A Whirlpool trash compactor is not a must-have appliance for every kitchen, but in the right home it solves a very real problem: too much bulky trash and not enough clean, convenient storage for it. The best Whirlpool trash compactor for most kitchen remodels is the 15-inch stainless GX900QPPS because it fits the standard built-in compactor opening, offers 1.4 cubic feet of capacity, uses 4:1 compaction, and has the straightforward controls most homeowners actually want. For a more seamless appliance wall, the TU950QPXS is the cleaner-looking integrated-control pick. For pantry, utility, garage-adjacent, or less custom installations, the GC900QPPB black and GC900QPPQ white convertible models make more sense.
That is the appliance answer. The construction answer is more specific: the right choice depends on whether you already have a 15-inch cabinet bay, whether the electrical is grounded and code-compliant, whether the drawer can open without blocking another workflow, and whether you are willing to give up base-cabinet storage for compressed trash. On our kitchen remodels, we treat a compactor like a small built-in appliance, not like a loose trash can. The cabinet opening, countertop support, receptacle location, flooring height, trim reveal, and bag-removal clearance all need to be planned before the cabinet order is final.
For 2026 budgeting, expect a simple replacement to land around $1,400 to $2,000 installed when the cabinet and electrical are already correct. A new opening with minor cabinet work commonly falls around $1,800 to $3,000. Once you add electrical corrections, countertop support, flooring transitions, custom panels, permit work, or finish carpentry, $3,000 or more is realistic. The appliance itself is often only part of the bill.
Best Whirlpool Trash Compactors at a Glance
Whirlpool’s current residential trash-compactor lineup is built around 15-inch undercounter and convertible models. This is not a category with dozens of new smart features. The meaningful differences are finish, control location, built-in versus convertible use, and how much finish work the installation will require.

| Model | Best For | Finish / Style | Typical Specs | Construction Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool GX900QPPS | Most kitchen remodels and stainless appliance packages | Stainless built-in / undercounter | 15 in. wide, 1.4 cu. ft., 4:1 compaction, 1/3 HP motor | Best mainstream pick when a 15 1/4 in. opening and proper outlet are available |
| Whirlpool TU950QPXS | Premium-looking kitchens with cleaner front lines | Stainless undercounter with integrated controls | 15 in. class, 1.4 cu. ft. class, sound conditioning on some listings | Good choice when appliance fronts and control visibility matter |
| Whirlpool GC900QPPB | Utility zones, pantry runs, garage-adjacent spaces | Black convertible | 15 in. class, 4:1 compaction, toe-touch opening on common listings | Better when freestanding or convertible placement is useful |
| Whirlpool GC900QPPQ | White kitchens, laundry-adjacent installs, budget-conscious remodels | White built-in / freestanding / convertible variant | 15 in. class, similar residential compactor format | Confirm kit, finish panel, and undercounter details before ordering |
If you are replacing an older Whirlpool, KitchenAid, or Kenmore-style 15-inch compactor, start with the GX900QPPS or the closest finish match. If you are designing a kitchen from scratch and want the front to look less interrupted, look at the TU950QPXS. If the compactor will sit outside the main cabinet run, the convertible models deserve more attention.
What Makes a Trash Compactor Worth It
A trash compactor is most useful when your waste stream is bulky but not messy. Think cereal boxes, snack packaging, takeout containers after they are emptied, paperboard, plastic wrapping, and general household packaging. It is less useful if most of your kitchen waste is wet food scraps, recyclables that need to stay sorted, or items that should never be compacted.
The strongest use cases we see are homes with long walks to the curb, limited garage trash storage, larger families, second homes where pickup timing is inconvenient, and remodels where a 15-inch cabinet can be traded for a cleaner waste-handling station. A compactor can reduce the volume of ordinary household trash by about 4:1 on common Whirlpool models. In plain terms, four bags of loose waste can often become one compacted bag, depending on what is inside.
That does not mean it replaces recycling. In a well-planned kitchen, we usually pair a compactor with a separate recycling pullout. Mixed recycling, cardboard, cans, and glass often need to stay out of the compactor depending on local rules and the material. If you compact everything together, you may reduce trash trips but create a sorting problem later.
The Best Overall Pick: Whirlpool GX900QPPS
The Whirlpool GX900QPPS is the practical first choice for many homeowners because it fits the familiar 15-inch built-in compactor category and comes in stainless steel. Retail listings commonly show 1.4 cubic feet of capacity, 4:1 compaction, a 1/3 HP motor, touch-toe opening, bag retainer buttons, and an anti-jam reversing ram. Those are the features that matter more than decorative extras.
From a builder’s standpoint, the GX900QPPS makes sense when the kitchen already has, or can easily receive, a standard compactor bay. Whirlpool’s installation dimensions list a typical product size of 15 inches wide, 34 1/8 inches high, and 24 inches deep. The cutout guidance is roughly 15 1/4 inches wide, 34 1/4 inches high, and 24 inches deep, with front clearance for the drawer. That extra quarter inch at the opening matters. A cabinet labeled as 15 inches wide is not always a finished 15 1/4-inch appliance opening after face frames, fillers, flooring, and scribe strips are accounted for.
Choose the GX900QPPS if you want a dependable stainless compactor in the main kitchen run, especially near the sink or cleanup zone. Avoid placing it where the drawer will fight the dishwasher door, oven door, main prep aisle, or a trash/recycling pullout. The compactor drawer needs about 23 inches of front clearance to fully open and remove the drawer, and Whirlpool also calls for about 6 inches of clearance on the right side for bag removal. In a tight galley kitchen, that can be the deciding factor.
Best Premium-Looking Pick: Whirlpool TU950QPXS
The Whirlpool TU950QPXS is the better fit when the kitchen design calls for a cleaner appliance face and less visible control clutter. It is still a 15-inch undercounter compactor, but its integrated-control look suits higher-finish remodels where the dishwasher, refrigerator, wall ovens, and drawer lines are being coordinated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Current retail pricing can run around $1,649 for this type of stainless undercounter model, compared with common GX900QPPS pricing observed around $1,250 to $1,400 depending on retailer and sale timing.

