How to choose a keychain multi-tool
Start with the tasks you expect to handle: tightening a loose screw, opening a bottle, or making a small adjustment. A compact tool has limited leverage and reach, so it is best treated as a backup for light, occasional jobs—not as a substitute for pliers, a full-size screwdriver, or a dedicated knife.

- Balance function against simplicity. More features can add options, but they do not necessarily make a tool more useful to you.
- Check attachment and dimensions. Confirm how the exact model connects to your key ring or strap, and verify its length and weight against the manufacturer’s listing for that variant before buying.
- Consider cutting edges. A box cutter or serrated edge may affect carry rules, especially for air travel.

Can you take a keychain multi-tool through airport security?
For U.S. carry-on screening, the TSA’s official item list says multi-tools without blades are allowed. It says multi-tools with knives of any length are prohibited in carry-on bags, and tools longer than seven inches are prohibited. TSA also notes that an otherwise permitted item may receive additional screening or be disallowed; “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.” See the TSA item list.

Do not assume a product marketed as “TSA Friendly,” “airline safe,” or “airport friendly” will pass. A box cutter or serrated edge means you should not automatically classify a design as blade-free. If a tool’s features make carry-on eligibility uncertain, check with TSA about that exact item and pack it in checked baggage if needed. This guidance is for U.S. screening and should not be generalized to other countries, airlines, or security systems.
