The right unit must deliver the required hot-water flow at the site’s temperature rise and be compatible with the building’s electrical service. Start by sizing the demand; then compare current product specifications and installation requirements.
What “electric instant hot water heater” means
An electric instantaneous water heater heats water as it flows rather than storing a tank of hot water. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines a consumer electric instantaneous water-heater category with input up to 12 kilowatts; that is a category boundary, not a recommended size for a home. DOE’s consumer water-heater definitions should not be mistaken for a sizing recommendation.
Commercial equipment has a separate classification context. DOE describes commercial instantaneous water heaters using an input rating of at least 4,000 Btu/h per gallon of stored water. That threshold is also a classification—not a measure of what a particular building needs. See DOE’s commercial water-heating equipment definitions.
Do not confuse electric resistance tankless heaters with heat-pump water heaters. ENERGY STAR’s commercial criteria cover commercial gas-fired instantaneous equipment and electric heat-pump water heaters; those criteria do not establish certification of electric resistance tankless units. ENERGY STAR’s commercial water-heater criteria describe the program scope.

How to size an electric tankless heater
Two inputs determine whether a candidate can serve the demand: the temperature rise it must produce and the hot-water flow required at the same time. DOE’s tankless transition guide recommends considering the maximum temperature rise and peak flow demand. It gives 120°F as a desired output temperature for most uses. DOE’s tankless transition guide is general technical guidance, not a current model comparison.
1. Estimate the required temperature rise
Subtract the cold-season incoming-water temperature from the desired hot-water output temperature. For example, if the inlet is 50°F and the intended output is 120°F, the heater must provide a 70°F rise. The inlet figure should reflect the site’s colder-season conditions, not just a warm-weather reading.

- Important Note: Ensure this tankless water heater meets your installation requirements, 150 Amp Household Service Recommended. The WN18 model is rated at 18KW (240V) with a maximum amperage of 75A. It requires 2 x 40 Amp DP breakers and 2 x 8/2 AWG wiring. The unit dimensions are 11.1” (W) x 19.2 ” (H) x 4” (D), the water connection is 3/4" NPT, Please consult a qualified electrician before purchasing
- Stable Water Temperature: Automatically adjusts energy consumption based on incoming water temperature and flow rate to ensure maximum efficiency, continuous stable temperature, and optimal power usage. Its maximum hot water output is 4.3 gallons per minute. It is perfect for residential shower use, eliminating the need to wait for preheating. There’s no longer any concern about running out of hot water in the tank, and you won’t experience temperature fluctuations during your shower. Provides continuous hot water for showers and everyday household use
- Energy Saving: Self-modulating technology automatically adjusts power consumption based on real-time water flow and the set temperature. When the water flow decreases, the system reduces power to save energy; when not in use, it consumes no electricity, achieving up to 99% energy savings. Compared to traditional tank water heaters, it is more energy-efficient. Ideal for 2–3 bathroom homes in mild to moderate climate conditions
- Space Saving: The WN18 Compact wall-mounted design that frees up storage space, occupying 90% less space compared to traditional tank water heaters. It is suitable for tight areas and can be easily installed anywhere. It provides an endless supply of hot water in a short time without the need to wait for preheating. Equipped with remote WiFi control, you can adjust the temperature without being near the water heater

The product features multiple safety protections, including leakage protection, overheat protection, and dry-fire protection, and is ETL certified to fully ensure your safety, allowing you to enjoy hot water anytime, anywhere with peace of mind. We also provide a Backed by a 2-year limited manufacturer warranty and long-term technical support. along with long-term professional technical support to give you worry-free use
2. Add up simultaneous hot-water flow
List the fixtures and appliances that may draw hot water at the same time, then total their expected demand. The relevant figure is not the number of fixtures in the building but the peak combination the heater is expected to serve. A unit that can supply a shower alone may not maintain the desired output when another shower or appliance runs concurrently.
3. Match flow at the required rise
Compare a candidate’s published flow performance at the site’s required temperature rise. A maximum gallons-per-minute (GPM) figure without its temperature-rise and test conditions can be misleading. ENERGY STAR defines GPM for instantaneous units in relation to the hot water supplied while maintaining a nominal temperature rise at steady-state operation. Its 67°F rise figure applies to criteria for gas-fired products, not as a benchmark for electric tankless heaters. ENERGY STAR’s water-heater criteria explain that rating context.

- Wiring Requirements (RTEX‑11): Requires 240V single‑phase power, one- 50‑amp double‑pole breaker, one set of #8 AWG copper conductors with ground, and a recommended minimum 100‑amp household electrical service panel for proper operation
- Digital thermostatic temperature controls in 1-degree increments ranging from 80°F - 140°F (26°C - 60°C)
Will an electric tankless heater run a whole house?
It depends on the home’s peak simultaneous demand, cold-season inlet temperature, target output temperature, and electrical capacity. A whole-home unit has to meet the combined flow requirement at the required rise; a headline GPM maximum alone does not show whether it will do so.
For a single distant or occasional draw, a point-of-use heater may be worth evaluating instead of trying to serve the whole home with one unit. The choice depends on how localized the demand is and how often it occurs. No current model-specific specifications in the cited sources establish a particular household capacity or rank residential products.

Are electric tankless heaters suitable for commercial buildings?
They can be considered for some commercial uses, but commercial hot-water demand varies widely. A localized, occasional draw is a different design problem from simultaneous demand across multiple fixtures or processes. ENERGY STAR’s historical competitive assessment described point-of-use electric tankless equipment as a possible fit for occasional commercial demand and very large systems as economically feasible only for specialized industrial processes. That is historical application context, not current pricing or evidence that a particular product fits a project. ENERGY STAR’s electric tankless competitive assessment is from approximately 2007.
Commercial sizing should use a building-specific load profile rather than household rules of thumb. DOE’s commercial equipment material notes that engineering sizing methods account for short-duration peak loads. A professional designer can assess the demand pattern and specify equipment accordingly.

Check electrical and installation requirements before choosing
Confirm the candidate’s current installation manual and rating plate against the building’s electrical service and installation conditions. The general sizing guidance does not establish a universal panel or breaker requirement, and a whole-home electric tankless heater should not be assumed to be a simple drop-in replacement.
- Verify the unit’s electrical input and current requirements against the available service.
- Confirm installation clearances, location, and plumbing connections using the current product documentation.
- Have a qualified electrician and plumbing or mechanical professional confirm the site-specific design before purchase or installation.
How to compare products when you have a load estimate
Compare like with like, using the same required temperature rise and peak-flow assumptions for each candidate. Check current documentation rather than relying on an unqualified maximum-flow claim.
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Flow at required temperature rise | Published delivery at the site’s required rise, not just maximum GPM. |
| Electrical compatibility | Input, current, and installation requirements in the current manual and on the rating plate. |
| Application | Whether the unit is intended for a localized point-of-use draw or the planned whole-home or commercial load. |
| Demand pattern | Number of fixtures and appliances expected to draw hot water concurrently. |
| Physical and commercial terms | Dimensions and installation constraints, plus verified warranty, certifications, price, and availability. |
The cited sources do not provide current model-by-model values for these comparisons. Without verified specifications and a site load estimate, naming a “best” product would not establish that it can serve the building safely or reliably.
