A hygrometer and a humidity meter usually mean the same kind of instrument. “Hygrometer” is the established technical term; “humidity meter” is a plain-language label. Neither name alone tells you what the device measures or how dependable its reading is. For construction work, choose by the quantity measured, accuracy, operating range, and calibration—not by the product name.
Are a hygrometer and a humidity meter different?
In ordinary product listings, the terms overlap: a humidity meter is commonly a hygrometer described in everyday language. “Humidity meter” does not identify a separate measurement technology or guarantee a particular level of accuracy. Check the instrument’s specifications to understand what it actually reports.
What does the instrument measure?
“Humidity” can refer to several different quantities. Instruments may report relative humidity (RH), dew point or frost point, water amount fraction (also called water mole fraction), or water mass ratio. The display and specification sheet should identify the measured or calculated quantity; a device that reports RH is not interchangeable with one intended to measure dew point for every task.
Relative humidity
Relative humidity is temperature-dependent, so the temperature context matters when interpreting a reading. NIST calibrates RH sensors in a temperature-controlled chamber with humidified air flowing through it. For construction monitoring, record the temperature along with RH where relevant, and use readings appropriate to the material or process being assessed.

Dew point and other quantities
A chilled-mirror hygrometer measures dew point. NIST’s described calibration compares the instrument’s external temperature probe with a reference thermometer. A gravimetric hygrometer works differently: it separates water from a gas and measures the respective masses. NIST notes that dew point and RH can also be determined from mole fraction with additional pressure and temperature measurements.
How to choose one for construction or indoor monitoring
- Identify the required quantity. For general room monitoring, a temperature-and-RH display may be sufficient. If a specification or process calls for dew point or another quantity, choose an instrument that measures or derives that quantity.
- Check accuracy, not just resolution. Resolution is the smallest displayed increment; accuracy or uncertainty describes how close the result may be to the true value. Compare the maker’s stated accuracy across the range you will use and under the stated operating conditions.
- Match the range and environment. Check temperature and humidity limits, and whether the instrument permits condensing conditions. A tool specified only for non-condensing use may not be suitable where condensation can occur.
- Consider calibration needs. For routine checks, a consumer instrument may meet the need; for controlled or precision work, confirm that calibration is available and appropriate to the required range and accuracy.
- Use readings in context. Follow the material, building-system, or project requirements that apply. A humidity reading by itself does not establish that a substrate or space meets a project’s acceptance criteria.
Why specifications matter more than the label
NIST’s Dickson TH550 listing illustrates how much model specifications can tell you. The listed instrument has a 0–95% RH range for non-condensing conditions, 1% RH resolution, and humidity accuracy of ±2% RH from 0 to 60% and ±3% RH from 61 to 95% at 23 °C. These figures apply to that specific listed instrument; they are not typical values for all hygrometers, nor do they describe current consumer products generally.

Calibration-system performance is also different from an instrument’s own accuracy. NIST reports a relative-humidity calibration uncertainty of 0.5% of value for its stated service range and chamber-temperature conditions. A 2021 NIST publication reports total expanded relative uncertainty below 0.3% in its Hybrid Humidity Generator test chamber, and less than 0.025 °C total expanded uncertainty (k = 2) for dew/frost-point temperatures above −60 °C in the described calibration system. These are results for NIST methods and conditions, not accuracy claims for an off-the-shelf home or jobsite meter.

For an ordinary indoor reading, a digital hygrometer—or a product listed as an indoor humidity meter or temperature-and-humidity meter—may be the right category. For construction or technical use, compare the actual measured quantity, accuracy, range, environmental limits, and calibration options against the job’s requirements. The word on the package is not a performance specification.
