Impact wrench or impact driver: which tool do you need?
A cordless impact wrench has a square drive that accepts sockets for nuts and bolts. A 1/4-inch hex impact driver holds driver bits and is a different tool category. DEWALT lists its impact wrenches and impact drivers separately, including the impact-wrench product range and the DCF860BLR impact-driver listing.
Compare these cordless impact wrench examples
These are manufacturer-listed examples, not tested winners. Torque labels differ: fastening or tightening torque describes a fastening rating, while breakaway, nut-busting, or breakaway torque describes a different stated measure. The figures do not establish which tool will perform best on a particular job.

Specifications and package details are stated by the manufacturers: DEWALT DCF901B, DEWALT DCF961B, DEWALT DCF964B, and Milwaukee 2867-20. The manufacturer pages do not provide a common test method here, so compare each model’s figures within their own stated labels rather than treating the table as a controlled performance test.

How to choose a cordless impact wrench
Match the tool to the work
Start with the fasteners and tasks you handle, then select a tool category and capacity appropriate to them. Compact, mid-torque, and high-torque models serve different needs; DEWALT’s product range includes options beyond the high-torque examples above. The available manufacturer ratings do not establish a universal torque threshold for particular jobs, so do not infer that a maximum rating alone guarantees suitability.
Choose a drive size that fits your sockets and access
The examples span 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch, and 1-inch square drives. Consider the socket system you already use and the clearances around the work. A larger drive is not automatically the right choice for every job; select the drive and socket setup that suit the fasteners and access conditions.

Check battery-platform compatibility
If you already own cordless tools, compatibility can affect the practical cost and convenience of a new wrench. DEWALT identifies its cited bare-tool models as part of the 20V MAX system, while Milwaukee says the M18 FUEL 2867-20 is compatible with M18 battery packs. The cited specifications do not establish a cross-brand runtime comparison.
Confirm whether the listing is a kit or bare tool
Some listings exclude batteries and chargers. The DEWALT DCF961B and DCF901B pages say both are sold separately; the DCF964B page says the battery is sold separately. Check the exact SKU’s package contents and account for any compatible battery and charger you need before comparing purchase options.

Consider controls and tool size
Manufacturer pages describe model-specific controls, modes, and compact dimensions. Use those details to narrow choices if access or fastening control matters, but treat them as manufacturer descriptions rather than independent usability findings. Confirm that the specific model and package you are considering include the features you need.

What the torque figures can—and cannot—tell you
- Read the label. Fastening or tightening torque and breakaway or nut-busting torque are distinct manufacturer-stated measures; do not compare them as though they were interchangeable.
- Keep the maker attached to the number. The values in the table are published by DEWALT or Milwaukee, not independent test measurements.
- Use ratings as one selection input. Drive size, battery platform, package contents, access, and model-specific controls also matter.
