A sump-pump installation connects a collection pit to foundation drainage, then pumps collected water to a destination permitted by local rules and safely away from the building. The right location, a freely moving float, a properly routed discharge line, a sealed pit cover, and a successful water test are all essential. Exact pit dimensions, electrical protection, valves, and pipe details depend on the site, local code, and the pump’s current manual.
What a sump pump does—and what it does not
A sump pit collects water from the lowest portions of a home’s foundation drainage, such as footing drains or an interior drainage system. The pump moves that water through a discharge line to an appropriate destination. The Building America Solution Center installation guide says discharge may go to a storm sewer only where the municipality permits it, or to a dry well away from the foundation. Discharging beside the foundation can allow water to return to the drainage system.
A pump is one part of water management, not a universal fix for water intrusion. Site grading, gutters and downspouts, and exterior footing drains can also help protect a foundation. If water continues entering the basement, the source and the broader drainage system may need assessment.
Plan the installation before digging
Choose a location that works for drainage and service
The Building America Solution Center recommends locating the pit at the lowest floor location, near a wall that can accommodate an exterior discharge route and near an electrical outlet. Allow enough room for the pump, its float, and future removal. The float must be able to travel freely without catching on the basin, pipe, wiring, or cover.

Confirm the discharge destination and local requirements
Before work begins, check with the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) about permitted discharge locations and applicable plumbing and electrical rules. Storm-sewer connections are not automatically permitted. Plan a route that carries water away from the building and follows the pump manufacturer’s instructions for pipe routing and drainage after shutdown.
Match the pit and pump to the site and equipment
The basin must accommodate the pump and float without restricting movement. There is no single basin size, pump horsepower, or flow rate that can be recommended for every home: selection depends on site inflow, vertical lift, discharge-pipe length, and the pump’s specifications. Those details need to be established for the particular installation.

How a typical sump-pump installation proceeds
1. Prepare the opening and set the basin
In a retrofit, the Building America Solution Center guide describes excavating an opening 6 to 10 inches deeper and wider than the liner, adding gravel to the bottom, and setting the liner. For new construction, it describes a hole approximately the size of the liner. These are general approaches, not a substitute for checking the liner instructions and the home’s construction. Connect the pit to the perimeter drain or sub-slab gravel field using a method appropriate to the system; retrofit details vary with the house.
2. Set the pump on a suitable base
Follow the instructions for the exact pump model. For the cited RIDGID 1000RSDSSmart model, the installation manual directs the installer to place the pump on a solid, level surface—not directly on clay, earth, gravel, or sand. It also specifies rigid PVC pipe for a permanent installation. These are model-specific directions; use the current documentation for the pump being installed.

3. Install the discharge pipe and check valve
A check valve helps prevent water in the discharge line from flowing back into the pit after the pump stops. Configure and position it according to the pump manual and the piping arrangement. The cited RIDGID manual places its check valve just above the basin to allow service access; do not assume that placement applies to every pump or system. Keep the pipe clear of the float’s travel and route it so it drains as the manufacturer specifies.
4. Route water to a permitted destination
Direct the discharge to a destination allowed by local rules and away from the foundation. The Building America Solution Center identifies a permitted storm sewer or a dry well away from the house as possible destinations. Do not route water to a storm sewer unless the municipality allows it. A line that deposits water beside the home can contribute to water returning to the foundation drainage system.

- ENERGY SAVING & SAFETY: 100% manufacturer tested, low noise and energy saving. Built-in automatic thermal overload protects the motor from burning out when dry running
5. Provide the required electrical protection
Electrical requirements depend on the installation and jurisdiction. The Building America Solution Center notes that the outlet may need GFCI protection. The cited RIDGID manual requires a GFCI receptacle for that model and instructs users to follow the National Electrical Code and applicable local codes. Verify the current local requirements and the pump’s manual; do not treat one model’s instructions as a universal rule.
6. Seal the pit with a suitable cover
Use a tight-fitting, gasketed cover with mechanical fasteners, and seal penetrations and the cover-to-slab edge as appropriate for the installation. The Building America Solution Center’s sump-pump cover guidance explains that an open or poorly sealed pit can add water vapor and soil gases—including radon—to indoor air. A cover should remain removable for pump inspection and service while sealing the opening.

The 25 ft power cord increases the distance between the socket and the water to prevent electric shock
- Good customer service: If for any reason you're not 100% satisfied, please let us know and our customer service team will help you return or refund
7. Test the system with water
Add water as directed by the pump manual. Confirm that the float activates the pump, that the pump stops when the water level falls, and that water reaches the intended discharge destination away from the foundation. The Building America Solution Center’s installation guide states: “Test the sump pump system to ensure that water is properly discharged out and away from the building.” The cited RIDGID manual excerpt specifies at least 3 feet from the foundation for its described installation; that distance is model-specific guidance, not a universal legal requirement.

- Discharge: Ask the local AHJ where sump water may go. Storm-sewer rules and other drainage requirements vary.
- Electrical work: Confirm required GFCI protection and any other applicable electrical requirements for the location and equipment.
- Valves: The RIDGID manual says a gate or ball valve is needed where local, regional, or state code requires one. Check both local rules and the selected pump’s instructions.
- Cover requirements: The Building America Solution Center cover page summarizes gas-tight, removable sump-cover provisions in the 2009, 2012, and 2015 International Residential Code editions and mechanical attachment with a full gasket seal in ENERGY STAR Single-Family New Homes Version 3.0, Revision 11. These are historical edition and program references, not proof of what a locality currently adopts; verify the rules in force where the property is located.
Common installation problems to prevent
- Water returns toward the foundation: Reconsider the discharge destination and route; water released beside the house may re-enter the drainage system.
- The pump does not activate or stop correctly: Check that the float can move freely and test operation according to the manual.
- Water flows back into the pit after shutdown: Confirm the check-valve configuration and installation against the pump instructions.
- The pit is open or poorly sealed: Fit and secure a gasketed cover, and address penetrations and the cover-to-slab edge as appropriate.
- The pump or pipe does not fit the pit: Verify basin dimensions, pump clearances, float travel, and service access before completing the installation.
When to get site-specific help
Get a qualified installer or appropriate local professional involved when the drainage connection, excavation, discharge destination, electrical work, or code requirements are uncertain. A reliable design needs the site’s expected water inflow, vertical lift, pipe route, and applicable local rules; general guidance cannot establish a universal pump capacity or installation design for a particular house.
