Despite their similar names, they measure different properties in different media, so neither is a substitute for the other.
What is the difference between a hydrometer and a hygrometer?

The Royal Society of Chemistry gives the same core distinction: a hydrometer floats in liquid to measure density or specific gravity, while a hygrometer measures water vapour in air (RSC Education, “Hygrometer or hydrometer?”).
How does a hydrometer work?
A hydrometer floats in the liquid being tested, and the scale on the instrument is used to read density or specific gravity. Hydrometers are made for particular measurements, so use one whose scale and intended application match the liquid and purpose. The Government of Canada’s manual notes uses in laboratory work, petroleum and dairy contexts, and alcohol production; it does not establish one universal scale or temperature-correction procedure for all hydrometers (Government of Canada, “Mercury Content in Measuring Devices: Manual for Federal Facilities,” 2004).
How does a hygrometer measure humidity?
Hygrometer is a broad category, not one mechanism. Different designs measure or derive different humidity quantities, so check what the instrument reports before comparing its reading with another device. The National Institute of Standards and Technology distinguishes humidity quantities and explains that relative humidity can be derived from water amount fraction together with pressure and temperature (NIST, “Gravimetric Hygrometer,” page created August 14, 2025).

Psychrometers: compare wet- and dry-bulb temperatures
A wet- and dry-bulb psychrometer has a dry sensor and a moistened sensor. Evaporation cools the wet sensor; the temperature difference between the two is used to determine relative humidity. The IUPAC Gold Book defines a psychrometric hygrometer by this wet- and dry-bulb principle (IUPAC Gold Book, “psychrometric hygrometer,” fifth edition, version 5.0.0 (2025)).
Dew-point instruments: detect condensation on a cooled mirror
A dew-point hygrometer cools a mirror until condensation appears, then measures the mirror temperature. This provides a dew-point reading rather than making every hygrometer a relative-humidity meter.

Polymer sensors: respond to humidity-dependent material properties
Some hygrometers use a polymer sensor whose properties change in response to humidity. This is one example of a sensor-based approach; it does not describe every hygrometer. PTB’s overview describes several hygrometer functional principles (PTB, “Hygrometers and their functional principles – an overview,” approximately 2025).
Why does the humidity quantity matter?
Relative humidity is temperature-dependent, so it is not simply another name for the absolute amount of water in the air. Before comparing readings, identify whether each instrument reports relative humidity, dew or frost point, or water amount fraction. A difference in the reported quantity can make two numbers incomparable even when both instruments are used in air.

Which instrument should you use?
- Choose a hydrometer when you need to measure a liquid’s density or specific gravity. Match its scale and intended use to the liquid and task.
- Choose a hygrometer when you need to measure humidity in air or another gas. Check which humidity quantity it reports and whether its measurement principle suits the application.
- Consider calibration traceability when the measurement requires documented, traceable accuracy. NIST calibrates humidity instruments by exposing them to air with accurately known moisture content; its gravimetric hygrometer supports humidity standards and calibration.
NIST reports 0.09% relative uncertainty over most of the gravimetric hygrometer’s range under optimal conditions. That figure describes NIST’s specialized metrology instrument, not consumer room hygrometers (NIST, “Gravimetric Hygrometer,” page created August 14, 2025).
