How to Move a Houseplant Into a Larger Container

Repot a houseplant in a modestly larger pot with drainage, keeping the root ball at its original soil depth and watering thoroughly after backfilling.

Move a container plant into a pot only modestly larger than its current one, keep it at the same soil depth, and use a pot with drainage holes. For most houseplants, a new pot about 1–2 inches wider in diameter is a common guideline. The steps below are for houseplants; outdoor woody plants and flowering perennials may need different sizing.

How to tell whether your plant needs repotting

Roots poking through drainage holes, a densely packed root ball, potting mix that dries unusually quickly, frequent wilting, or slowed growth can all be reasons to inspect the plant. None is a diagnosis on its own: check the roots and overall condition before choosing a larger pot. See guidance from Penn State Extension, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and Illinois Extension.

Choose the pot and potting mix

Size the new pot for a houseplant

Choose a pot about 1–2 inches wider in diameter than the old one, a common houseplant recommendation from Illinois Extension. Iowa State says a houseplant may move up one or perhaps two container sizes. A substantially larger pot holds more unused mix, which can stay wet longer than the plant’s roots need.

Do not apply every plant-sizing rule interchangeably. UGA Extension’s 3–4-inch increase is guidance for most container-grown woody ornamentals and flowering perennials, not a general houseplant rule.

Make sure water can drain

Use a pot with drainage holes. If you want a decorative container without holes, keep the plant in a draining inner pot and use the decorative one as a cachepot; empty water that collects in the outer pot. Skip a gravel layer at the bottom: Iowa State warns it can leave a wetter zone near the roots rather than improve drainage.

Use fresh mix suited to the plant

Choose fresh potting mix appropriate for your plant rather than assuming one blend suits every houseplant. Penn State’s repotting guidance also notes that a new, porous, unglazed clay pot may need soaking before use.

Repot the plant step by step

  1. Prepare the workspace. Set out the clean, modestly larger pot, suitable fresh potting mix, and a surface that can catch loose soil. Confirm that the new pot has drainage holes.
  2. Ease the plant out of its old pot. Support the root ball as you remove it. Squeeze a flexible plastic pot or carefully loosen the mix around the edge if needed. Do not pull the plant out by its stem or trunk.
  3. Inspect and tidy the roots. Remove dead, damaged, or decayed roots. Gently loosen roots that are matted or circling around the root ball. Cutting healthy roots is not a routine requirement; reserve it for roots that are tightly bound or must be removed because they are damaged.
  4. Add mix beneath the root ball. Put enough fresh mix in the new pot so the plant will sit at its former soil depth, with some space below the rim for watering. Do not bury the stem or trunk deeper than before.
  5. Center the plant and backfill. Hold the plant in position and add mix around the root ball. Lightly firm the mix to close large air pockets, but do not pack it densely.
  6. Water and drain. Water thoroughly, then let excess water drain from the pot. If you use a cachepot, empty water from the outer vessel rather than leaving the inner pot standing in it.

When to repot

Spring or another period of active growth is often presented as a favorable time to repot. It is a preference, not a requirement: Iowa State says houseplants can be repotted any time of year. If the plant needs attention, use its condition rather than treating a particular season as the only opportunity.
