A slimline dishwasher can be the difference between a small kitchen that works and one that constantly piles up with plates, mugs, and pans. In the U.S. market, “slimline dishwasher” usually means an 18-inch-wide dishwasher, not the 45 cm European category. That 6-inch difference from a standard 24-inch dishwasher sounds small, but in a galley kitchen, condo, basement apartment, ADU, wet bar, or vacation rental, it can save an entire base cabinet.
The best slimline dishwasher for most permanent small kitchens is an 18-inch built-in model with a stainless tub, Energy Star certification, a noise rating under 50 dBA, and simple rack geometry that fits real dishes. For renters or temporary layouts, an 18-inch portable dishwasher often makes more sense. Countertop dishwashers are the smallest option, but they are a compromise: useful for light daily loads, less useful for cookware, tall plates, or a kitchen that sees regular cooking.
On our job sites, the appliance choice is only half the decision. The opening, drain path, water supply, electrical protection, countertop, toe-kick, and adjacent cabinet layout determine whether the dishwasher looks intentional or squeezed in after the fact. This guide covers the best slimline dishwasher categories, what to buy, what to avoid, and what installation really costs in 2026.
What Counts as a Slimline Dishwasher in the U.S.?
In U.S. appliance aisles, the practical slimline category is the 18-inch dishwasher. Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Best Buy commonly group compact built-in dishwashers around 18 inches wide, while standard built-ins are about 24 inches wide. The actual cutout dimensions vary by model, so never frame or modify cabinets from the label alone.

- Heated Dry : Smart dishwasher ensures the best drying performance. The extra drying function offers a thorough drying performance (except for the Rapid and Self-clean cycle) with no additional towel drying required.
- HI TEMP : The HYGIENE wash cycle maintains the water temperature at 136°F (58°C) max , which can tackle even the heaviest soiled dishes. It is also suitable for cleaning baby bottles and children's dinner sets.
A typical 18-inch built-in dishwasher needs an opening close to 18 inches wide, about 32.5 to 35 inches high depending on the model and leg adjustment, and roughly 24 inches deep. Many ADA-height models are designed for shorter openings, which can be helpful in older kitchens, accessible kitchens, and remodels where the finished flooring or countertop height limits the available space.
The capacity tradeoff is real. Lowe’s notes that standard 24-inch built-in dishwashers typically hold about 12 to 16 place settings, while compact 18-inch models can hold up to about 10 place settings. Many specific 18-inch models list 8 place settings. For one or two people, that can be plenty. For a family cooking nightly, it can mean running the machine daily or still hand-washing pans.
Best Slimline Dishwasher Types
There is no single best compact dishwasher for every small kitchen. The right choice depends on whether the kitchen is permanent, rented, under construction, or already finished.
Best Overall: 18-Inch Built-In Dishwasher
An 18-inch built-in dishwasher is the best slimline choice when you are remodeling a kitchen, building an ADU, converting a basement suite, or upgrading a compact condo kitchen. It installs under the counter, ties into the sink plumbing, connects to a dedicated or properly protected electrical supply, and gives the kitchen a finished look.
In 2026 retail listings, many 18-inch built-ins fall roughly between $400 and $1,100. Budget models, including entry-level compact stainless-look units, can appear around $399.99. Premium compact models, such as Bosch 300 Series 18-inch units, can list around $1,099. Best Buy listings also show 15- to 18-inch stainless built-ins from brands such as Samsung around $809.99 and Haier around $944.99.
For most homeowners, we would rather see money spent on a stainless tub, quieter operation, solid racks, and dependable service access than on smart features. Wi-Fi does not make a compact dishwasher load better. Good rack design does.
Best for Renters: 18-Inch Portable Dishwasher
A portable dishwasher is the right answer when you cannot cut cabinets, alter plumbing, or commit to a permanent appliance. Most portable units roll to the sink, connect to the faucet with an adapter, drain into the sink, and store against a wall or at the end of a cabinet run.
Current 2026 pricing for 18-inch portable units often runs about $599 to $990. Best Buy listings, for example, have shown SPT portable 18-inch dishwashers around $599 and GE portable models around $989.99. The higher price compared with some built-ins reflects the finished cabinet shell, casters, hoses, and faucet-connection setup.
The drawbacks are floor space, sink access, hose handling, and noise. A portable dishwasher is not as visually clean as a built-in, but for rentals, offices, temporary housing, and kitchens awaiting a later remodel, it can be the least disruptive option.
Best for No-Construction Situations: Countertop Dishwasher
A countertop dishwasher is the smallest option. It works best for apartments, break rooms, small offices, and very light cooking households where no cabinet modification is practical. Some connect to the faucet; others include a fill tank.
The limitation is capacity. Dinner plates, mixing bowls, cutting boards, and pans can be awkward or impossible depending on the model. We treat countertop dishwashers as convenience appliances, not full replacements for a built-in dishwasher in a kitchen that sees regular cooking.
Quick Comparison: Built-In vs Portable vs Countertop
| Type | Best Fit | Typical 2026 Appliance Cost | Capacity | Construction Impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18-inch built-in | Small kitchens, ADUs, condos, wet bars, permanent remodels | About $400-$1,100 for many models | Often 8-10 place settings | Requires cabinet opening, plumbing, drain, and electrical planning |
| 18-inch portable | Renters, temporary kitchens, offices, layouts where cabinets cannot be altered | About $599-$990 | Similar to many compact built-ins | No permanent cabinet work, but needs storage and faucet access |
| Countertop | Very small apartments, light daily dish loads, no-construction situations | Often less than built-in or portable units | Smallest capacity | Usually no cabinet work, but uses counter space and sink access |
| 24-inch built-in | Families, frequent cooks, kitchens with enough room | Wide price range by brand and features | Typically 12-16 place settings | Standard dishwasher opening required |
If a 24-inch dishwasher fits without hurting the kitchen layout, it is usually the better long-term appliance. Choose an 18-inch unit because the space calls for it, not because it sounds automatically cheaper. Cabinet labor can erase the savings quickly.

