Compare countertop, over-the-range and built-in options by dimensions, ventilation and clearance before weighing inverter cooking, sensors or app control. The examples below are manufacturer-listed models, not an independently tested ranking.
Choose the form factor and fit before the features
A microwave can be a countertop appliance, an over-the-range (OTR) unit that also serves as a ventilation hood, or a microwave installed in cabinetry with a compatible trim kit. These are different installation choices, not interchangeable feature tiers.
- Countertop: Check the appliance’s exterior dimensions, door swing, nearby outlet and required clearances. A larger stated capacity does not guarantee that a particular dish will fit; check cavity dimensions too.
- Over-the-range: Confirm the cabinet and cooktop arrangement, mounting and clearance requirements, and whether the ventilation route is ducted or recirculating. Compare the unit’s airflow specification with the installation instructions and the kitchen’s duct setup.
- Built-in appearance: Some countertop models support a specific trim kit. Match the kit to the exact model and cabinet opening; an accessory listed for a similar microwave is not proof of compatibility.
Before ordering, check the current installation guide for the exact model, including dimensions, clearances, electrical connection, ventilation requirements and included accessories. Manufacturers’ product pages offer starting points: Samsung’s US microwave range, LG’s microwave lineup, Sharp’s microwave product information and Panasonic’s countertop microwave listings.
Compare the main microwave features
Inverter cooking controls microwave power
Inverter technology concerns how the microwave delivers power. Panasonic says its inverter maintains consistent power levels rather than pulsing power on and off; LG and Sharp also describe inverter cooking as a precision or even-heating feature. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent proof that every food cooks more evenly in every inverter model. If you often use lower power settings to soften, defrost or cook delicate foods, compare how each model implements power control rather than treating “inverter” as a guarantee of a particular result.

Sensor cooking adjusts a cycle based on conditions
Sensor cooking is separate from inverter power delivery. Depending on the model, a sensor detects conditions such as humidity or temperature and adjusts cooking time or power. LG describes humidity sensing, Samsung says its Sensor Cook feature automatically adjusts cooking time, and Panasonic describes temperature sensing in its 2026 model. The sensing method and available programs vary, so check the specific product’s manual and feature list.
Flatbed designs change the interior layout
Panasonic’s NN-SF57RM is a turntable-free, flatbed example. Panasonic says the design provides more usable capacity and makes cleaning easier. Treat that as a manufacturer claim and check the actual cavity dimensions and cookware fit: “flatbed” does not establish that every large dish will fit or heat as desired.

Wi-Fi is a convenience, not a cooking-performance measure
Connected features differ by model. Samsung lists Wi-Fi and SmartThings functions that require Wi-Fi, a compatible Android or iOS app, and a Samsung account. LG describes ThinQ alerts and selected remote actions. Check which functions are supported on the exact model, what requires an account or phone, and whether those functions suit your household. App connectivity alone says nothing about heating quality.
OTR ventilation depends on the whole installation
For an OTR microwave, compare airflow ratings and duct compatibility as well as cooking features. Samsung announced a DualVent OTR model for the US and Canada beginning in September 2026. The company reports an 82% capture rate from chamber tests at its ICE&KS Pre-Development Lab on February 9, 2026, using a CO2 tracer method and comparing two intakes plus one exhaust against standalone hoods under identical test conditions. Samsung cautions that results can vary with use, installation, duct type, cooking method and environment; the figure is not a guarantee of performance in a particular kitchen.

A practical way to narrow the choice
- Measure the installation space. Record cabinet or counter dimensions, available clearance, door-swing space and outlet location. For an OTR unit, identify the existing duct route and cooktop arrangement.
- Choose the installation type. Decide whether a countertop appliance, an OTR microwave or a cabinet installation is appropriate. For a trim-kit installation, verify the exact microwave, kit and cabinet opening together.
- Check capacity against actual cookware. Compare cavity dimensions and turntable or flatbed layout with the dishes you use, not just the advertised cubic-foot capacity.
- Prioritize the features you will use. Consider inverter power control, sensor programs, connectivity and any additional cooking modes listed for the exact model. Do not assume that one feature implies another.
- For OTR models, verify ventilation. Match the unit’s airflow and duct requirements to the kitchen installation; do not use a company test result as a prediction for your own home.
- Compare ownership details. Confirm current price and availability, included accessories, warranty terms, electrical requirements and installation instructions before purchase.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer pages establish the specifications and features each company lists for its own products. They do not provide controlled, independent side-by-side results establishing which listed microwave heats most evenly, cooks fastest, uses the least energy or lasts longest. Capacity and wattage are useful comparison points, but neither alone establishes real-world cooking performance.

For US regulatory context, the FDA’s microwave oven classification page identifies the consumer microwave oven performance standard, 21 CFR 1030.10; it is not a consumer safety manual or evidence that a particular feature is safer. The Department of Energy standards page says amended microwave energy standards require compliance for products manufactured on or after June 22, 2026, while also recording a proposal to rescind those standards. That page’s stated status should not be read as a settled forecast of future requirements.
