Dyson’s wet floor cleaners are not steam cleaners: the WashG1 and V15s Detect Submarine use water and rollers, not steam. Choose the V15s if you want one cordless machine for dry vacuuming and wet-cleaning hard floors with a head change; choose the WashG1 if you want a dedicated hard-floor washer and have a separate vacuum. Neither choice replaces a carpet-cleaning machine.
First, choose the right kind of cleaner
The word “steamer” can be misleading here. Dyson describes the WashG1 as cleaning through hydration, absorption and extraction, while the V15s Detect Submarine uses a wet roller head. The cited product information does not describe either as using steam or sanitizing with steam. Dyson’s WashG1 announcement calls it a wet floor cleaner.
The practical decision is whether the wet cleaner should also vacuum dry debris and carpet. The V15s is a cordless dry vacuum with a separate wet-cleaning head for hard floors. The WashG1 is dedicated to washing hard floors; pair it with a vacuum if you need to clean carpets or want dry vacuuming.

When the V15s Detect Submarine makes sense
Choose the V15s format if you want one machine for routine dry vacuuming and occasional hard-floor washing, and are comfortable changing heads. Dyson’s launch announcement says the Submarine head diverts power from the vacuum motor, so there is no vacuum suction during wet cleaning. The head distributes water and collects contaminated water in a separate tray. It is a wet roller, not a steam attachment.

Dyson’s 2023 launch announcement lists eight water jets releasing 18 mL per minute and clean-water tank coverage of up to 1,184 sq. ft. These are Dyson-published design and coverage figures, not independent test results. The same announcement gave a US launch price of $949; that is historical launch pricing, not a current price. Current stock and pricing should be checked on the relevant country’s product page.
When the WashG1 makes sense
The WashG1 is the more direct fit if your priority is washing hard floors and you already own a vacuum, or do not need the wet cleaner to handle carpet. Dyson announced it in 2024 as its first dedicated wet floor cleaner and describes counter-rotating microfiber rollers and technology that separates wet and dry debris at the source. Dyson’s stated tank capacity and coverage appear in the comparison table above.
Rank #2
- CLEANS WET & DRY MESSES HYGIENICALLY - Washes spills and stains on hard floor. Waste stays in the cleaner head, not the machine, so no contamination or bad smells. Unlike your mop, cleans both dry debris and wet dirt with only clean water.
- LIFTS DUST AND DEBRIS LIKE A VACUUM² - Our powerful motor drives a roller with densely packed filaments that grab and lift dry debris and hair from hard floors, even when wet. The Anti-tangle comb behind the roller helps avoid hair tangling.
- POWERFUL WET CLEAN WITH A FAST DRY AND STREAK-FREE FINISH - Our most absorbent microfiber roller prevents water stains and streaking with 84,000 densely-packed filaments. Leaves less than 1g/m² of water, so floors dry within 60 seconds.
- UP TO 70 MINUTES RUN TIME¹ - Dyson's longest run time allows for up to 3,770 sqft of coverage.⁴
- CONTINUOUS HYGIENIC CLEANING - A new hygienic waste system means no dirt is drawn upwards through the machine. Unlike a mop, dirty water and debris are scraped from the roller before it’s hydrated with clean water, so it always washes with clean water.
TechRadar’s 2026 comparison also treats the WashG1 and Clean+Wash Hygiene as dedicated hard-floor cleaners without suction. Its comments on which design it prefers are that reviewer’s judgment, not a universal performance result.
Do you need to vacuum before wet cleaning?
It depends on the model. Dyson’s US FAQ says to vacuum hard floors with the V15s Digital Motorbar head before switching to the Submarine wet roller. For the WashG1 and Clean+Wash Hygiene, Dyson says prior vacuuming is not required on hard floors. See Dyson’s US floor-cleaners page and FAQ. This guidance is specific to the models and market described by that page.

- Dyson deep cleaning power now washes hard floors. All in one machine.
- Advanced Dyson vacuum technology provides 100% more power¹ and up to 60 minutes of run time.²
- Fluffy Optic cleaner head reveals 2x more hidden dust on hard floors.³ Digital Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types and de-tangles hair. Submarine cleaner head washes hard floors and removes the wet and dry debris simultaneously
- The Submarine cleaner head’s motorized wet roller picks up liquids, debris and tough stains, which are continuously extracted from the roller with each rotation. Washes with clean water from start to finish.
- Compatible with gentle, common floor detergents when used in accordance with usage guidance.⁵
Choose by your floors and routine
- Mostly carpet, with some hard floor: The V15s can dry-vacuum with its vacuum head and wet-clean hard flooring with the separate Submarine head. The cited wet-cleaner information does not establish carpet washing by the wet heads.
- Mostly hard floors, with a vacuum already in the home: Consider the dedicated WashG1 or Clean+Wash Hygiene format. The WashG1 is positioned by Dyson for hard-floor washing, not carpet cleaning.
- You want one appliance but do not want to change heads: The V15s requires a head change between dry vacuuming and wet cleaning. The dedicated cleaners do not provide the dry-vacuum function described for the V15s.
- You are comparing newer models: Check the local Dyson product pages for exact configuration, runtime, tank details, warranty, price and stock; product availability varies by market and changes over time.
Check availability before buying
The comparisons and availability details here are primarily based on Dyson’s US pages. On October 8, 2026, Dyson’s US V15s page displayed an out-of-stock notice; that does not establish availability in other countries or at a later date. Prices, model names and configurations may vary by market, so confirm them on the official regional listing before purchase. Dyson’s quoted coverage figures are manufacturer claims, not independent testing.
