When you are still refining a design, draw it full size on paper or template material before transferring it to valuable stock. You do not need specialized equipment for many layouts.
Choose a method that matches the curve
A French curve is not a radius tool: its varied edges help shape small-to-medium flowing curves. For a constant-radius arc, set a compass to the specified radius. For a broad curve or large circle, use a flexible guide or extend the reach with a trammel. The right choice depends on both the geometry and the size of the work.

Develop the line at full size
When the curve is part of a design you are still refining, work on paper, cardboard, plywood, or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) rather than drawing directly on finished stock. Full-size layout lets you judge the shape in context and revise it before cutting.
- Draw the intended outline at full scale on template material.
- For a symmetrical shape, draw one half, cut it out, and flip it to trace the other side.
- For an ellipse, place two pins along the long axis, loop string around them, and use a pencil to keep the loop taut while drawing.
- Cut out the finished pattern and check it against the design and its measurements before using it.
- Trace the approved pattern onto the workpiece. Label and keep a sound template if you may need the shape again.
A cut template is especially useful when you need to transfer a line from a plan or repeat the same outline. For a dimensioned or production-critical part, verify the template against the specified measurements; a layout technique by itself does not establish machining accuracy.

Mark a freeform curve with a flexible guide
A flexible curve ruler can be bent to form or transfer a non-radius line. Set it to the line you want, check that the transition is smooth, then trace along its edge. If you are using a French curve, try different profiles to find a natural continuation; tape can mark the chosen start and end points when you need to repeat that shape.
For a long, broad arc through selected points, a flexible steel rule or thin strip of sprung wood can be bent through the plotted marks. Trace the edge only after checking that the guide sits smoothly through the points.

Lay out a known radius or large circle
Use a compass for a specified radius
Mark the center of the arc, set the compass span to the required radius, and draw the curve. The center and radius define the arc, so use the dimensions on the plan rather than estimating them from an unrelated template.
Extend the reach with a trammel
For a circle too large for an ordinary compass, trammel points or a simple homemade trammel extend the distance between the pivot and pencil. A narrow scrap-wood strip with a pivot nail and a pencil guide hole is one straightforward arrangement. Changing the hole locations changes the radius; keep the pivot secure and measure the pivot-to-pencil distance before drawing.

Keep the work in scope
This lesson concerns laying out curves for woodworking. Metalworking has its own marking procedures: for example, the National Instructional Media Institute’s Maintenance Mechanic (Chemical Plant) — 1st Year — Trade Practical (NSQF Revised 2022) teaches arcs and circles on metal using dividers and a scriber. Those instructions are specific to a metalworking exercise, not a general woodworking layout method.
