Should You Add Epsom Salt to Your Compost Pile?

Most home compost piles do not need Epsom salt. Extension guidance finds no established composting benefit and recommends testing garden soil before adding magnesium sulfate.

For most home compost piles, no: there is no established reason to add Epsom salt as a routine ingredient. The reviewed university Extension guidance does not show that it improves decomposition, finished compost, or plant growth. If you are concerned about magnesium in your garden soil, test the soil first and use an amendment only if the results or local Extension advice recommend it.

What Epsom salt does—and what it has not been shown to do in compost

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, a soluble source of magnesium and sulfur. University of Maryland Extension describes it as 10% magnesium and 13% sulfur in its guidance on organic matter and soil amendments. Those composition figures describe the product, not a benefit from putting it in a compost pile.

The reviewed Extension sources do not establish that adding Epsom salt to a pile improves decomposition, the quality of finished compost, or plant growth. That absence of compost-specific evidence does not prove that no effect is possible; it means a benefit or recommended compost dose cannot be responsibly claimed from the available guidance.

Why it is not a routine compost ingredient

Compost is made from organic materials such as leaves, grass clippings, and kitchen scraps, which are broken down by microorganisms. Iowa State University Extension’s soils, fertilizing, and composting FAQ identifies Epsom salt as magnesium sulfate and says it should not be used in the garden or landscape. The reviewed guidance does not recommend adding it to compost as a standard mineral ingredient.

More is not automatically better when adding minerals to soil. Maryland Extension cautions that excess magnesium can make calcium less available to plants. Washington State University Extension also warns that unsupported Epsom-salt recipes can create nutrient imbalances and injure plants.

If your concern is magnesium in a garden bed

Do not use compost as a workaround for an unverified soil problem. Washington State University Extension says urban home-garden soils are rarely magnesium deficient; the crops treated in the cited studies were intensively produced and magnesium deficient. In its home-garden guidance, WSU advises professional soil testing and recommends asking for pH and nutrient levels. Its recommendation is direct: “Unless magnesium is deficient, don’t add Epsom salt.”

  1. Test the garden soil. Use a professional laboratory or contact your local Extension office about an appropriate test. If considering an at-home kit, confirm that it measures both magnesium and pH.
  2. Read the full results. Magnesium needs to be considered alongside soil pH and other nutrient levels, not in isolation.
  3. Follow the test recommendation. Apply an amendment only when the report or local Extension guidance calls for it, using the direction provided for your soil and plants.

Do not use Epsom salt to treat blossom end rot

Epsom salt is not a remedy for blossom end rot. Maryland Extension says it will neither prevent nor reverse the condition, and WSU says blossom end rot is not related to magnesium deficiency. Adding magnesium without a diagnosed need may worsen nutrient balance rather than address the underlying problem.