What to Look for in a Good 18-Inch Dishwasher
Measure the Finished Opening, Not the Old Cabinet
Before ordering, measure the finished opening after flooring and countertop conditions are known. Record width, height, depth, toe-kick depth, baseboard conflicts, water line location, drain location, outlet or junction box location, adjacent drawer pulls, and the full door-swing path.
This matters most in remodels. We often find old flooring trapped under a previous dishwasher, countertops set slightly low, or cabinet faces that are not square. A dishwasher that fits on paper can still bind against a tile edge, rub a drawer pull, or sit proud of the cabinet face.
Choose a Noise Rating That Fits the Room
Noise ratings are measured in dBA. For a small or open kitchen, use these thresholds:
- Under 45 dBA: very quiet and appropriate for open living spaces.
- 45-50 dBA: reasonable for most kitchens.
- Above 50 dBA: noticeable, especially in condos, galley kitchens, and small apartments.
Many premium 18-inch models advertise mid-to-high 40s dBA. Examples in the market include Bosch 18-inch models around 46 dBA and GE Profile compact models around 47 dBA. Budget compact dishwashers may be louder and may also have fewer drying, rack, and filtration features.
Prioritize the Tub, Racks, and Filter
A stainless steel tub usually improves durability, drying performance, and sound control compared with many plastic-tub designs. For rentals and ADUs, we look for durable racks, accessible filter cleaning, simple controls, and parts availability. A tenant or guest should not need a manual every time a filter needs rinsing.
Rack layout matters more in an 18-inch dishwasher than in a full-size unit. Bring measurements from your actual plates, bowls, glasses, and pans. If your dinner plates are 11 inches wide or your household uses tall water bottles, confirm they fit before buying.
Check Energy Star, but Understand the Numbers
Energy Star’s current dishwasher criteria became effective July 19, 2023. To qualify, compact dishwashers, defined as less than 8 place settings plus 6 serving pieces, must use no more than 155 kWh per year and 2.0 gallons per cycle. Standard models must use no more than 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle.
Energy Star says a new certified dishwasher uses less than half as much energy as hand-washing and can save 8,400 gallons of water per year. In real homes, savings depend on cycle selection, water heater efficiency, whether you scrape or pre-rinse, and whether you run full or partial loads. Modern dishwashers are generally designed for scrape-not-rinse use unless the manufacturer says otherwise. Heavy pre-rinsing wastes water and can reduce the benefit of sensor cycles.
Best Slimline Dishwasher Picks by Situation
Best for a Permanent Small Kitchen: Quiet 18-Inch Built-In
For a small kitchen that will be used every day, start with a built-in 18-inch Energy Star model under 50 dBA. Look for a stainless tub, adjustable upper rack, fold-down tines, a leak sensor, and a filter you can remove without tools. Expect the appliance itself to land around $700 to $1,100 for a stronger midrange or premium compact unit.
This is the category we would specify for a condo remodel, ADU kitchen, in-law suite, or small primary kitchen where every inch of base cabinet counts. Place it next to the sink whenever possible. Short supply and drain runs reduce cabinet disruption and make service easier later.
Best Budget Choice: Basic 18-Inch Built-In
If budget is the driver, entry-level 18-inch built-ins can start around $400. These can be sensible in a light-use kitchenette, basement bar, office, or guest suite. The compromises are usually louder operation, plastic tub construction, simpler racks, and fewer drying features.

