters: it describes the share of incidents the test reportedly predicted and the test’s accuracy, not the prevention of 80% of all incidents.
The same article describes a separate, hypothetical projection for a company with at least 50 projects. Under an assumption that 25% of incidents were detected, Kanner estimated 40 to 100 incidents prevented and $1.4 million to $3.6 million per year in risk-abatement savings. Those are scenario figures, not observed savings. An alert can focus a safety conversation; it cannot replace a competent person, a site inspection or a control that removes the hazard.
Shawmut’s reported system analyzed uploaded images and produced weekly risk hot spots for teams to discuss. Chief Safety Officer Shaun Carvalho described it as “mostly observational; it’s completely passive and most employees don’t even know it’s happening.” Teams still need a process for confirming an observation, assigning an owner and recording the corrective action.
Document and knowledge retrieval
Two Gilbane project teams were reported to be piloting a large language model for construction-document retrieval. TrunkText was described as a text-message and web-app interface for asking project questions, while Suffolk had rolled out Microsoft Copilot connected to its SharePoint suite so field workers could find information.

- WORKS IN UNITS THAT WORK FOR YOU -- enter dimensions directly in feet, inches, fractions, yards and meters including square and cubic formats and then instantly convert to any standard building unit you prefer for consistent solutions that makes sense to you
- SET A PROJECT’S MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS to define and use stored values for estimating, including custom tile size, grout gaps, board widths, fence post spacing, paint coverage and more so you can quickly determine your material requirements and costs
- BUILT-IN FUNCTION KEYS help you easily find the number of boards or posts based on standard board lengths and stored measurements, so you get the fencing or decking material quantities you need to finish the job without costly overages or underages
- FIGURE OUT FLOORING REQUIREMENTS with built-in standard carpet roll lengths, linoleum square and roll sizes, custom tile sizes with various grout widths to quickly calculate coverage area and square yards you need based on an entered or calculated floor area
- Works directly in yards, feet, inches, fractions and meters – including square and cubic formats. No need to convert to decimals.
A retrieval tool is valuable only when it points to the right, current source. Configure permissions so a subcontractor or temporary worker sees only authorized material, and require the answer to identify the drawing, specification section, RFI or revision it used. If the system cannot show its source, treat the response as a lead for a human search rather than as project direction.
Meeting summaries and writing
LEO A DALY was reported to use Microsoft Copilot Chat for meeting-minute summaries and separate startup software for proposal writing. Turner demonstrated a tool that drafted trade contracts. These are “first-draft” applications: they reduce typing and organize information, but they can omit a qualification, assign an action to the wrong person or introduce language that conflicts with the contract documents.

Field imagery and changing conditions
LEO A DALY used AI to compare jobsite images with existing conditions and expectations, with interest in spotting changes such as earth movement or trenches. Image analysis can direct attention to a location or time period that deserves inspection. It is less reliable as a final determination because camera angle, lighting, occlusion, weather and incomplete coverage can change what the model sees.
Design iteration, scheduling and operations
Turner’s Engineering Group used AI to support rapid design iteration. Suffolk’s AI director worked with its design division on learning from feedback from past projects. Oracle was described as beta-testing a generative-AI scheduling prototype that could summarize requests for proposals. Gilbane Director of Operations and Technology Rawle Saw said, “We’re not quite there yet,” when discussing prediction of how many workers would be needed to complete part of a project on schedule.

These examples suggest a useful role for AI in exploring options and preparing information for a planner or designer. They do not establish that a generated schedule is feasible, that a design complies with every applicable requirement, or that a forecast will hold when crews, deliveries and weather change.

Specialist equipment and building features
Versatile.ai’s CraneView was described as a crane-hook device that captures jobsite data for performance and efficiency measurement. At Suffolk’s 634,000-square-foot 10 World Trade project in Boston, a robot was reported to print floor topography from coordinated layout drawings. These are specialist commercial systems, not general-purpose consumer products; their value depends on calibration, model coordination, site procedures and trained operators.
At Mountain View Village in Utah, the article described an Outside the Lines touchless water feature that uses machine learning to respond to a user’s presence, position and motion. This is an interactive building operation example rather than a typical document or productivity assistant, but it shows how AI can become part of an installed system after construction.
How to turn an AI idea into a responsible pilot
Start with the work problem and an observable result. Skanska’s reported screening criteria included the problem being solved, whether a similar product already exists, productivity impact, integration and learning curve. Bluebeam CEO Usman Shuja emphasized the pain point, the data required, implementation and adoption. Use those questions in this order:
- Define one recurring task. Write the current process, who performs it, how often it occurs and what goes wrong. “Improve safety” is too broad; “triage weekly site photos for open-edge conditions before the Thursday coordination meeting” is testable.
- Choose a measurable outcome. Possible measures include retrieval time, percentage of minutes approved without correction, inspection coverage, response time to an identified condition or hours spent preparing a proposal. Do not count an AI-generated output as a benefit unless the team can use it without creating more checking work than it saves.
- Inventory the data. Identify owners, formats, revisions, permissions, missing fields and retention rules. A model trained on incomplete incident histories or mixed drawing revisions can produce a confident but unusable result.
- Check the existing technology stack. Confirm how the tool receives documents, images or schedules and how its output returns to the system of record. An isolated dashboard that nobody opens is not workflow integration.
- Design human review before deployment. Name the person who verifies each output, the evidence they must inspect and the action taken when the output is wrong. For safety, define an escalation path that never waits for an AI score.
- Run a bounded pilot. Use a limited number of projects or a defined time window. Keep a baseline of the old process, record false positives and misses, and collect feedback from the people who must adopt the tool.
- Decide whether to scale, change or stop. Scale only if the outcome improves, the integration is workable, the review burden is acceptable and data handling meets company requirements. A pilot that disproves a weak use case is a useful result.
Data readiness is the gating factor
Interviewees repeatedly tied AI performance to the quality and quantity of project and design data. Before selecting a model, teams should be able to answer:

