In many low-voltage DC circuits, red is commonly used for positive and black for negativeโbut wire color is only a clue, not proof. In AC building wiring, conductors are identified by roles such as hot, neutral, and equipment ground, not by DC positive and negative. Never handle an unknown or energized wire based on color alone.
What red usually means in a low-voltage DC circuit
DC circuits have positive and negative polarity. In many battery circuits, red is commonly used for positive and black for negative. That is a convention, not a universal rule: equipment markings, wiring diagrams, and the specific application determine the intended connections.
The OSHA rules cited here do not establish a universal red-positive color code for low-voltage equipment. A red lead on an unfamiliar device therefore cannot be identified safely from color alone.
How AC building wiring is different
For AC premises wiring, the relevant conductor functions are generally described as ungrounded (often called hot), grounded (neutral, where applicable), and equipment grounding. These are not interchangeable with DC positive and negative. A red conductor in an AC installation may be ungrounded, but its role must be established from the circuit and applicable documentationโnot assumed from its color.

Neutral and equipment ground are distinct functions. OSHA separately identifies grounded conductors and equipment-grounding conductors, and restricts grounding terminals and devices to grounding use. Treating neutral as ground, or the reverse, is not a safe substitute for correct identification.
What U.S. OSHA rules require
OSHAโs general-industry rule requires grounded and equipment-grounding conductors to be identifiable and distinguishable. It also states: โNo grounded conductor may be attached to any terminal or lead so as to reverse designated polarity.โ The rule addresses U.S. general-industry workplaces; it is not a complete residential wiring guide or a universal rule for every jurisdiction or product. For U.S. construction work, OSHA requires general-wiring conductors to be insulated unless an exception applies, with insulation suitable for the voltage, operating temperature, and location. Insulated conductors must be distinguishable by appropriate color or another means as grounded, ungrounded, or equipment-grounding conductors. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.405

How to identify an unfamiliar wire safely
- Check the equipment labels, wiring diagram, and circuit documentation for the conductorโs intended function.
- Do not touch, cut, disconnect, or reconnect an unknown conductor based on color.
- For an unknown building circuit or any mains wiring, have a qualified person identify it. A meter may help verify an appropriate low-voltage circuit, but using one does not make live mains work safe.
