Washing soda is sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃), an alkaline compound used in laundry and cleaning. At home, it is commonly added to detergent as a laundry booster. It is not baking soda: baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a different chemical.
What is washing soda?
Washing soda is the common household name for sodium carbonate, also called soda ash. Sodium carbonate can be sold in different forms, including anhydrous and hydrated forms, so products with similar names may not have identical formulations. Is washing soda the same as baking soda?
No. Washing soda is sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃); baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃). They are different compounds and are not interchangeable by name or presumed cleaning strength. ARM & HAMMER’s product-use guidance specifically cautions against confusing washing soda with baking soda.
How is washing soda used at home?
As a laundry booster
Washing soda products may be added alongside laundry detergent as a booster. For ARM & HAMMER Super Washing Soda, the manufacturer directs users to add ½ cup for a regular load, or 1 cup for a large, heavily soiled load or a hard-water condition. These amounts apply to that product; follow its package and your washing machine’s instructions rather than applying them to another formulation. Manufacturer directions also suggest testing fabric in an inconspicuous area before pretreating.

For selected household cleaning
The cited ARM & HAMMER guidance describes selected kitchen and home cleaning uses, but suitability depends on the surface and the specific product. Read the package directions before use; the manufacturer says not to use its Super Washing Soda on aluminum cookware. Do not assume that guidance applies to every sodium carbonate product.
Where else is sodium carbonate used?
Beyond household cleaning, sodium carbonate has industrial and water-treatment applications. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists glass, detergents, soaps, chemicals, and water treatment among its uses; in water, it can be used for pH adjustment and softening. EPA identifies glass manufacturing as the largest U.S. use in its profile, without giving a percentage in the cited summary. EPA’s sodium carbonate profile provides further detail.

What safety precautions matter?
Sodium carbonate is alkaline, and exposure can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Dust can be a concern, so handle powders gently and use ventilation without stirring up dust. Avoid eye contact and prolonged skin contact, and follow the precautions on the actual product label. PubChem’s compiled hazard references describe these irritation risks.
- Never mix household cleaning products. Poison Control’s cleaning-product guidance warns against mixing them.
- Keep powder away from eyes and avoid breathing dust.
- Check fabric and surface compatibility before applying a product, and use only on materials permitted by its label.
How should you choose a washing soda product?
Compare the actual ingredient and form, the intended uses, the package dose, the safety instructions, and compatibility with the fabrics or surfaces you plan to clean. Similar product names do not establish that two products have equal strength or can be used in the same way.