- Are drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, schedules and photographs stored in a consistent location with revision history?
- Can the system distinguish approved information from superseded or informal material?
- Are image dates, locations, camera direction and project phase captured well enough to support comparisons?
- Do incident and near-miss records use stable categories, or are the same event described in several incompatible ways?
- Can data be exported, corrected and deleted under the firm’s retention and contractual rules?
LEO A DALY Vice President and Chief Information Officer Stephen Held described the firm as “definitely in the trust-but-verify mode, because right now the industry is in a hype cycle,” and said, “AI-enabled text is coming along magnificently. But GenAI is a bigger challenge, partly because there’s not enough data to look at, so that models [created] aren’t consistent.” In practice, data cleanup and access controls may be a larger part of a pilot than model selection.
Prediction is not prevention
A prediction ranks a possibility; prevention changes the conditions that cause harm. If an image model flags a trench, a superintendent still has to confirm the condition, apply the site’s protective-system requirements and document the correction. If a schedule model forecasts a labor shortfall, the planner must test crew availability, sequence, access, materials and contractual constraints.
Keep these outcomes separate in dashboards and business cases:
- Detection: the system identified a pattern or condition.
- Verification: a qualified person confirmed whether it was real and relevant.
- Intervention: the team changed the work, design or process.
- Result: the project recorded the effect, including false alarms and missed events.
This chain prevents a model’s accuracy statistic from being presented as an incident-prevention rate or a projected saving from being presented as realized value.
Reliability, cybersecurity and accountability
Generative systems can invent citations, merge project contexts or produce inconsistent wording. Require source-linked answers for document questions, retain prompts and outputs where they affect a decision, and prohibit automatic release of safety instructions, contractual language or design changes.

Governance should cover who may upload project data, whether it is used to train a provider’s model, encryption and access logging, subcontractor and client permissions, retention and deletion, incident response, and the process for correcting an AI-generated record. Gilbane and LEO A DALY interviewees raised cybersecurity and data concerns; those concerns are operational requirements, not optional policy language.
Oracle’s Josh Kanner described the envisioned next horizon as technology that “puts humans at the center of checking the work.” That is a sound design principle: make review visible, give reviewers the evidence they need and keep a named person accountable for the final decision.
A practical decision framework for comparing tools
Use the same questions for a document assistant, image-analysis service, scheduling prototype or hardware system. A low price or impressive demonstration cannot compensate for a poor fit on these criteria.
| Criterion | Questions to ask | Evidence to request in a pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Problem and outcome | What recurring pain point is addressed, and what number should change? | Baseline and post-pilot measurements tied to the workflow |
| Data | What information is required, how complete is it, and who owns it? | Sample outputs using representative, permissioned project data |
| Workflow and integration | Where does the tool read and write information? | Demonstration in the systems and field practices teams already use |
| Adoption | Who operates it, what training is needed and what friction is added? | Usage rates, review time and feedback from field and office users |
| Reliability and review | How are errors, uncertainty and appeals handled? | False-positive and missed-case log with a named approver |
| Business impact | Does it affect productivity, risk or more than one part of the business? | Observable change compared with the old process, not a vendor projection |
| Governance | How are intellectual property, client data and cybersecurity protected? | Data-flow diagram, access controls, retention terms and incident process |
What success looks like
A successful AEC AI deployment is usually unglamorous: a field worker finds the approved detail faster, a coordinator receives a concise action list that is corrected and issued on time, or a safety team reviews a prioritized set of images instead of searching every file manually. The system earns a larger role only after it proves that it improves a defined process without weakening professional judgment.
For most firms, the best first step is a narrow, reversible pilot with clean data, a baseline and an explicit human sign-off. Treat forecasts as prompts for investigation, generated text as drafts and image alerts as observations. That approach captures AI’s current value while avoiding the more expensive mistake of allowing an unverified output to become a project decision.
