In one small school project, hydroponically grown pechay had more leaves and greater average height than pechay grown in soil. The result describes that project’s setup—not proof that hydroponics always grows better crops or reduces famine.
What did the pechay study compare?
The investigatory project from Prenza National High School compared pechay (Brassica rapa) grown hydroponically and in soil. Its stated measurements were true-leaf count, plant height, wet weight, dry weight, and moisture content. The report framed hydroponics as relevant to food supply and poverty, but the experiment measured plant growth; it did not test food security or famine outcomes. How the experiment was set up
The methods describe 24 seedlings germinated for three weeks, with 12 assigned to each growing method. Hydroponic seedlings were placed in coco peat plugs in improvised boxes with water and SNAP Hydroponics Nutrient Solutions A and B. The soil group was planted in seedling bags filled with loam soil. The project describes observations for up to 45 days.

These are the student project’s reported results, not independently verified measurements. Its weight tables contain unusually large kilogram-scale values for a 12-plant group, so they should not be treated as typical plant weights or used to estimate crop yield. The report’s conclusion attributes the observed difference to nutrient availability, but the experiment does not establish that as the sole cause.

Does this show hydroponics is better than soil?
No universal winner follows from this comparison. It indicates that the hydroponic group performed better on the reported growth measures in this particular setup. Results can differ with the crop and variety, system and medium, nutrient and water management, growing duration, sample size, outcome measured, and production costs.
Other studies illustrate why those distinctions matter. A 2024 commercial case study of leafy vegetables produced by a company in Shanghai reported the highest fresh weight for hydroponics at an early growth stage, but the greatest unit yield for soil cultivation: 0.98–1.21 kg/m². It also reported higher unit costs for soilless cultivation. That commercial case is not a replication of the pechay project. Zha et al., Agronomy (2024)

A spinach study conducted in winter 2022 and first published online in 2024 compared an NFT hydroponic setup using potting mix with traditional soil-grown spinach. It reported greater leaf and growth traits for its hydroponic treatment, while nitrogen accumulation was similar. Different crop and setup mean it cannot settle which method is better for pechay. - Crop and variety: compare the same pechay variety rather than drawing conclusions across unrelated crops.
- Growing method: specify the hydroponic system, growing medium, and soil type.
- Inputs and care: record nutrient formulation, water management, light, pest control, and other growing conditions.
- Duration and stage: compare plants at the same age or harvest stage.
- Sample and controls: report how many plants were grown and how conditions were kept comparable.
- Outcome: distinguish leaf count or height from harvested yield per area; distinguish fresh weight from dry weight.
- Costs: account for setup, inputs, and ongoing operation rather than judging only plant growth.
The school report itself recommends better shelter and facilities, pest netting, and a longer observation period. Those improvements would help clarify how well the result holds under more controlled and extended conditions.

For a grower, the project is a small, local example in which hydroponic pechay showed stronger reported growth than its soil comparison. It does not establish expected harvest quantities, profitability, or performance in other settings. Its use of SNAP Nutrient Solutions A and B identifies the formulation used in the project; it does not show that another nutrient product would produce the same result.