Integrated controls do not remove the need for construction planning. The appliance still needs the right opening, a properly grounded 115-volt circuit, correct leveling, and adequate drawer clearance. If the compactor is being installed under stone or solid-surface countertops, we avoid fastening methods that risk damaging the counter. Cabinet-face mounting is often the better approach when countertop mounting is not appropriate.
Best Convertible Options: Whirlpool GC900QPPB and GC900QPPQ
The Whirlpool GC900QPPB in black and GC900QPPQ in white are better choices when the compactor may not live in a fully custom undercounter appliance bay. Convertible models can make sense in a pantry wall, mudroom, laundry-adjacent zone, utility room, or garage-adjacent area where waste handling is useful but a stainless built-in kitchen look is not required.
These are still residential 15-inch compactors, so the same core fit issues apply. Do not assume convertible means careless. You still need a stable, level floor, a grounded receptacle, safe cord routing, proper air and drawer clearance, and a location where a heavy compacted bag can be removed without twisting around a door casing or cabinet return.

The white GC900QPPQ can make sense in older white kitchens, laundry rooms, or secondary spaces where matching the surrounding finish matters more than matching a stainless appliance suite. Before ordering either one, confirm whether the exact configuration you want requires additional installation hardware, trim, or conversion parts.
Cabinet Size, Cutout, and Clearance Requirements
The most common mistake is buying by the advertised 15-inch appliance width and assuming it will slide into any 15-inch cabinet space. On site, we measure the actual finished opening at the top, middle, and bottom, then again at the front and back. Cabinets can be out of square, face-frame lips can steal width, and new flooring can reduce height under the countertop.
Whirlpool’s typical product dimensions for these compactors are 15 inches wide, 34 1/8 inches high, and 24 inches deep. The minimum cutout guidance is about 15 1/4 inches wide, 34 1/4 inches high, and 24 inches deep. The installation diagram also shows an 18-inch minimum opening depth in the electrical/cutout planning area, but a real kitchen layout should account for the full appliance depth, plug, cord path, back wall, and finished front alignment.
Plan for at least 23 inches of clear space in front of the unit so the drawer can open fully and be removed. Also plan for about 6 inches of right-side clearance for removing the compacted bag. If the unit is tight against a wall, tall pantry panel, refrigerator panel, or island end panel, bag removal can become awkward even when the appliance technically fits.
Where We Place Compactors in a Remodel
The best location is usually near the cleanup zone, not the cooking zone. A compactor beside or near the sink can catch packaging and post-meal waste without crossing the kitchen. However, it should not interfere with the dishwasher door. In many kitchens, a sink base, dishwasher, trash/recycling pullout, and compactor all compete for the same 6 to 8 feet of cabinet run. That layout needs to be drawn, not guessed.
In islands, we check aisle width with the compactor drawer open. A 42-inch aisle can feel comfortable until a 23-inch drawer is extended into it. In a galley kitchen, the compactor may be better at the end of a run or in a secondary cleanup area. In a large kitchen, we often keep recycling near the main prep sink and put the compactor closer to the exit path to the garage or mudroom.

