For most homes, the best place to start is a correctly sized furnace filter with the highest efficiency rating your HVAC system can handle. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends at least MERV 13, or the highest rating the system accommodates. If your system cannot use that rating, a compatible lower-rated filter is preferable to one that restricts airflow or does not fit.
“Furnace-mounted air purifier” can mean a replacement filter, a deeper media-filter cabinet, or an electronic or UV device installed in ductwork. They are not interchangeable: each has different fit, maintenance, and performance considerations, and central-system filtration works only while the HVAC system runs.
What counts as a furnace-mounted air purifier?
These products connect to a forced-air heating and cooling system, usually at the return duct or filter slot. They treat air moving through the central system rather than cleaning a single room independently. A portable air cleaner, by contrast, is designed for a room or area.

The EPA cautions that some electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, plasma cleaners, and UV lights without adequate lamp coatings may have the potential to emit ozone. It also says it does not endorse manufacturer claims that a particular product makes indoor air healthier. Evaluate specific, documented performance claims rather than broad health promises.

How to choose a furnace filter your system can handle
Start with MERV, then verify compatibility
MERV—the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value—is a standardized rating for how well a filter captures particles in specified size ranges. A higher MERV rating generally indicates better capture of those particles, but it does not prove the filter will fit or work properly in a particular system. The EPA recommends choosing at least MERV 13, or as high as the HVAC fan and filter slot can accommodate. A technician can assess the system and, in some cases, determine whether it can be modified to accept a more efficient filter.
MERV is not the only rating label you may see. The EPA describes MERV as based on a national consensus standard, while FPR and MPR are proprietary rating approaches. Do not treat numbers on those different scales as directly interchangeable.

Match the actual filter-slot dimensions
Check the dimensions of the installed filter or the HVAC manufacturer’s instructions, then match the replacement to the slot. The filter should sit snugly without bending or crushing, with no visible gaps that let air pass around it. A high-rated filter that is the wrong size can allow bypass leakage and may not deliver the intended filtration.
Ask about airflow resistance when upgrading
A filter’s rating is only one part of the decision. A higher-efficiency filter can add resistance to airflow, so check the equipment specifications or ask an HVAC technician whether the fan and filter slot can handle the proposed filter. Do not assume that a higher MERV number is automatically the best choice for every furnace.

When a media-filter cabinet makes sense
A deeper media cabinet is an option when you want a duct-mounted housing for replaceable filter media and the system has room for compatible installation. Resideo’s Honeywell Home product literature lists F100 media cleaners at MERV 11 and F200 at MERV 13, with sizes and replacement media varying by model. These examples illustrate the category; they do not establish that either cabinet fits every system or is currently available in every market.
Before choosing a cabinet, confirm the duct dimensions, installation space, system airflow requirements, exact media size, and availability of replacement media. The Resideo listing for model F100F2028/U describes a 16-by-20-inch, 4-inch, MERV 11 cleaner for installation in the return-air duct, but says that specific model is Canada-only and no longer available for purchase. It should not be treated as a currently purchasable U.S. option.

How often to replace or maintain the system
The EPA says manufacturers typically recommend replacing furnace or HVAC filters every 60 to 90 days, but actual dirt loading varies. Follow the filter and appliance manufacturers’ directions; replace the filter sooner if it appears heavily soiled or the instructions call for a shorter interval. Media cabinets also need the compatible replacement media specified for their model, while electronic and UV devices may have separate cleaning or service requirements.
What whole-house filtration can—and cannot—do
Central HVAC filtration treats air only while the system is operating. The EPA notes that, in many cases, HVAC systems run less than 25% of the time during heating and cooling seasons; this is a general observation, not a measurement for every home. Running the fan longer may increase electricity use and can make humidity control less reliable during cooling. Continuous fan operation is therefore not a universal recommendation.

A furnace filter is not a substitute for a portable cleaner when the goal is to clean one room independently of HVAC operation. Choose an approach based on the area you want to treat, how the HVAC system operates, and the equipment’s verified compatibility and performance.
