It is NEOM’s planned 170-kilometer (105-mile) linear city in northwestern Saudi Arabia, and reports through July 2026 describe a project under reassessment, with construction reported suspended and only a small fraction of the planned route represented by completed foundation work. That gap between the original vision and reported progress is why the project’s feasibility is in question—not proof that it has been permanently cancelled.
What is The Line in Saudi Arabia?
The Line is one part of NEOM, a development project in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The original concept described a city extending 170 kilometers (105 miles) in a straight line. The 105-mile figure is its planned length, not the height of a single building.
Engineering News-Record’s 2026 summary of the original concept described a structure 500 meters high and 200 meters wide, designed for about nine million people and an internal rail system. These are proposed dimensions and capacity, not a description of what has been built.
Is the 105-mile project being built?
There are three different things to distinguish: the ambitious concept, the work reported on the ground, and possible future plans. They do not amount to a confirmed, continuous 170-kilometer construction project.

Why has feasibility become a question?
The scale is extraordinary
A city planned to run for 170 kilometers, with the original concept’s height, width, population target and internal rail system, is a very different undertaking from building a single tower. Its execution would require coordinating a vast linear development and its infrastructure. The concept’s dimensions explain the scale of the challenge; they do not, by themselves, demonstrate that every part is impossible.

Feasibility was formally under review
Bloomberg reported on July 14, 2025, that a unit of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund was seeking consultants to assess “whether current plans for The Line are feasible” and recommend possible changes. A request for that review is evidence of scrutiny of the plans, not a published finding that the entire project cannot be built.
The projected cost was described as exceptionally high
Reuters reported in November 2024 that a consultant expected The Line alone to cost more than $1 trillion. That was an estimate attributed to the consultant, not an official final budget or an independently audited total. The sources cited here do not establish a final project cost.

Reported progress and the original ambition diverged
The reported suspension and limited foundation progress are difficult to reconcile with treating the original full-length concept as a project proceeding unchanged. They support describing the project as facing a major delivery challenge. They do not identify one definitive cause for the suspension or prove that every component is unworkable.

The available reporting does not establish a permanent cancellation. In July 2026, after changes to how NEOM described the project on its online platforms drew attention, EnterpriseAM quoted a NEOM spokesperson saying: “We routinely update our digital platforms to enhance user experience, and this should not be interpreted as signaling any change to our long-term vision or commitment to our developments.” That is NEOM’s stated position; it does not independently confirm that the original design, schedule or funding remains unchanged.

As of that report, the future scope remained unresolved: reported possibilities included a redesign and different infrastructure uses, but no approved replacement plan was established in the cited coverage. A long-term commitment and a reported construction suspension can both be true; neither alone settles what will ultimately be delivered.

- The 105-mile figure describes the original planned length of The Line; it is not the height of a skyscraper.