Electrical Requirements and Permit Notes
Whirlpool specifies single-phase 115-volt, 60 Hz AC power on a 15- or 20-amp fused, properly grounded circuit. The manufacturer recommends a separate circuit serving only the compactor. That recommendation matters during a remodel because kitchen circuits are often already carrying dishwashers, disposals, undercabinet lighting, small-appliance loads, or older wiring that no longer matches current expectations.
We evaluate the circuit before cabinets are closed. Adding or relocating a receptacle after countertop installation is almost always more expensive. It can also force access holes, drywall repair, cabinet modifications, or a surface-mounted workaround that should have been avoided during rough-in.

In some areas, a like-for-like appliance replacement may not require a permit, while a new receptacle, new circuit, panel work, or cabinet remodel may. If an electrician is opening walls, pulling a new circuit, or correcting ungrounded wiring, assume permit rules need to be checked locally.
Outlet Placement
Whirlpool calls for a grounded outlet located at least 3 inches away from surrounding cabinets or nearby walls. The outlet must be reachable by the appliance cord without being crushed behind the unit. We do not bury cord connections where the compactor cannot be serviced. The appliance should be removable for maintenance without dismantling the kitchen.
Installed Cost in 2026
The cost to install a Whirlpool trash compactor depends less on pushing the appliance into place and more on what has to happen around it. A straightforward replacement into an existing, correctly sized opening with a proper grounded outlet can be relatively simple. Creating a new opening inside a finished kitchen is different work.
| Project Type | Typical 2026 Budget | What Is Usually Included | Main Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple replacement | $1,400-$2,000 installed | Appliance, basic removal, slide-in installation, leveling, connection to existing outlet | Old opening is not square or floor height changed |
| New opening with minor cabinet work | $1,800-$3,000 | Appliance, cabinet modification, trim, leveling, basic electrical verification | Countertop support and finish matching |
| Electrical, flooring, or custom finish corrections | $3,000+ | New or relocated receptacle, circuit correction, cabinet rebuild, panel/trim work, flooring transitions | Permit delays, inspection corrections, custom parts |
National benchmarks support those ranges. Homewyse’s May 2026 estimate starts around $1,437 to $3,001 per compactor for basic professional installation under favorable conditions. HomeAdvisor reports an average installed cost around $1,900, with most homeowners spending $1,100 to $2,700 and complex jobs exceeding $3,200. Appliance-only Whirlpool pricing commonly appears around $1,250 to $1,650 for current stainless models, depending on model and retailer.

Consumables should be part of the budget. Fifteen-inch compactor bags are heavier than standard kitchen trash bags and cost more. One appliance-parts listing shows a 15-pack of Whirlpool-compatible bags at $27.83. That is not a huge expense, but it is ongoing, and using thin standard bags is a good way to create leaks, tears, and cleanup work.
When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
A capable homeowner can sometimes handle a like-for-like replacement if the old compactor already worked properly, the opening is correct, the outlet is grounded and in good condition, and no cabinet or flooring changes are needed. The work still requires care. The appliance is awkward, finished flooring can be scratched, and the unit must be leveled so the drawer and toe guard operate correctly.
DIY is reasonable when you are replacing a 15-inch compactor with another 15-inch model, the circuit is already correct, the floor is flat, the countertop and cabinets are not being modified, and you can move the appliance without damaging the control panel or door front. Whirlpool’s instructions specifically caution against lifting by the control panel, and we follow that on site because appliance fronts are not handles.
Hire a pro when you need to remove or alter base cabinets, cut face frames, modify fillers, support a countertop after cabinet changes, add or relocate an outlet, address GFCI or grounding issues, handle stone-counter fastening constraints, correct uneven flooring, or match custom panels. If the compactor is part of a larger kitchen remodel, it should be included in the cabinet and electrical drawings from the beginning.

- Reduce trash volume by 66% after compaction. 8 gallons (30L) in size, 24 gallons (90L) in capacity when compacted
- Take out trash less often and use fewer liners, saving you time and money

