What cabinet refacing changes—and what it keeps
Refacing updates the visible exterior of existing cabinets. Depending on the project, that can mean applying veneer or another overlay to exposed surfaces, replacing doors and drawer fronts, and adding new hardware. The cabinet boxes and overall layout remain in place. The Home Depot describes its service scope and suitability considerations on its cabinet-refacing service page.
That distinction is central to deciding whether refacing fits: it changes the finish and often the fronts, not the underlying cabinet arrangement.
Check the cabinets before choosing a finish
Inspect the boxes and face frames before buying materials or requesting a refacing quote. Look for water damage, warping, loose or failing finish, and other structural problems. Refacing relies on the existing structure, so damaged boxes are not made sound by covering their surfaces.

- There is structural damage: Address the condition of the cabinets rather than treating an overlay as a repair.
- You need a different footprint or major layout changes: Refacing retains the existing arrangement, so consider a different renovation approach.

Choose an overlay that suits the cabinet surface
Wood veneer and laminate are among the options described in The Home Depot’s DIY guide. It also describes Thermofoil as fiberboard fused with a vinyl-like material. These are different materials and constructions; do not assume that one adhesive or application method works on every cabinet surface.

Self-adhesive wood veneer sheets are one option for a refacing project. FormWood describes its pressure-sensitive adhesive veneer for cabinet refacing, while WiseWood’s instructions describe pressure-sensitive sheet veneer paired with hot-melt adhesive edge banding in a kit. Follow the instructions for the particular product and confirm that its dimensions, finish, adhesive, and substrate requirements suit your cabinets: FormWood cabinet-refacing veneer and WiseWood refacing instructions.
For a DIY project, the Home Depot guide also lists task supplies such as a utility knife, straightedge, sandpaper, tack cloth, and finishing materials. The right preparation and finishing steps depend on the overlay and the existing surface.

Typical DIY refacing sequence
Use the chosen material maker’s directions for surface preparation, adhesive, application, and finishing. The Home Depot’s guide outlines a DIY sequence that includes plywood panels, cutting and applying veneer, and finishing.
- Remove doors, drawer fronts, and hardware. Keep track of hardware and which front belongs where if you plan to reuse any pieces.
- Clean and degrease the exposed surfaces. Remove residue that could interfere with preparation or adhesion.
- Prepare the surfaces as specified. Sand or otherwise prepare them according to the selected product’s instructions; do not assume every surface needs the same treatment.
- Apply the overlay. Measure and cut carefully, then install the veneer, laminate, or other chosen material using its specified method.
- Finish or replace the fronts. Complete any finishing the material requires and fit replacement doors or drawer fronts if they are part of the project.
- Install hardware and reassemble. Attach the selected hinges, pulls, or other hardware, then reinstall the fronts.

The Home Depot’s cabinet-refacing service page, accessed in 2026, reports a typical estimate of $8,100–$16,200 for an average-sized kitchen. Compare refacing with other renovation options
Before deciding, compare the condition of the existing boxes, whether the layout needs to change, what components are included, the materials and finish, and the quoted cost. A professional service may include custom-measured replacement doors and drawer fronts, hinges, hardware, and veneer, but inclusions vary by provider; confirm them in the quote.
