Cardboard can do more than protect products in transit: researchers and architects have used paper-based materials to prototype emergency shelters, modular building panels and temporary structures. These are engineered systems, not ordinary boxes repurposed as building materials. Their usefulness depends on structural design, assembly, weather exposure and protection from moisture and fire.
How cardboard is being used in architecture
The strongest documented examples are research projects and prototypes exploring paper-based materials for temporary or emergency construction. They show what designers can investigate—not that cardboard is automatically suitable for a building. Each system needs to be judged in context, including its intended duration, structural demands and exposure to the elements.
Paper structures and emergency shelters
Architect Jerzy F. Łątka’s TU Delft dissertation chapter examines realized prototypes in which paper and paper derivatives serve as principal structural materials. It asks how suitable cardboard may be for emergency architecture. The work supports describing cardboard as a material under architectural investigation, rather than as a universal shelter solution. ICARO prefabricated panels
The University of Catania’s ICARO (Innovative Cardboard Architectural Object) system uses prefabricated panels for vertical building envelopes. Each panel has a laminated wood frame enclosing corrugated cardboard boxes, with prestressing used to improve structural performance. A full-scale prototype called the Experience Pavilion was built in the archaeological area of Megara Hyblea, Sicily. The university record describes a test campaign as planned; it does not establish that every durability or performance test has been completed. See the University of Catania record.

Temporary buildings as a research focus
TU Darmstadt’s Paper Construction and Design group identifies transitional schools, emergency shelters and microhomes as potential temporary applications. Its work considers load-bearing behavior, building physics, life-cycle and circularity questions, and durability in real weather. What the prototypes do—and do not—establish
Prototypes demonstrate that paper-based components can be designed and assembled into architectural systems. They do not, by themselves, show that a design is safe for a particular site, climate, occupancy or period of use. Performance depends on the complete system: materials, connections, structural design, protective measures and maintenance.

For example, the ICARO panel combines corrugated cardboard with a laminated wood frame and prestressing. Its performance cannot be attributed to cardboard alone. Likewise, the existence of a full-scale pavilion does not establish that the same panel is suitable for ordinary permanent construction or for every weather condition.

Design questions that matter before cardboard becomes a building component
When assessing a paper-based construction concept, the relevant questions are about the complete design and its use—not just the material name.
- Purpose and duration: Is the structure intended for a short-term emergency, a transitional use or a longer service life?
- Structural performance: What loads must the panels and connections resist, and has the assembled system been assessed for those conditions?
- Moisture and weather: How will the design manage rain, humidity and other exposure over its intended life?
- Fire protection: What protective measures and testing are appropriate for the intended application?
- Transport and assembly: Can components be moved and installed as planned without compromising their connections or protection?
- End of life: How do frames, coatings, fasteners and other combined materials affect reuse or recycling?
These are evaluation axes, not a ranking of the systems discussed here. The cited work does not provide a shared head-to-head dataset that would support declaring one approach better than another.

Recent prototypes and an earlier engineered-fiberboard concept
Five full-scale emergency-house prototypes
A 2025 research article record describes iterative development of five full-scale TECH emergency-house prototypes using paper-based materials, including corrugated cardboard, honeycomb panels and paper tubes. The project’s methods included material testing, thermal simulations and prototyping. The record establishes the scope of that work, but does not provide enough detail here to compare the prototypes’ performance or report specific results. View the 2025 article record.
Three-dimensional engineered fiberboard
A 2006 USDA Forest Products Laboratory report described a proposed three-dimensional engineered fiberboard concept for lightweight temporary shelters. It said the material could use biofibers including recycled paper and identified commercialization and further system development as next steps at the time. That makes it a historical research concept, not evidence that a product is currently available to buy. Read the USDA report.

What this means for a construction project
Cardboard’s architectural applications are best understood as design and engineering work. The documented examples involve prototypes, layered or framed components, and research into structural and building-physics performance. A used shipping box is not an equivalent substitute for an engineered panel, and the examples do not establish suitability for routine permanent construction.
For a small model or creative prototype, corrugated cardboard sheets may be useful as a craft material. That is a separate use from building construction: craft sheets are not substitutes for tested, engineered building components.