- Hygienic and mess-free - Only the inside of the trash bag touches the trash while compacting, leaving you with clean hands and a clean trash can
- Won't tear your liners - Titan's anti-tear design won't stretch or pinch the liner. It's compatible with standard plastic liners but extra-strong IW4 custom-fit liners are also available for added peace of mind
The gray area is the “simple” swap that reveals old problems. We often find compactors installed on flooring that stops at the cabinet toe line, which leaves the appliance sitting in a recessed pocket. When the new unit has to slide out for service, it catches on the flooring edge. The fix may involve shimming, floor infill, or a new transition detail. That is not difficult work, but it is easier to handle before the appliance is scratched or jammed in place.
Safety and What Not to Compact
A trash compactor applies mechanical force to household waste. That makes it useful, but it also means certain materials do not belong inside. Do not compact hazardous, flammable, explosive, or toxic materials. Do not put in hot ashes, lit cigarettes, aerosol cans, oily rags, solvents, paint waste, chemicals, batteries, or pressurized containers. Avoid excessive glass. Broken glass inside a compacted bag can puncture the liner and create a handling hazard.
Wet food waste is another practical problem. A compactor can crush it, but that does not mean it should sit there for days. Odor is the main complaint when compactors are used like a sealed food-waste bin. If your household produces a lot of wet scraps, use the disposal where appropriate, compost where available, or take food waste out regularly. The compactor is best for dry or mostly dry non-recyclable waste.
Use the key or knob controls as intended, especially in homes with children. Do not overload the drawer. If the ram reverses or the unit resists compaction, stop and clear the problem according to the manual rather than forcing another cycle. The anti-jam reversing ram is a helpful feature, not permission to use the appliance as a crusher for anything that fits through the opening.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How We Specify a Whirlpool Compactor in a Kitchen Remodel
Our process is simple because the expensive mistakes are predictable. First, we confirm the homeowner’s waste habits. If they mostly need recycling space, we specify a recycling pullout instead of a compactor. If they have bulky dry trash and want fewer bag changes, a compactor earns its cabinet space.
Second, we choose the location on the cabinet plan. We check the sink, dishwasher, oven, refrigerator, island aisle, and main prep path with doors and drawers open. A compactor drawer that blocks the dishwasher during cleanup will irritate the homeowner every day.
Third, we verify the opening. For Whirlpool’s 15-inch models, we plan around a roughly 15 1/4-inch minimum width, 34 1/4-inch minimum height, and 24-inch depth. We also check finished floor height, toe-kick alignment, adjacent panels, and whether a filler is needed for a clean reveal.
Fourth, we plan electrical early. A 115-volt, 60 Hz, 15- or 20-amp grounded circuit is the baseline, and a separate circuit is recommended by Whirlpool. If the existing outlet is wrong, we want that corrected during rough-in, not after cabinet installation.
Fifth, we protect the finished surfaces during installation. Compactors are heavy enough to damage floors and awkward enough to chip cabinet edges if rushed. We protect the flooring, avoid lifting by the control panel, set the unit level, secure it properly, and test the drawer, ram cycle, controls, and bag retainer before calling the job complete.

Final Recommendation
For most homeowners asking for the best Whirlpool trash compactor, the answer is the GX900QPPS. It is the most practical stainless built-in choice, has the core performance numbers that matter, and fits the way most 15-inch compactor openings are planned. Choose the TU950QPXS when the front appearance and integrated controls justify the higher appliance price. Choose the GC900QPPB or GC900QPPQ when convertible placement, utility-room use, or a non-stainless finish is the better fit.
The larger point is that a trash compactor is a construction decision as much as an appliance decision. Get the cabinet opening, outlet, drawer clearance, right-side bag clearance, and floor condition right before the unit arrives. Done well, it can make a kitchen cleaner and more efficient. Done casually, it becomes a noisy, awkward 15-inch cabinet that everyone works around.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Whirlpool trash compactor for a kitchen remodel?
For most remodels, the Whirlpool GX900QPPS is the best overall choice because it is a 15-inch stainless built-in model with 1.4 cubic feet of capacity, 4:1 compaction, and a 1/3 HP motor. The TU950QPXS is better when integrated controls and a cleaner front matter more.
How much does it cost to install a Whirlpool trash compactor in 2026?
A simple replacement commonly runs about $1,400 to $2,000 installed. A new opening with minor cabinet work is often $1,800 to $3,000. Projects with electrical corrections, countertop support, flooring work, or custom finish panels can exceed $3,000.
What size opening does a Whirlpool 15-inch trash compactor need?
Whirlpool’s typical unit dimensions are 15 inches wide, 34 1/8 inches high, and 24 inches deep. Plan for a finished opening around 15 1/4 inches wide, 34 1/4 inches high, and 24 inches deep, plus about 23 inches of front clearance for the drawer.
Does a Whirlpool trash compactor need a dedicated circuit?
Whirlpool specifies a single-phase 115-volt, 60 Hz AC supply on a 15- or 20-amp fused, properly grounded circuit and recommends a separate circuit serving only the compactor. An electrician should evaluate older, shared, or ungrounded kitchen circuits.
Can a Whirlpool trash compactor be freestanding?
Some Whirlpool compactors are convertible or listed for built-in and freestanding-style use, including models such as GC900QPPB and GC900QPPQ. Other models are primarily undercounter. Confirm the exact model, installation kit, and clearance requirements before buying.
