Yes—you can propagate lilacs from stem cuttings. Take a softwood cutting from flexible, current-season growth once it is mature enough to snap when sharply bent. Keep it from drying out and plant it in a moist, well-draining medium. The right stage matters more than a single calendar date, and rooting is not guaranteed.

When to take lilac cuttings

Take softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer, when new shoots have begun to mature but are still flexible. Avoid very tender tips. Iowa State University Extension gives late May through early July as its usual window; University of Missouri Extension gives June and July, sometimes August. These are regional guides, not universal dates: use the shoot’s maturity and your local growing conditions to judge the timing.

Choose vegetative shoots with mature leaves rather than shoots carrying flower buds. UF/IFAS gives this preference for the cultivar ‘Charles Joly’.

How to take and plant a softwood cutting

  1. Choose a suitable shoot. Select healthy, current-season growth that bends but is mature enough to snap when sharply bent. Avoid very tender growth.
  2. Take the cutting when conditions are suitable. Work during the late-spring-to-summer growth window for your region. Keep cut material from drying while you prepare it.
  3. Prepare a rooting medium. Use a medium that holds moisture but drains well. Coarse sand, perlite, and vermiculite are examples recommended in Iowa State Extension’s softwood-cutting guidance.
  4. Use rooting hormone only if desired. You may dip the cut end in a root-promoting product, following its label. Iowa State recommends this aid for softwood cuttings; it is not a requirement or a guarantee.
  5. Set the cutting in the medium and maintain moisture. Keep the medium moist, not waterlogged, and prevent the cutting from drying out while it roots.

How long lilac cuttings take to root

There is no general rooting time or success percentage established for lilacs. UF/IFAS lists 4–8 weeks to rooting and a soil temperature of 65–70°F for its propagation entry for ‘Charles Joly’, with intermittent mist. Those are cultivar-specific production conditions, not a promise for every lilac or a typical home setup.

Rooting can be difficult, and timing and results vary with the plant and conditions. New Mexico State University Extension’s 2005 regional answer cautions that the window for taking lilac cuttings can be narrow, particularly with very tender new growth. That caution is not a measured success rate.

Other ways to propagate lilacs

Method Plant material and timing What the guidance establishes
Softwood stem cutting Flexible current-season shoot in late spring or summer, when mature enough to snap when sharply bent Recommended home-garden approach; use a moist, well-draining medium. Iowa State Extension calls it the best propagation method for lilacs.
Root cutting Root material taken while the plant is dormant UF/IFAS describes root cuttings typically 3–6 inches long; keep the root oriented correctly and use a well-drained medium.
Layering A branch layered in early summer Listed as an alternative by University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Propagation methods do not have comparative success-rate figures in the cited guidance. Cultivars and species may also differ: for example, NC State Extension identifies softwood cuttings as an option for Persian lilac (Syringa persica), but that does not establish identical timing or results for all lilacs.

Why taking any stem after flowering may not work

As New Mexico State University Extension frames the question, a gardener may wonder whether a lilac can be grown from stems cut after blooming. The key is not simply that flowering has finished: select the right kind and maturity of growth. A softwood shoot should be flexible but no longer very tender, and it must be kept from drying while it roots.
