If your Samsung refrigerator is not making enough ice, first check that the freezer is at 0°F or colder, the ice maker is switched on, and its bucket is correctly seated. Then follow the branch that matches the problem: no ice, too little ice, poor-quality ice, or ice that will not dispense. Samsung ice-maker layouts and controls vary by model, so use the exact refrigerator manual for bucket removal and control-panel instructions.
First identify what is going wrong
Look in the ice bucket before changing settings or resetting anything. An empty bucket points to an ice-production problem; ice in the bucket that will not come through the dispenser points to a dispenser problem. Samsung treats those as separate faults, so do not reset or replace the ice maker based only on a dispenser that will not deliver stored ice.
- No ice: Check temperature, the ice-maker setting, bucket seating, and then the test procedure.
- Too little ice: Check those same basics, allow time for production, and consider water pressure if the supply line was recently adjusted.
- Small, cloudy, dirty, or clumped ice: Consider the filter, water pressure, and mineral content; cloudy white ice alone can be normal.
- Stuck bucket or a block of ice: Follow the instructions for your exact model. Do not force the bucket or manually defrost the ice maker.
Check freezer temperature and cooling
Samsung says the freezer must be at 0°F or colder for ice production, including when the ice maker is located in the refrigerator compartment. If the setting is warmer, set it to 0°F or lower and use Power Freeze if your model offers it; Samsung advises checking again after three hours. If the freezer still cannot reach the required temperature, address the cooling problem rather than treating this as a reset issue.
Make sure the relevant door closes fully and seals properly. A compartment that is not staying cold enough can interrupt ice production. If the compartment or bucket is frosted, follow model-specific guidance; do not try to defrost the ice maker yourself.

Check the ice-maker setting and bucket
Check the refrigerator display for Ice Off or the equivalent control. Depending on the model, the display may instead show an Ice On indicator, and some Family Hub or SmartThings-capable refrigerators offer ice controls through those interfaces. Dual ice-maker models may have separate controls, so verify the setting for the ice maker that is not producing.
- Confirm the bucket is fully installed and latched.
- Keep the bucket clear of objects other than ice; a scoop or other item can interfere with full-bucket detection.
- On some dual cubed-ice/Ice Bites models, bucket orientation matters.
Use the user manual for your exact model to confirm the correct bucket position and removal method. Do not force a bucket that will not come out.

Allow for normal ice-production time
Samsung UK says production depends on temperature, usage, and ice-maker type. Its guidance estimates around 120 cubes per day, or 10–12 cubes every 45–60 minutes, but these are regional estimates rather than guarantees for every refrigerator or usage pattern. After installation or when the bin is empty, Samsung says filling it may take 24 hours or more. Give the refrigerator time before concluding that a low bucket means the ice maker has failed.
Use the test button only as your model directs
The test button’s location and access method vary by ice-maker design. Use Samsung’s instructions for your model before removing a bucket or cover. Hold the button marked Test until the specified chime; some models can take up to ten seconds, and test duration differs by type.

- Find the model-specific test and bucket-access instructions in the user manual or Samsung support guidance.
- Hold Test as directed and listen for the chime or watch for the ice maker to move.
- If there is no chime and no movement, Samsung advises powering the refrigerator off for two minutes—by unplugging it or switching off its circuit breaker—then retrying the test as directed.
- If an error code appears after power is restored, or the correctly performed test still gives no response, arrange service.
Do not keep pressing Test after the tray has filled with water or ice: water can overflow and ice can jam. Samsung describes reset as a last resort after more likely checks, and advises against resetting more than once per day. Repeated chimes during testing are also a reason to contact Samsung service.

Low production or undersized cubes
Low water pressure can stop ice production or result in undersized cubes. Samsung’s US guidance calls for confirming at least 20 psi when the water line was recently adjusted or when the ice maker has not worked properly since that line was adjusted or installed. That threshold is given in this specific context; consult the refrigerator manual for model-specific requirements. Samsung recommends contacting a plumber if pressure is inadequate. Reverse-osmosis filtration can also lower pressure.

Small, cloudy, dirty, or clumped ice
Samsung lists a dirty water filter, low pressure, and high mineral deposits as possible causes of poor-looking or clumped ice. A replacement filter may help when the filter is actually the issue, but it is not a universal fix for an ice maker that is silent or does not cycle. Confirm the refrigerator’s exact model and filter compatibility before buying or installing a replacement.
Cloudy white ice is not automatically evidence of a dirty filter. Samsung explains that rapid freezing can trap small amounts of minerals and gases, making cloudiness normal.
Know when to stop troubleshooting
Samsung warns: “Do not attempt to defrost your ice maker, as this may damage the ice maker.” The ice maker has an automatic defrost function; if that function is not working, Samsung says service is required. Do not use heat, tools, or force to clear a frozen unit or remove a stuck bucket.
Contact Samsung service if the test produces repeated chimes, or if the ice maker does not respond after you have followed the correct model-specific test and power-cycle steps. If the freezer itself cannot reach 0°F, the cooling fault also needs attention before ice-maker troubleshooting can succeed.
