A hydraulic press uses fluid pressure to move a ram and apply force through tooling. In metalworking, that broad description covers different machines and processes: a general hydraulic shop press is not the same as a press brake designed to bend sheet metal. Choose by the operation, workpiece, machine geometry, tooling and safeguards—not by tonnage alone.
What a hydraulic press does
Hydraulic presses use hydraulic power to move a ram and apply force through dies or other tooling. OSHA notes that hydraulic presses can normally be stopped at any point in the cycle and that the force exerted by their dies can be varied. Those are general characteristics, not guarantees for every machine, control system or setup. The machine’s documentation determines its actual capabilities and limits.
There are many varieties of hydraulic presses performing many processes. The term alone does not identify a suitable machine, define its work envelope or establish which tooling a job requires. Confirm the intended operation and setup with the manufacturer’s information and qualified personnel.
Hydraulic shop press or press brake?
These terms are not interchangeable. A hydraulic shop press is a broad category; a press brake is a purpose-specific machine used primarily to bend and form sheet metal. If the job is sheet-metal bending, look for a press brake and verify its suitability for the material, dimensions and forming task. A general shop press should not be assumed to have the workflow or tooling of a press brake.

| Machine | Primary use described by OSHA | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic press | A varied category used for many processes; the general label does not specify a particular application. | Intended operation, rated capacity, work envelope, stroke, tooling, controls and safeguards for the specific machine and task. |
| Powered press brake | Primarily bending and forming sheet metal. | Suitability for the sheet-metal work, die selection and installation, workpiece positioning, operating controls and safeguarding. |
| Mechanical power press | Uses tools or dies attached to slides or rams and mechanically driven motion. | Its distinct machine type and applicable documentation; do not treat it as a hydraulic press. |
OSHA describes press-brake operators as selecting and installing dies, positioning stock, activating the cycle and removing the formed piece. The hydraulic press operator workflow OSHA describes likewise involves placing stock on a bottom die, positioning it, activating the cycle and removing the part. Those descriptions do not make the machines or their tooling equivalent.
How to choose a hydraulic shop press
Start with the job and workpiece, then compare machine specifications against the actual setup. No single press size or configuration suits all work, and the reviewed OSHA guidance does not establish a safe tonnage recommendation or sizing formula.

- Operation and workpiece: Identify what the press must do and the material and dimensions involved. If the operation is sheet-metal bending, determine whether a press brake is the appropriate machine type.
- Rated force or capacity: Check the machine’s rating and manufacturer documentation for the intended operation. A capacity label alone does not make a particular die, workpiece or setup safe.
- Working width and opening: Confirm that the frame and available opening accommodate the work and tooling. These dimensions vary by machine.
- Stroke: Check the ram’s available travel against the operation and tooling requirements.
- Tooling and die compatibility: Verify that dies and other tooling are intended for the machine and the task. Do not assume that tooling fits across machines.
- Controls: Understand how the machine starts, stops and cycles, and whether the controls suit the task and workplace.
- Safeguarding: Assess protection at the point of operation and other hazards for the actual machine, tooling and work process.
- Manufacturer instructions: Use the machine’s documentation to confirm operating limits, setup requirements and compatible equipment before purchase or use.
Point-of-operation hazards and safeguards
The point of operation—the area where the press and tooling act on the material—is a major hazard. OSHA warns: “A hand or other body part near the point of operation during cycling can result in severe injury.” Keep hands and other body parts out of that danger area during cycling, and do not treat careful positioning alone as a substitute for appropriate safeguards.
OSHA’s hydraulic press guidance says general machine guards must protect operators and others from hazards including the point of operation and nip points. It names barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices and electronic safety devices as examples. They are not universal, plug-and-play solutions: safeguard selection must suit the machine, tooling, task and workplace risk assessment.

- 20 Ton Strong Load Capacity: Our hydraulic press helps you easily disassemble and install automotive bushings, ball joints, U-joints, and more, as well as straighten, bend, and stamp metal parts. Whether you're a professional or a DIY car repair enthusiast, it allows for quick and simple operation.
- Hydraulic and Pneumatic: Equipped with a pneumatic assist pump and a quick connector for easy attachment to an air compressor, this hydraulic shop press’s system significantly lowers effort, allowing for smoother and more efficient operation, especially during heavy-duty tasks.
- Adjustable Height: The hydraulic shop press’s worktable features a quick-adjust pin system with 9 height settings, ranging from 2.6 to 40.5 inches (65-1030 mm), providing flexible working positions. The cylinder stroke is 5.5 inches (140 mm). Note: Exceeding the cylinder stroke range may cause damage to the cylinder seals.
- Triangular Base Reinforcement: Upgraded with a triangular brace, the hydraulic shop press’s triangular structure significantly enhances base stability. Combined with the H-shaped frame, the press remains steady and wobbling-resistant during the operation of fastening components.
- Heavy-Duty Construction: Built with thickened steel, this structure offers enhanced weight-bearing capacity and durability. The large-diameter pressure column is designed to minimize slipping, ensuring sturdiness and long-lasting performance, even under heavy use.
Before operating a press, make sure the people responsible for the machine understand its controls and safeguards and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and workplace safety procedures. Have qualified safety personnel assess the specific installation and work process; a generic press description cannot establish that a particular setup is adequately protected.
What OSHA’s mechanical power press standard covers
OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.217 is the mechanical power presses standard. Its scope explicitly excludes several other machine types, including hydraulic presses and press brakes. The regulation states: “Press brakes, hydraulic and pneumatic power presses, bulldozers, hot bending and hot metal presses, forging presses and hammers, riveting machines and similar types of fastener applicators are excluded from the requirements of this section.”

OSHA’s hydraulic press material supports a general understanding of the machine category, operator workflow and hazards, but it does not provide a comprehensive list of metalworking applications or a formula for choosing tonnage. It also does not establish that a particular configuration, capacity or guard is right for a given job. No hydraulic-press-specific injury statistic or named-person quotation is established in the sources cited here.