Do not put the entire decision on purchase price. A $400 dishwasher that needs $500 in cabinet, electrical, and drain work is not a $400 project. It is a compact appliance inside a small construction job.

Choose a portable unit when permanent modification is off the table. It is also useful during phased remodeling, where the final kitchen layout is not ready but the household needs a working dishwasher now.
Expect to pay about $599 to $990 for many 18-inch portable dishwashers in 2026. Check faucet compatibility, hose length, storage location, caster quality, and whether the door can open fully without blocking the main walkway. In small apartments, the storage footprint can matter as much as the wash performance.
Best for Wet Bars and Bonus Rooms: Compact Built-In With Simple Controls
Wet bars, pool houses, theater rooms, and bonus rooms do not need the most complicated dishwasher on the market. They need a compact unit that handles glasses, appetizer plates, coffee cups, and small serving pieces without demanding a large cabinet run.
For these spaces, a quiet 18-inch built-in with a stainless tub and short cycle option is usually enough. If the wet bar is far from the main plumbing wall, price the rough-in before buying the appliance. Long drain runs, slab conditions, or finished basement ceilings can move the project from simple to expensive.

What Installation Really Costs in 2026
For an 18-inch dishwasher, the installed cost often lands around $400 to $1,500 or more, including the appliance. A straightforward replacement at an existing opening sits near the low end. A new installation with cabinet modification, plumbing, GFCI updates, air-gap work, and countertop drilling moves toward the high end.
| Cost Item | Typical 2026 Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 18-inch built-in dishwasher | About $400-$1,100 | Premium, panel-ready, drawer, and luxury compact models can exceed this range. |
| Basic installation labor | About $144-$300 | Applies mainly to simple replacements with usable plumbing and electrical already in place. |
| Install materials | About $45-$90 | May include supply line, shutoff valve, hose clamps, fittings, drain parts, cord kit, or electrical whip. |
| Removal and haul-away | About $50-$150 | Depends on retailer, municipality, stairs, and delivery bundle. |
| Cabinet modification | About $150-$400+ | Includes fillers, toe-kick adjustment, resized opening, side panels, or converting a base cabinet. |
| Permit fees | About $60-$180 | Varies heavily by city, county, and project scope. |
| Total installed project | About $400-$1,500+ | New rough-ins, electrical work, stone drilling, or custom panels can push costs higher. |
The hidden cost is usually not the appliance. It is making a small opening look like it was always meant to be there. In a former cabinet bay, a clean 18-inch dishwasher installation may need balanced filler strips, a finished side panel, toe-kick continuity, and careful alignment with adjacent doors and drawers.
Cabinet and Countertop Details That Make or Break the Job
A slimline dishwasher is narrow enough that bad layout decisions show immediately. A crooked filler, mismatched toe-kick, or door that clips a drawer pull will bother you every time you unload dishes.
Plan the Opening Around the Sink
The best location is usually directly next to the sink. That keeps the hot-water supply, shutoff, drain connection, and dishwasher discharge hose short. It also makes loading easier because plates can move from sink to dishwasher without crossing the kitchen.

