You can make DIY garden stepping stones by casting concrete in a reusable patterned mold, a form you make yourself, or a leaf used to create an imprint. The essentials are the same: follow the concrete mix’s label, add water gradually, protect the fresh casting while it cures, then bed and level each stone so it sits firmly underfoot. Choose a method based on the shape and finish you want, and space the path to suit your own stride.
Choose a casting method
Decide on the route and the look of the stones before mixing. A purpose-made mold creates a coordinated pattern; an improvised form gives you more control over shape or texture; and a leaf can leave a natural imprint. Whatever you choose, use a level work surface where fresh castings can remain undisturbed.

Compare the mold’s dimensions and reuse potential, the finish you want, and the handling involved. Also check that the concrete mix’s instructions suit your intended casting.
Gather materials and prepare the site
Set out the route, choose the casting approach, and establish a level place for mixing and curing. Keep the casting station separate from the final path so you can leave the stones undisturbed as they set.

- For a reusable mold: use a mold, concrete mix, mixing equipment, trowel, and shovel, as listed in QUIKRETE’s project instructions.
- For a textured form: use the selected form and any materials specified by its method; see Lowe’s textured-stone process.
- For a leaf imprint: the RHS project lists gloves, a container, a putty knife, cardboard, and sand. Follow its method for arranging the leaf and shaping the concrete. RHS project
- For mixing and placement: have eye protection, a respirator, and gloves available for concrete mixing, plus sand for bedding and leveling the path.
Mix and cast the concrete
Protect yourself and follow the mix label
Wear eye protection, a respirator, and gloves while mixing, as directed in Lowe’s project guide. Read and follow the current directions and safety information for the exact concrete product you buy; mixing and water requirements vary by product.
Add water gradually
Use concrete mix suited to the project and add water in stages according to its package directions. Do not make the mix runny simply to make it easier to pour: Lowe’s warns that excess water can weaken the finished stone. There is no universal water ratio or bag yield for every mold and mix. Fill and finish the mold
Fill the mold and level the exposed surface. Gentle movement or tapping can help release trapped air in the methods described by Lowe’s and Garden Molds. For an improvised texture or leaf impression, use the technique and materials specified for that method rather than assuming every mold is handled the same way.

Keep each casting level and protect it as the concrete mix’s directions require. Demolding is not the same as completing the cure: a stone may be firm enough to remove from its form before it is ready to install. Follow the selected product and method rather than treating any single schedule as universal.

Published project instructions illustrate why timing varies. Garden Molds describes waiting two days before demolding and then allowing additional curing; Lowe’s gives a staged schedule for its textured-stone process. These are examples for those particular methods, not a guaranteed timetable for every mix, casting size, or set of conditions.

Lay out and bed the path
- Arrange the stones on the ground. Walk the route and adjust the gaps until the spacing feels comfortable for your stride; avoid relying on a fixed measurement.
- Excavate each position. Make room for the stone and a sand layer beneath it, following the placement approach described by the RHS.
- Add and adjust sand. Use paver or leveling sand to help with drainage, stability, and leveling, as recommended by Lowe’s and the RHS.
- Set and check each stone. Press it into place, adjust the sand, and check that it does not wobble.
- Allow the stones to settle. Leave them to settle before walking on the path, following the RHS placement guidance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding too much water: follow the mix label and add water gradually; excess water can weaken the finished stone.
- Removing a stone too early: use the selected method’s demolding instructions, then allow the concrete to cure as directed before installation.
- Assuming a bag fills any mold: yield depends on the specific product and form. Use product-specific figures only when they match your mold.
- Skipping the spacing check: walk the laid-out route before digging so you can tailor the gaps to your stride.
- Leaving stones uneven or loose: adjust the bedding sand and check for wobble before allowing the path to settle.
