The $3.5 million redevelopment of Len Shearer Reserve’s clubrooms and changerooms in Booragoon was complete by 2 September 2025. It delivered four shared-use change rooms and expanded facilities for local soccer and little athletics clubs. The project was designed to support women’s participation, but the official announcements do not provide participation figures or measure whether the upgrade increased it.
What changed at Len Shearer Reserve?
The completed work replaced and expanded the reserve’s clubroom and changeroom facilities. The Western Australian Government said the building now has four change rooms—twice the previous number—and that each can be used by male or female teams. The design makes the rooms shared-use rather than assigning them to one gender.
- Four change rooms with lockable individual showers, toilet cubicles and non-slip flooring.
- A larger clubroom with an extended footprint.
- More storage and a modern umpires’ room.
- A new canteen.
- A universal access toilet, identified by the City of Melville.
The site is Len Shearer Reserve, 521 Marmion Street, Booragoon WA 6154. The City lists soccer and little athletics among the reserve’s sporting uses. (City of Melville reserve information; WA Government project announcement)
When did the new facilities open?
The City of Melville reported on 2 September 2025 that construction was complete. In a March 2026 update, it said Melville Athletics Club and Murdoch University Melville Football Club had been using the facility since it opened in late 2025. The City held a community open day on Sunday, 15 March 2026. (City completion announcement; City open-day update)

How much did the redevelopment cost, and who contributed?
The City and the WA Government each described the redevelopment as a $3.5 million project. Their accounts describe the funding differently, so the figures below should be read with their stated recipients and meanings rather than combined into a single, definitive grant breakdown.
| Source | Funding described |
|---|---|
| City of Melville, 2 September 2025 | The City described a combined $1.4 million State Government contribution: $1.2 million through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) and $200,000 in Legacy Grants for Women’s National Premier Clubs. (City announcement) |
| WA Government, 1 September 2025 | The State said the City contributed $2.1 million and the project received $1.2 million through CSRFF. It also said Murdoch University Melville Football Club (MUMFC) contributed through the $300,000 Women’s World Cup Legacy Grants award the club received; the announcement does not state how much of that award was contributed to this project. (WA Government announcement) |
The two descriptions are not identical: the City reports $200,000 in Legacy Grants funding as part of the State contribution it received for the project, while the State describes a $300,000 award to MUMFC and says the club contributed from it. The published accounts do not establish that the full award was spent on the redevelopment.

How were the facilities intended to support women’s sport?
The stated aim was to provide inclusive, multipurpose amenities that could accommodate teams of different genders and support female participation. In its September 2025 announcement, the City said the investment responded to demand for non-gender-specific facilities. The WA Government said MUMFC and the local athletics club had experienced growth in female participation and expected the new facilities to support that momentum.
Those statements describe the rationale and expected benefit, not a measured result. The announcements do not include participation counts, a time series, or a post-opening evaluation showing that the redevelopment caused participation to rise.

Is there later work at the reserve?
A sports floodlighting procurement was listed separately from the completed clubroom and changeroom redevelopment. The City’s tenders page and TenderLink listed it with a closing date of 15 October 2026; procurement status can change. It should not be treated as part of the $3.5 million project.
