Those steps can help the system run reliably, but they are not a substitute for diagnosis or repair. If you’re wondering, “How do I maintain my air conditioner, and when should I call a professional?”, start with the equipment maker’s instructions: filter type, replacement interval, clearances, and service procedures vary by system.
Check the air filter monthly
Find the filter using the equipment documentation or by checking its existing location. ENERGY STAR recommends inspecting it monthly. Clean it only if it is a reusable type; replace a disposable filter when it is dirty. ENERGY STAR’s general heating and cooling guidance says to change a dirty filter and, at a minimum, every three months. Heavy use, dust, pets, and other conditions may mean it needs attention more often, while the equipment maker’s instructions should guide the interval for your system.
A dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage equipment. The U.S. Department of Energy says routinely replacing or cleaning air filters can lower an air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5–15 percent; that is a potential range, not a guaranteed saving for every home. Choose a compatible replacement
Check the size printed on the old filter and confirm the type and airflow requirements in the equipment documentation before buying. A higher-rated filter is not automatically a better choice if it does not meet the system’s requirements. There is no single filter size or model that fits every air conditioner.

Keep the outdoor unit clear
For accessible outdoor equipment, look for leaves and other debris around the fan, compressor, and condenser area. Keep the area clear according to the manufacturer’s required clearance. DOE also recommends keeping drain channels clear. Limit this upkeep to visible, accessible areas: do not remove panels or work near wiring to clean the unit.
Notice symptoms without trying to diagnose the system
A clogged drain or dirty filter can contribute to problems, and a system that is not cooling may also have an accessible thermostat setting or sensor issue. You can check that the thermostat is set as intended and look for visible signs such as a dirty filter or water near a drain. These observations can help you describe the problem to a technician; they do not establish its cause. If the system continues to underperform, arrange a professional assessment rather than opening sealed equipment.

Arrange annual pre-season professional maintenance
ENERGY STAR recommends scheduling cooling-system service in spring, before contractors become busy during peak cooling season. A typical service checklist includes:
- Thermostat and system controls
- Electrical connections
- Condensate drain
- Evaporator and condenser coils
- Refrigerant charge
- Blower components and airflow

This is a reason to assess the equipment, not an automatic replacement rule; a professional can consider its condition and your circumstances. ENERGY STAR’s replacement guidance provides that advice.
