For building decisions, first identify the question—such as soil bearing capacity, compaction, drainage, or contamination—and use a qualified geotechnical professional or laboratory to specify the right investigation. A soil test only answers the questions covered by its methods and samples.
What does soil testing tell you?
“Soil testing” can mean very different things. A routine fertility test typically measures soil pH and selected plant-available nutrients; depending on the lab, a report may also include organic matter and recommendations for lime or fertilizer. For example, Penn State Extension describes a panel that can include phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfur, manganese, copper, and zinc. That is one program’s panel, not a universal standard. Penn State Extension explains its soil-testing service.
Soil-health testing is broader: it examines biological, physical, and chemical properties used as indicators of how soil functions. A construction-related investigation asks different questions and may require a geotechnical assessment of the soil and site. Do not treat a fertility report as evidence that soil can safely support a foundation, slab, retaining wall, or driveway.
Why test soil before a construction project?
Match the investigation to the work
The useful benefit is getting relevant information before making a site decision. A test selected for a garden can guide nutrient management; it cannot, by itself, establish construction suitability. Tell the geotechnical professional what you plan to build and ask what investigation is appropriate for the site and design.

Understand site conditions rather than assume them
Soil varies across a property, and a result describes the submitted sample and the measurements performed. A single sample or narrow test panel cannot automatically characterize every location or soil function. Ask how samples should be located and collected, and whether additional investigation is needed for the planned work.
Check for contamination when that is the concern
Routine fertility testing should not be assumed to include lead or other contaminants. If prior land use or another site concern raises a contamination question, request a suitable contaminant analysis specifically. Maine Extension describes lead measurements for home garden and lawn samples through its state service; availability and scope are local, not a nationwide guarantee. Maine Extension’s soil-testing guidance explains its service.

How is construction testing different from garden soil testing?
| Test purpose | Question it addresses | What it does not establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| Routine fertility testing | Soil pH and selected plant-available nutrients; some labs provide planting-specific lime or fertilizer recommendations. | Whether soil is suitable to support a structure or whether contaminants are absent. |
| Soil-health testing | Biological, physical, and chemical indicators related to soil functions and management goals. | A complete evaluation of construction performance or every soil function. |
| Construction-related geotechnical investigation | Site and soil information selected for the proposed construction question and design. | Anything not covered by the agreed investigation, samples, and methods. |
| Contaminant analysis | Specified substances, such as lead, using an appropriate test. | Construction suitability or contaminants not included in the analysis. |
The scope and methods of any construction investigation depend on the site and project; the sources cited here do not prescribe a universal construction test panel or sampling protocol. Ask the professional responsible for the project to define the required work.
How to choose and use a soil test
- Define the decision. State whether you need construction-related site information, fertility guidance, soil-health indicators, or contaminant screening.
- Use the right specialist. For a building project, contact a qualified geotechnical professional and share the proposed structure and site context. For a garden or lawn, contact your local Extension program or a laboratory recommended for your region.
- Follow the provider’s sampling instructions. Sampling requirements vary by test and site. USDA NRCS provides soil-health sampling guidance and a tool for planning sample locations; do not assume its protocol applies to every construction investigation. NRCS soil-health testing guidance.
- Confirm what is measured and how results are interpreted. Ask the lab or professional which properties and methods are included, what the findings can support, and whether interpretation accounts for the site and intended use.
- Act only on recommendations within the test’s scope. A fertility report can guide plant-specific lime or fertilizer decisions; it should not be used as a substitute for construction advice.
Are home soil test kits accurate enough?
A home kit may be useful as a preliminary pH screen, but it is not a substitute for detailed nutrient problem-solving or a construction-related investigation. Oregon State Extension does not recommend kits and devices for diagnosing soil nutrient levels in detail. Penn State notes that standard kits exist, but the existence of a kit does not mean it provides a calibrated, complete laboratory analysis. Oregon State Extension’s soil-testing guidance discusses these limitations.

What to ask before relying on a report
- What specific question was this test designed to answer?
- Which samples and properties were included, and which were not?
- Does the interpretation apply to the intended use and location?
- Are the recommendations within the scope of this test, or is a separate evaluation needed?