When the dishwasher must sit farther away, confirm the manufacturer’s drain-hose limits and local plumbing requirements. Do not assume a long hidden hose run through multiple cabinets is acceptable or serviceable.
Use Fillers Intentionally
If you are converting a wider cabinet space, do not leave a random gap. Use finished filler strips that balance with the rest of the cabinet run. Sometimes the best-looking solution is an 18-inch dishwasher plus a narrow tray base, spice pullout, or finished filler panel rather than an awkward leftover strip.

Toe-kick continuity also matters. The bottom line of the cabinets should carry across the dishwasher bay cleanly. On remodels, we check whether the finished floor extends under the appliance area. If it does not, future removal can become difficult because the dishwasher may be trapped behind the flooring edge.
Coordinate Air-Gap Holes Before Drilling Stone
Some jurisdictions require a dishwasher air gap. Others allow a high loop under the sink cabinet. The International Residential Code includes dishwasher waste connection provisions, and local amendments can be stricter. Before anyone drills granite, quartz, or solid surface material, confirm the local rule and coordinate the hole location with the faucet, soap dispenser, reverse-osmosis faucet, sprayer, and countertop warranty requirements.

Electrical, Plumbing, and Safety Notes
Dishwashers combine water, electricity, heat, and moving parts in a confined cabinet opening. Treat the installation as real mechanical work, not just appliance delivery.
Electrical requirements vary by model and jurisdiction. Many modern codes require GFCI protection for dishwashers, and the 2023 National Electrical Code expanded GFCI attention for appliances. Whether protection is provided by a GFCI receptacle or breaker depends on the installation and local code. If the existing circuit is old, shared, ungrounded, or difficult to access, bring in a licensed electrician.
On the plumbing side, use a reliable shutoff valve, proper supply connector, secure drain routing, and the required air-gap or high-loop arrangement. If the dishwasher drains through a garbage disposal, the disposal knockout must be removed. This small step is missed often enough that it deserves a direct check before the first test cycle.

A careful homeowner can handle some dishwasher replacements, but an 18-inch slimline installation often crosses into cabinetry, plumbing, and electrical work. The dividing line is whether the space and utilities already fit.
DIY Can Make Sense When
- You are replacing an existing 18-inch dishwasher with a similar model.
- The shutoff valve works and is accessible.
- The electrical connection is already code-compliant for your area.
- The opening is square, level, and within the manufacturer’s stated dimensions.
- No countertop drilling, cabinet cutting, flooring correction, or new drain routing is needed.
Even then, budget time for setup, leveling, leak testing, and cleanup. A simple replacement can take 2 to 4 hours for someone who is careful and has the right tools.
Hire a Pro When
- You are creating a new dishwasher opening from a base cabinet.
- The dishwasher needs a new electrical circuit, GFCI protection, outlet relocation, or hardwire change.
- The water shutoff is corroded, frozen, leaking, or missing.
- Your jurisdiction requires a permit for the plumbing or electrical work.
- You need an air-gap hole drilled in stone or solid surface countertop.
- The finished floor traps the old appliance or changes the available height.
- The installation is in an ADU, rental, or permitted remodel where inspection matters.
For a construction project, the best time to solve these details is before cabinets are ordered. The second-best time is before the appliance is delivered. Waiting until delivery day usually costs more.

