They are different from the tongue-and-groove profile along a plank’s edges, which joins neighboring boards.
What are the grooves on the underside for?
Underside grooves—also called kerfs—can have several purposes. WOOD Magazine’s September 21, 2018 explanation, attributed to Brett Miller of the National Wood Flooring Association, describes four:
- Relief for splinters during nailing. When a plank is nailed in place, a splinter can break into a kerf rather than hold the plank up from the subfloor. A raised splinter could create a pivot point and contribute to squeaking.
- Less shipping weight in some solid flooring. Some manufacturers cut grooves into the back of solid-wood planks to reduce their weight for shipping. The article reports no weight figure and says this does not negatively affect floor performance.
- Balancing engineered layers. In engineered flooring, back kerfs can form part of the product’s construction, helping balance layers that may shrink and swell to different degrees. The design varies by product.
- An orientation cue. The cuts can help an installer distinguish the underside from the finished face.
These are possible functions, not a claim that every plank has the same grooves or that each groove serves every purpose.
Do underside grooves prevent cupping?
Not generally. Cupping is usually associated with a moisture imbalance: wood gains or loses moisture as relative humidity changes, and it expands or contracts in response. Grooves should not be treated as a substitute for controlling site conditions or following the flooring maker’s moisture and installation requirements.

WOOD Magazine’s explanation says grooves are not generally a cupping remedy for solid-wood flooring that is typically 3–4 inches wide. It says they may help ward off cupping in flooring 5 inches or wider, especially flatsawn planks. Those widths are guidance from that 2018 explanation, not a universal product specification.
How underside kerfs differ from an edge groove
A plank’s edge tongue-and-groove joint is a separate feature. One edge has a projecting tongue; the adjacent plank has a matching groove. The profile aligns and connects neighboring boards. During installation, fasteners may be driven through the tongue so the next plank covers them, and a tapping block may be used against the tongue side to bring boards together.

The gap required at room walls or fixed objects is also separate: it is perimeter expansion space, not a function of underside kerfs. Its size and installation method depend on the flooring product. Provenza’s 2023 consumer guidance warns against striking the groove side and directs installers to follow the product’s instructions.

- Confirm whether a groove is on the underside or is part of the edge joint; they have different jobs.
- Check whether the floor is solid or engineered, since construction affects the possible purpose of back kerfs.
- Follow the manufacturer’s directions for fastening, tapping, moisture conditions, and perimeter expansion space.
- Do not assume that more underside grooves mean greater resistance to cupping. Compare products using their stated construction and installation guidance instead.
