The Essential Guide to BPA-Free Water Bottles: What the Label Means

A BPA-free label addresses BPA, not every chemical or health outcome. Learn how to read resin codes, compare bottle materials, and check a product’s body, lining, and components.

A “BPA-free” label means the bottle is not made with bisphenol A (BPA); it does not certify the bottle as free of every chemical or prove that one material is healthiest for everyone. If you want to reduce BPA exposure, check the bottle body and any interior lining, then verify the materials of the lid, straw, seal, and mouthpiece in the manufacturer’s current specifications. Resin code 7 is a clue that a plastic container may contain BPA, not a definitive test.

What is BPA?

Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a specific chemical—not a general term for plastic. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastic found in some beverage containers and epoxy resins used in many food and beverage can liners. Small amounts can migrate from packaging into food or drinks. FDA’s BPA overview says its ongoing review supports the safety of currently approved food-contact uses at current exposure levels.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) says diet is the main source of BPA exposure for most people. It also notes that migration from polycarbonate bottles may depend more on the temperature of the liquid or bottle than on the container’s age. NIEHS’s BPA guidance recommends avoiding microwaving polycarbonate food containers because repeated high-temperature use can degrade them.

Is BPA-free really safer?

“BPA-free” answers a limited question: whether the product is made with BPA. It is not a certification that the bottle contains no other chemicals, nor does it establish a general health ranking among materials. FDA’s stated view is that currently approved BPA food-contact uses are safe at current exposure levels; choosing a bottle without BPA can still be a personal exposure-reduction preference.

FDA’s 2012 and 2013 removals of authorization for BPA uses in baby bottles, sippy cups, and infant-formula packaging followed petitions showing those uses had been abandoned. FDA says those amendments were not based on a safety determination. The FDA explanation distinguishes those changes from its safety assessment of currently approved uses.

Microplastics are a separate question from BPA. FDA says current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that the levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods or water pose a human-health risk. The agency also describes important evidence and measurement gaps, including nonstandard definitions and methods, and says there is not sufficient evidence to show that plastic food packaging is a source of migration into food and beverages. FDA reports that EPA has not set regulatory levels for microplastics or nanoplastics in drinking water. A BPA-free label therefore should not be read as a claim about microplastics or every other potential exposure.

How can I tell if a water bottle has BPA?

Start with the material listed for the bottle body and any inner lining. Polycarbonate is a known BPA use in some beverage containers, but not every plastic bottle contains BPA. Then check the current manufacturer specification for components that may use different materials, such as the cap, gasket, straw, or mouthpiece.

Plastic resin codes are identification clues, not chemical tests. FDA says a container marked with resin code 7 “may be made of a BPA-containing plastic.” NIEHS adds that some, but not all, plastics marked 3 or 7 may be made with BPA. A code alone does not establish whether a particular bottle contains BPA.

Which reusable bottle material should I choose?

There is no universal “safest” material established by the available evidence. NIEHS suggests considering glass, porcelain, or stainless steel, particularly for hot food or liquids. The practical choice also depends on how you use, carry, clean, and care for the bottle.

Material or construction What the evidence says What to keep in mind
Polycarbonate plastic FDA identifies polycarbonate as a material used in some beverage containers that can contain BPA. A 2011 study found BPA migration from the polycarbonate bottles it tested. 2011 bottle-migration study These findings do not mean every plastic bottle contains BPA. A resin code is not a chemical test.
Stainless steel NIEHS lists stainless steel as an option, especially for hot liquids. The 2011 study detected no BPA in water stored in the uncoated stainless-steel bottles it tested. 2011 bottle-migration study The study assessed BPA migration, not all chemicals, manufacturing quality, or every metal bottle. Check the lid and other components separately.
Glass NIEHS lists glass as an option, particularly for hot food or liquids. The cited guidance does not compare bottle-specific breakage protection, weight, or current products.
Tritan copolyester The 2011 study detected no BPA in water stored in the Tritan bottles it tested. 2011 bottle-migration study That result does not establish that all copolyesters or current bottles are identical, or prove overall chemical safety.
Aluminum with an interior liner In the 2011 study, no BPA was detected in water from the tested EcoCare-lined bottle. BPA migrated from the tested epoxy-lined bottles; boiling water increased migration from those bottles. 2011 bottle-migration study The liner and use conditions matter; “aluminum” alone is not enough to determine BPA migration. This study is not a current brand endorsement.

The 2011 results apply only to the bottles and test conditions studied. They do not establish how every brand, formulation, or current product performs.

What should I check before buying or using a bottle?

  • Body and lining: Identify the body material and, for lined bottles, the lining material. Treat resin code 7 as a “may contain” clue rather than proof.
  • Separate components: Look up the cap, gasket, straw, and mouthpiece; their materials may differ from the bottle body.
  • Care instructions: Follow the manufacturer’s directions for cleaning, hot liquids, dishwasher use, and replacement parts. Do not assume a bottle is safe for a particular temperature or cleaning method without product-specific guidance.
  • Everyday fit: Compare capacity and empty weight, insulation needs, opening and cleaning access, breakage or dent resistance, and replacement-part availability. The cited evidence does not rank products on these practical features.

What does the BPA exposure statistic mean?

NIEHS reports that 93% of 2,517 urine samples from people aged six and older had detectable BPA in the 2003–2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). This is a historical biomonitoring finding: it does not estimate current prevalence, show that water bottles caused the exposure, or establish a health effect. NIEHS provides the statistic and context.
