The practical difference depends on the product—especially its clay body, firing, vitrification, and measured water absorption. For construction tile, compare the applicable standard and test data rather than relying on a product label alone.
How ceramic, porcelain, and stoneware relate
Ceramic describes a broad family of inorganic materials hardened through processes such as firing. Porcelain and stoneware are categories within that family, not separate materials outside it. The labels are not used identically in every setting: tile standards, tariff classifications, pottery traditions, and consumer product descriptions may draw distinctions differently.
That context matters when comparing a floor tile with a dinner plate. A classification or absorption threshold for one product type should not automatically be applied to another.
What distinguishes porcelain from stoneware?
Porcelain
In Canadian tariff guidance, porcelain or china ware is described as vitreous and generally made with kaolin, quartz, and feldspar. That guidance defines its water absorption as no more than 0.5%. This is a description for that classification context, not a universal definition for every product called porcelain. Canada Border Services Agency guidance

Stoneware
The same Canadian guidance describes stoneware as potentially vitreous or semi-vitreous. It is often naturally colored and may be made from fireclay or combinations of clays, fluxes, and silica. The description does not establish that every item sold as stoneware has the same porosity, composition, or performance.
Why firing matters
Firing affects properties including mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, water and chemical resistance, and fire resistance. The appropriate firing curve depends on the body composition and, for glazed products, the glaze characteristics. A name such as “porcelain” or “stoneware” therefore cannot replace the maker’s technical data. European Commission Joint Research Centre technical reference

For tile, compare test results and standards
Construction tile is best compared using the relevant tile classification and test information. ISO 13006:2018 covers definitions, classification, characteristics, and marking for ceramic tiles made by normal extrusion or dry-pressing. ISO says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. The standard’s scope is tile; it is not a general definition for all ceramic wares. ISO 13006:2018
For water absorption and porosity, ISO 10545-3:2018 specifies measurement methods for ceramic tiles, including water absorption, apparent porosity, apparent relative density, and bulk density. ISO says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2023 and remains current. ISO 10545-3:2018

A GB/T 4100-2015 preview lists a maximum water absorption of 0.5% for porcelain tile. That is a tile-specific threshold under that standard; it is not a general performance guarantee for all products called porcelain, nor should it be transferred to pottery or dinnerware. GB/T 4100-2015 preview

How to compare products for a building project
- Identify the product context. Confirm whether the item is tile, sanitaryware, or another ceramic product. A term used in one category may not mean the same thing in another.
- Check the applicable classification. For tile, look for the standard and classification stated in the technical documentation, rather than inferring the category from a sales description.
- Compare measured absorption. Prefer a stated water-absorption result or applicable test classification to a general claim about porosity. Check which method or standard the result follows.
- Review the body and finish. Look at body composition, color, glaze, and any stated information about vitrification or translucency. These details help explain how the product is made but do not substitute for test results.
- Match the specification to the installation. Confirm the intended location and expected exposure against the manufacturer’s technical documentation. Material name alone does not establish suitability for a particular installation.
What the labels can—and cannot—tell you
- Ceramic is the umbrella term; porcelain and stoneware are ceramic categories.
- Porcelain commonly signals a particular body and degree of vitrification, but the precise meaning depends on product context and classification.
- Stoneware commonly describes a fired-clay body that may be vitreous or semi-vitreous; the label alone does not give a measured absorption value.
- For construction tile, standards and product-specific test data provide a firmer basis for comparison than a bare material name.
