How to Check Fit Before Construction

Measure the finished, usable cabinet depth, accounting for the face frame, doors, backsplash, wall irregularities, and outlet position.

Record the microwave body depth separately from the cabinet depth accepted by the manufacturer, the installed projection, and any required cutout dimensions.

For an over-the-range microwave, verify the specific model’s mounting, cooking-surface clearance, electrical, and venting requirements in its installation guide.

For a built-in microwave, compare the specified cutout and trim-kit dimensions with the cabinet plan. Do not infer fit from the body dimensions alone.

Use manufacturer dimension sheets as planning references, not as installation instructions. Whirlpool’s dimension guide says, “Do not make any cutouts based on this information.” Consult the exact installation guide before selecting cabinets or cutting openings.
Countertop, Built-In, or Over-the-Range?
A countertop microwave is not automatically approved for installation inside a cabinet. Check its instructions for clearances and airflow, and do not assume a trim kit makes a model suitable for a shallow enclosure. KitchenAid lists its KMCS122PBS at 18.3125 inches deep even though compatible trim kits are sold separately.

A built-in model also needs the specified opening, which may be deeper than the microwave body. For example, Summit lists its SMBI27TK27 at 19.63 inches deep as a body and specifies a 22.75-inch cutout depth. For an over-the-range model, use the manufacturer’s guidance for the particular upper-cabinet depth and installation configuration; a stand-out installation is different from a flush one.

Choose the model and any compatible trim kit before finalizing the opening. The body, cutout, trim, and ventilation requirements are separate specifications; a shallow cabinet may not accommodate them.
