It is an inventive reuse project, but the reported details do not establish its capacity, cost, performance, service life or suitability for a home installation. The headline’s claim that it outdoes the competition is not supported by a measured comparison in the feature.
What the vape-cell battery project reports
Hackaday’s account says the battery bank uses 500 lithium cells recovered from disposable vapes. The builder reportedly rejected cells discharged below 3 V. That was his selection threshold for this project, not a general safety limit or a recommendation for other builders.
To screen found vapes, the account describes a homemade device that blows air through a vape and checks whether its light activates; a CPAP-machine pump was used in the test device. The feature does not say that this check measured a cell’s capacity, internal resistance or remaining service life.
The reported construction includes 3D-printed packs, fuses on each battery and fuses between packs. Those are design details reported by Hackaday, not evidence that the assembled system was independently tested, compliant with installation requirements or safe for residential use.

Does it beat a commercial home battery?
The available feature does not provide the measurements needed to determine that. It gives no verified usable energy capacity, delivered energy, output power, round-trip efficiency, installed cost or cycle life, and it does not compare the build with a commercial system under controlled, equivalent conditions.
Cell count alone cannot establish usable storage: the reported 500 cells do not tell a buyer how much energy the assembled system can reliably deliver. Nor does salvaging cells establish a cost advantage once controls, enclosure, protection, installation and other system components are considered.

A meaningful comparison for a construction or retrofit decision would need comparable figures for usable energy and output, efficiency, fully installed cost, warranted service life, applicable safety testing and installation requirements, plus repair and end-of-life options. Those values are not supplied for this project, so the headline should be read as a description of an ambitious build, not a substantiated performance verdict.
Why cell-level protection does not settle installation safety
Fuses can be part of an electrical protection design, but their presence alone does not establish that a complete battery installation controls every fault or meets applicable requirements. The project feature does not report an independent safety assessment or code-compliance finding.

UK government guidance for marine electrical installations describes a general lithium-ion hazard: “A key hazard of lithium-ion battery installation is that a single cell defect may cascade through a module, and an entire battery system, quickly turning into a thermal runaway event and a full fire incident.” This is a general warning in Maritime and Coastguard Agency guidance, not a finding about Doel’s battery. MGN 550 Amendment 1 concerns marine installations; it is useful context for the hazard, not a residential design specification.
For a building project, a salvaged-cell assembly should not be treated as a drop-in substitute for a professionally specified and installed home energy-storage system on the basis of this report. The report does not document the testing, installation assessment or performance information needed to make that case.

UK context: vape disposal and battery recycling
Electrical Safety First says disposable vapes have been illegal in the UK since June 2025. The same page reports Biffa data that more than 840,000 vapes were found at four waste sites between June and September 2025, averaging more than 7,000 a day. Those figures are attributed to Biffa via Electrical Safety First, not presented as an independent study by the charity. Its vape and e-cigarette advice provides further context.
Finding disposable vapes in waste does not make household dismantling or repurposing a safe recovery route. The Office for Product Safety and Standards warns that lithium-ion batteries can catch fire in household rubbish, particularly if damaged or wet. UK guidance directs battery waste to appropriate collection points; it says lithium-battery terminals should ideally be taped before collection, and vapes with batteries that cannot be removed should be handled as electrical products. Separate UK fire-safety advice notes that lithium packs, especially poor-quality, damaged or improperly used ones, can cause serious, rapidly developing fires and toxic fumes.
