Activists Cite Ecological and Social Connections in Opposition to U.S. Border-Wall Construction

A tree-sit in Lochiel, Arizona, became a focal point of opposition to a planned double border wall through a stand of cottonwoods. In a commentary published October 8, 2026, Mongabay’s Meg Perret argues that the construction threatens more than trees: it could disrupt wildlife movement across the San Rafael Valley and strain social connections spanning the U.S.–Mexico border. The article’s incident details, particularly accounts from activists, should be understood as reporting attributed to its sources rather than as independently corroborated findings.

What happened at the Lochiel construction site

Perret places the protest near the San Rafael Valley and the U.S.–Mexico border in Lochiel, Arizona. According to her account, a tree encampment began July 28, 2026, after construction workers cut down three of four cottonwoods in the planned wall path. One activist reportedly remained for more than 70 days in the upper branches of an old cottonwood protesters called “Grandmother Tree.” Supporters used pulleys to bring food and water to the tree sitter.

The planned structure is described in the commentary as two parallel steel walls about 30 feet (just over 9 meters) high, with a buffer zone between them. Perret also describes the cottonwoods as 200 years old. These are figures reported in the article, not measurements independently verified here.

How the protest unfolded on both sides of the border

Perret reports a sequence of actions in Arizona and Sonora. The dates and enforcement details below reflect the commentary’s account and, where noted, statements from activists.

  • July 28, 2026: The tree encampment began in Lochiel after three of four cottonwoods in the planned wall path were cut down, according to the article.
  • August 18: A Mexican environmental activist occupied a neighboring cottonwood in Sonora and was forcibly removed, Perret reports. Local environmental activist Kate Scott described the action as “the temporary encampment was a strong signal of international solidarity.”
  • September 14: Protesters dressed as endangered species stood in front of construction machinery. Perret says three were arrested on allegations of disorderly conduct and released the following day.
  • October 5: Two anonymous activists interviewed by Perret reported a Border Patrol perimeter, detentions and citations, and the removal of the tree sitter before Grandmother Tree was cut down. One of the activists said the tree was “not only a symbol of the movement, but she was teaching us” and added, “for us, hope is not lost, because the land will regenerate.” These enforcement and removal details are attributed to those activists.
  • October 6: An activist occupied a cottonwood at La Noria, Sonora, called “Abuela.” The article said construction at that location had stopped at the time of publication.

Why activists argue a wall could fragment habitat

The ecological case described by Perret centers on the San Rafael Valley as a wildlife corridor connecting Arizona and Sonora. The author and activists name jaguars and ocelots as examples of wildlife moving across the border, and argue that a double wall could interrupt that movement and fragment habitat in a landscape they regard as ecologically continuous.

This is a concern about ecological connectivity: whether animals can move among habitats across a broader landscape. The commentary reports that argument, but does not quantify the wall’s effects on wildlife or provide a project-specific ecological assessment. It also does not establish that all local residents or Indigenous communities share the same position.

Why the dispute is also about social connections

Perret links the ecological argument to relationships among people who live, work, organize, or provide aid across the border. She reports that many participants are involved in No More Deaths, which provides aid to migrants, while other activists support the Tohono O’odham Nation’s efforts to stop construction on its Indigenous territory. The article presents these ties as part of the protest’s concern about border militarization and the effect of infrastructure on cross-border communities.

Protesters used endangered-species imagery and signs reading “migration is natural” and “migration is an earth right.” Perret reports support from advocates from Sierra Club, Sky Island Alliance, and Madrean Archipelago Wildlife Center; that reporting does not establish that those organizations endorsed every protest action.

What the article says about legal waivers

Perret says the U.S. Department of Homeland Security waived dozens of federal laws, including the Endangered Species Act, and describes the REAL ID Act as giving the DHS secretary broad authority to waive legal requirements to expedite border infrastructure. Her commentary is not the waiver notice or statutory text. It does not, by itself, establish which waivers apply to this particular project, their scope, or whether they remain in effect. Those questions require the relevant official records.

What is established—and what remains attributed

The commentary offers a snapshot of a conflict over a specific construction route and the ecological and social connections activists say it could disrupt. It reports a tree sit in Lochiel, a series of protest actions on both sides of the border, and an occupation at La Noria as of October 8, 2026. Its accounts of the October 5 enforcement activity come from two anonymous activists, and the article is the sole source available for this account; those details should not be treated as independently confirmed.
