There is no single dishwasher detergent established as best for all sterling silver. Check the care instructions for your specific flatware first. If they do not clearly permit machine washing, the conservative choice is to hand-wash with gentle liquid dish soap, hot water, and a soft sponge or cloth, as Lenox recommends for sterling flatware.
Start with the care instructions for your silver
Sterling silver care varies by maker and item. Some pieces may be dishwasher-safe under specific conditions; others should be hand-washed. Follow the instructions for the particular piece rather than assuming that advice for another brand—or for silver plate—applies to yours. If the instructions are unavailable or unclear, hand-washing avoids the risks of an unapproved detergent or cycle.
There is no head-to-head detergent test here that establishes a best brand or formula. The useful distinction is whether the item’s maker permits machine washing and, if so, what detergent and cycle limits it sets.
For hand-washing, choose a gentle liquid dish soap
For sterling flatware, Lenox advises: “Wash by hand with hot water, a gentle dishwashing liquid, and a soft sponge or cloth.” Wash promptly after use; Lenox notes that eggs, mayonnaise, and vinegar can stain if left on the silver. Avoid abrasive scrubbers that may damage the surface.

- Minimize Rewash With This Formula That Eliminates Film On Flatware
- Solid Presoak Provides Safer, More Controlled Dispensing
Ordinary hand dish soap is for washing by hand, not a substitute for detergent in an automatic dishwasher. For tarnish or luster care on sterling décor and collectibles, Lenox separately suggests occasional non-abrasive liquid or polish. That is not a dishwasher detergent, and dips or solutions may remove intentional decorative oxidation.
If the maker permits dishwasher use, follow its exact conditions
Instructions differ even among makers that allow machine cleaning. For example, Christofle’s guidance for its silverware recommends powder without chlorine or citric acid, advises against gels, liquids, citrus products containing citric acid, and multipurpose tabs, and specifies occasional low-temperature washing up to 50°C. It also says to account for water hardness. These are Christofle-specific directions, not a universal formula for sterling silver.

Tiffany’s silver-care guidance says most silver, except knives, may be placed in a dishwasher for cleaning only; it advises removing permitted pieces before the drying cycle and hand-drying them. It also warns against chlorine and bleach, and describes hand-washing and prompt drying as preferable. Apply that guidance only to items covered by the relevant Tiffany instructions.
SIOM Orfèvres says its own silverware is dishwasher-safe with precautions, recommends mild detergent without bleach, and warns against washing silver with stainless steel. This maker-specific guidance should not be generalized to other pieces.

Prevent residue, metal contact, and food damage
- Keep silver away from stainless steel and copper. GE warns against washing silver with stainless steel or copper in the same load; KitchenAid also advises keeping sterling silver or silver plate from directly contacting stainless flatware. Follow the item’s maker instructions as well. GE’s dishwasher guidance describes sterling silver and silver plate as usually safe with precautions, not unconditionally safe.
- Do not expose silver to dry detergent. GE warns that dry detergent can cause difficult-to-remove black spots. Do not place silver beneath the detergent dispenser where it may be hit by undissolved detergent.
- Do not leave food residue on silver. KitchenAid cautions that prolonged contact with salty, acidic, or sulfide-containing foods can damage the finish. If you cannot wash promptly, rinse the pieces first, as advised in KitchenAid’s loading guidance.
- Handle drying as the maker directs. Tiffany advises removing permitted silver before the drying cycle and hand-drying. Christofle advises opening the door partway and wiping pieces if they remain wet.
Samsung India’s support guidance, updated October 13, 2020, says silverware is usually dishwasher-safe but may discolor; it advises rinsing salt or acidic food, removing pieces promptly, and separating them from stainless steel. It also says silver-plated items often should not be machine-washed. This is older, regional guidance, so check the item’s own instructions rather than applying it to every market or piece. A practical decision checklist
- Identify the piece and its finish. Check whether it is sterling or silver plate and whether it has intentional oxidation or other decorative details.
- Find its maker’s care instructions. If machine washing is not clearly allowed, hand-wash using gentle liquid dish soap, hot water, and a soft sponge or cloth.
- If machine washing is permitted, copy the maker’s limits. Check detergent form and exclusions, temperature, water-hardness guidance, and whether the piece must be removed before drying.
- Load to avoid contact and residue. Keep silver separate from stainless steel and copper, keep it away from dry detergent, and rinse off problematic food residue if washing is delayed.
- Dry promptly as directed. Hand-dry when the maker calls for it; if pieces remain wet, use the maker’s advice for preventing water from lingering.
