Should You Add Coffee Grounds to Blueberry Bushes?

Used coffee grounds are nearly neutral and will not reliably lower blueberry soil pH. Test first, follow local amendment advice, and compost grounds instead.

No—not to make the soil more acidic. Used coffee grounds are nearly neutral, not a dependable soil acidifier, and applying them around blueberries will not reliably lower pH. Test the soil first, then follow local extension guidance if it needs adjusting. If you want to reuse the grounds, add them to compost instead.

Why coffee grounds are not a reliable blueberry soil amendment

Blueberries need acidic soil, but that does not mean every acidic material—or something associated with acidic coffee—will lower the soil pH when spread in a garden. Penn State Extension reports that freshly ground coffee and brewed coffee are acidic, while spent grounds are nearly neutral, at pH 6.8. The grounds left after brewing therefore should not be treated like fresh coffee or a purpose-made soil amendment.

The University of Minnesota Extension says coffee grounds should not be relied on to adjust blueberry soil pH: even acidic grounds would take a massive amount to change soil pH, and the result would not be reliable. A Maryland Extension expert likewise says grounds will not acidify soil by a measurable amount. Mary Jo R. Gibson, a Penn State Master Gardener, puts the practical point plainly: “Used coffee grounds will not acidify the soil around your blueberries, rhododendrons, and azaleas.”

What soil pH blueberries need

The target range varies slightly between extension sources. Penn State Extension gives an ideal pH of 4.5 to 5.0; the University of Minnesota Extension gives an optimum of 4.0 to 5.0. Follow the recommendation from your local extension service, since soil conditions and amendment advice are regional.

How to decide whether your soil needs an amendment

  1. Test the soil. Use a soil test to find out whether pH needs adjustment rather than guessing from the plant or applying grounds as a precaution. Penn State notes that soil fertility test kits are available through local extension offices. A basic home pH kit can help check pH, but do not assume it provides the same information as a complete soil fertility test.
  2. Use local recommendations to choose a treatment. If the test indicates that pH needs adjustment, ask your local extension service which amendment is appropriate and how to apply it. The cited sources do not establish coffee grounds as an effective alternative to specific acidifiers.
  3. Retest over time. Minnesota Extension advises testing soil pH every year or two and amending as needed. That helps avoid adding material when no change is called for.

When fertilizer may be appropriate

A fertilizer for azaleas, rhododendrons, or other acid-loving plants is not automatically needed by every blueberry bush. Minnesota Extension suggests an organic acid fertilizer when symptoms indicate that pH may be out of range or nitrogen is needed. Use the soil test and local guidance to decide whether fertilizer is called for; do not use coffee grounds as a substitute for diagnosing the problem.

How to reuse spent coffee grounds

Add used grounds to compost if you want to keep them out of the waste stream. Penn State and Maryland Extension support composting them; finished compost can contribute organic matter. That is a useful way to reuse the grounds, but it is not evidence that they directly acidify a blueberry bed.
