SwitchBot Japan announced in April 2024 that Plug Mini devices in specified manufacturing-number groups had shorter-than-expected service life and a higher failure probability. The company did not identify a failed capacitor or say electrolytic capacitors caused the problem. “Cooking” electrolytics is a plausible general electronics failure mechanism, not a confirmed diagnosis of this smart plug.
What SwitchBot reported about the Plug Mini
In a Japan-specific notice dated April 16, 2024, SwitchBot said some Plug Mini manufacturing-number groups had shorter product life than expected and a higher failure probability than normal products. The listed numbers are printed in the model-information area on the side of the device:
- 2219, 2220, 2221, 2224, 2225, 2226, 2227, 2231, 2233, 2235
- 2236, 2237, 2239, 2240, 2241, 2245, 2252, 2309, 2310, 2313
The notice says these products were mainly sold from January through June 2023. It lists failure to power on, repeated intermittent on/off cycling, an indicator that does not light, and abnormal noise as examples of symptoms. The company said failures in the listed group had not caused serious incidents such as electrical shorts or fire; that statement is limited to the group covered by the notice.
What owners should do
- Read the manufacturing number in the model-information area on the side of the Plug Mini and compare it with the list above.
- If it matches, follow the manufacturer’s notice and contact SwitchBot support to confirm the available replacement or other remedy.
- If you are outside Japan, contact your local SwitchBot support rather than assuming Japan’s eligibility, remedy, or any deadline applies in your region. The notice does not establish whether its process remains open now.
SwitchBot’s Japanese product listing directs users with malfunctions or questions about replacement or refunds to submit feedback through the SwitchBot app and provides support contact information.

Could electrolytic capacitors be “cooking”?
It can happen in electronics generally. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors contain electrolyte that may leak or evaporate. KEMET’s Failure Analysis of Capacitors and Inductors explains that leakage can result from factors including a poor seal or vent, external damage, and high-temperature exposure. Electrolyte loss can leave a capacitor with low capacitance or high equivalent series resistance (ESR), potentially impairing a power supply’s output.
Nichicon’s Application Guidelines for Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors also describe degradation and pressure-relief vent operation. The guidance identifies stressors such as excessive voltage, reverse voltage, AC current, and ripple current that can generate heat or gas pressure. In that general sense, heat-related capacitor degradation is a credible way for electronic equipment to malfunction.
But those component-level mechanisms do not establish what happened inside a SwitchBot Plug Mini. The cited SwitchBot notice does not identify a capacitor, publish a teardown, or report measurements of a failed component. KEMET’s statement that electrolyte loss can produce “low or no capacitance” and/or “high ESR” describes aluminum capacitors generally—not this product’s failure.

Why the symptoms do not identify the failed part
A Plug Mini that will not power on, cycles repeatedly, has no indicator light, or makes abnormal noise has a malfunction; those symptoms alone do not reveal its root cause. A capacitor fault is one general possibility in electronic equipment, but the available product-specific evidence does not confirm it or establish a competing diagnosis. There is no published failure-rate percentage for the listed Plug Mini groups, either: SwitchBot’s notice gives only a comparative statement that their failure probability was higher than normal products.
Do not open or repair a mains-powered plug
SwitchBot’s Plug Mini safety guidance says not to disassemble, repair, or modify the device. Do not open it to look for a swollen capacitor or attempt a component replacement. The manufacturer also advises against use in hot, humid, or extreme environments, and warns against connecting appliances such as electric stoves or heaters that could cause harm if left unattended. For a listed serial number or a malfunction, use the manufacturer’s support route instead of attempting internal repairs.