A slimline dishwasher is not automatically better because it saves space. It is the wrong choice when the household regularly cooks for three or more people, uses large dinnerware, washes sheet pans often, or has room for a standard 24-inch model without compromising storage or circulation.
Best Value
- Slimline Design with Large Capacity: This 18-in COMFEE' built-in dishwasher boasts a slim body that takes up minimal space and is easy to fit. It features a digital control panel with an LED display and has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate larger plates, pots, and pans.
- 8 Place Settings: Measuring 22.6"D x 17.6"W x 32.4"H with adjustable legs, this compact under-sink/built-in dishwasher delivers a spacious and flexible interior for maximum loading capacity. The upper rack features an adjustable height mechanism (up to 1.97 inches) to easily clear deep pots and various cookware, while the lower rack can hold extra-large plates and oversized dishware up to 13.78 inches in height.
- 6 Wash Cycles + 3 Functions: This 18-inch dishwasher offers six versatile wash cycles, including Heavy, Normal, Eco, Delicate, Quick, and Rinse. It also features Heated Dry, Hi-Temp, and Sanitize functions that meet all your daily needs. Note: ONLY use detergent specially for dishwasher because regular liquid dish soap will cause dishwasher problems.
- Heated Dry: This smart dishwasher ensures optimal drying performance every time. The advanced heated drying function delivers a thorough, cabinet-ready dry (available on all cycles except Rapid and Self-Clean), completely eliminating the need for towel drying.
- Hi-Temp: The Hygiene wash cycle boosts and maintains water temperatures up to 136°F (58°C) to effortlessly tackle even the most heavily soiled dishes. It is also perfectly suited for the deep cleaning of baby bottles and children's dinnerware.
It can also be the wrong choice when cabinet modification becomes too expensive. If converting the opening requires custom millwork, countertop alteration, electrical upgrades, and plumbing relocation, a compact dishwasher may cost nearly as much as solving the layout for a standard unit. In some kitchens, a better cabinet plan finds 24 inches without sacrificing function.
For families, frequent entertainers, and serious home cooks, capacity usually wins. A 24-inch dishwasher holding 12 to 16 place settings reduces the number of loads, fits larger items, and provides more rack flexibility. An 18-inch model works best when the kitchen and household are genuinely compact.

For most small kitchens, the sweet spot is a quiet, Energy Star 18-inch built-in dishwasher with a stainless tub, clean controls, and a well-planned cabinet opening. For renters, choose portable. For very light use with no construction option, choose countertop. For households that cook heavily and have the space, choose 24-inch and do not look back.
The best slimline dishwasher is the one that fits the kitchen, the household, and the construction reality at the same time. Get those three right, and the kitchen feels cleaner, works faster, and gives back storage and counter space every day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a slimline dishwasher in the U.S.?
In the U.S., a slimline dishwasher usually means an 18-inch-wide dishwasher. Standard built-in dishwashers are about 24 inches wide. Always check the exact cutout dimensions for the specific model before modifying cabinets.
Is an 18-inch dishwasher big enough for a family?
Usually not for a family that cooks daily. Many 18-inch dishwashers hold about 8 place settings, with some compact models reaching about 10. A standard 24-inch dishwasher typically holds about 12 to 16 place settings.
Recommended Free Tools
How much does it cost to install an 18-inch dishwasher in 2026?
A typical 2026 installed cost is roughly $400 to $1,500 or more, including the appliance. Simple replacements cost less, while new plumbing, GFCI electrical work, cabinet modification, air-gap work, and haul-away increase the total.
Do I need an air gap or is a high loop enough for a dishwasher?
It depends on your local plumbing code. Some jurisdictions require an air gap mounted at the sink or countertop, while others allow a high loop under the sink. Confirm the rule before drilling a countertop, especially stone.
Does a dishwasher need GFCI protection?
Many modern code applications require GFCI protection for dishwashers, and local requirements can vary. If the existing circuit is older, shared, ungrounded, or hard to access, have a licensed electrician verify the setup.
Are countertop dishwashers worth it?
Countertop dishwashers are worth considering when cabinet or plumbing changes are not practical. They are best for light daily loads, apartments, and offices, but they do not match the capacity or finished look of an 18-inch built-in dishwasher.
