Citronella candles may reduce mosquito annoyance in some outdoor settings, but they cannot promise a bug-free patio or dependable protection from bites. The available evidence does not establish a current, tested ranking of retail candles, so the most useful way to choose is to check each product’s EPA record and label for its intended use, directions, and safety precautions.
Are citronella candles effective?
Sometimes, under particular conditions. In a 1995 field study in a woodlot in Guelph, Ontario, University of Guelph-affiliated researchers recorded an average of 6.2 mosquito bites per five minutes at positions with citronella candles, compared with 10.8 at untreated positions. The authors reported an overall reduction of 42.3%. That result describes one experiment, not an expected outcome for every candle, patio, or evening. Read the field-study abstract.
A 2009 study found 14% indoor repellency for the citronella candles it tested, while citronella diffusers produced 68% under the same study conditions. Those indoor results should not be generalized to all candles or used to predict outdoor performance. Read the study abstract.
These findings support a limited conclusion: candles may lessen mosquito annoyance in some circumstances, but results vary with the product, environment, and method. They do not establish a universal level of protection.

What is the best citronella candle for a patio?
There is not enough verified, current product information to name a best-performing retail candle or rank brands. Instead, compare the exact product labels. EPA’s record for Patio Essentials Citronella Candle, Registration No. 90266-1, lists 3% oil of citronella, mosquitoes as the pest, and outdoor sites including patios, campsites, picnic areas, and residential outdoor areas. Its record includes accepted actions through March 28, 2025; that registration record is not a head-to-head test or a recommendation over other products. Check EPA’s product-registration record.

- Intended use and claim: Confirm it is labeled for outdoor mosquito use, and note whether its claim is to reduce annoyance rather than provide personal bite protection.
- Placement and conditions: Look for directions on spacing, wind, covered area, and any setup or buildup time. Do not assume a candle’s size or appearance indicates how much space it covers.
- Format and ingredients: Check the container, wick configuration, and listed ingredients. Treat burn-time or coverage claims as product-specific and rely on the current label, not an assumption based on candle style.
- Safety instructions: Follow the label’s requirements for surfaces, distance from flammable materials, children, pets, and supervision.
EPA describes candles as one kind of spatial repellent, alongside lanterns, torches, table-top diffusers, and coils. These products are for outdoor use unless their label specifically allows indoor use. EPA advises checking label limits for area, wind, and any time needed for the product to build up; registered spatial repellents must have safety and effectiveness data evaluated before sale. How do outdoor conditions affect results?
Wind can disperse a spatial repellent, and a larger area may require following label directions for multiple devices or specific placement. A label accepted by EPA on January 31, 2005, for Insect Repellent Citronella Candle says it “Aids in reducing the annoyance from mosquitoes” and advises, “For best results, use several candles in still air.” Those are the directions and claim for that specific label, not a rule for every candle. Follow the label supplied with the candle you actually buy. If the instructions do not establish a spacing or coverage distance, do not infer one from another brand’s directions.
How should you use a citronella candle safely?
Treat a lit candle as an open flame and follow its product label. For example, the registered OFF! citronella candle label directs users to use it outdoors only, place it on a heat-resistant surface, keep it away from flammable items and out of reach of children and pets, and never leave it unattended. These are that product’s instructions; check the label for whichever candle you choose. Read the EPA-registered label’s safety directions.

Do citronella candles keep mosquitoes away enough to prevent bites?
No candle should be treated as dependable personal protection or as protection against mosquito-borne disease. If your priority is reducing personal bite risk, CDC says: “To protect yourself against germs spread by mosquitoes, CDC and EPA recommend using an EPA-registered insect repellent.” CDC also explains that EPA has evaluated the effectiveness of EPA-registered repellents.
