SawStop detects a change in an electrical signal on its blade when skin touches it. It then drives an aluminum brake into the spinning blade, cuts motor power and retracts the blade assembly below the table. SawStop says this stop-and-drop sequence takes less than five milliseconds, but the system reduces injury risk; it does not guarantee an injury-free contact.
What happens when skin contacts the blade?
- The saw monitors the blade. Electrodes around the arbor induce a low-voltage, high-frequency signal on the blade. SawStop’s owner’s manual explains that skin absorbs part of the signal because the body has electrical capacitance. The resulting change is detected as contact.
- A brake stops the blade. The detection unit releases a spring-loaded aluminum pawl into the blade’s teeth. The teeth cut into the pawl as the blade stops, and the saw shuts off motor power.
- The blade assembly retracts. At or near operating speed, the blade and arbor assembly drop below the tabletop. SawStop says the blade’s angular momentum drives this retraction after the blade is stopped.
- The saw needs service before reuse. The activated cartridge is expended. The arbor retraction must be reset, and the blade needs inspection because the pawl may damage or pull teeth from it.
SawStop reports that the stop-and-drop sequence takes less than five milliseconds. That is the manufacturer’s published figure, not an independently verified measurement. A fast-moving hand can still suffer a serious injury, so the system is not a substitute for safe work practices.
What can trigger the brake besides skin?
The system responds to changes in the blade signal, so conductive work material can also activate it. SawStop’s manual identifies metals and carbon-fiber materials as examples. Its FAQ notes that most wet wood can be cut without activation, but sufficiently wet or green wood and some pressure-treated wood may be conductive. Whether a particular piece triggers the brake depends on its conductivity; wet wood does not always behave the same way.
SawStop describes bypass mode as a way to cut material that would otherwise trigger the brake. In bypass mode, the braking feature is disengaged: the saw no longer provides that protection. Follow the instructions for the specific saw model when using this mode.
#1 Best Overall
- SawStop's patented Safety System stops on contact with skin.
- Portable Durability: Heavy-duty construction that's built to last and provides the stability you need for smooth cuts on the job site.
- Rack & Pinion Fence: Easy to adjust or remove and always square, the rack & pinion fence has built-in high and low shelf to support all types of cuts.
- Quick Tilt: Quickly and easily tilt the blade to your ideal angle. Further fine-tune with the micro tilt-adjust feature.
Does the operator need to be grounded?
No. SawStop says the system is designed to activate on body contact whether or not the operator is grounded. The trigger is the change in the blade’s electrical signal when it contacts skin, not a path from the operator to ground.
What does the system not replace?
- Blade guards and safe technique: SawStop recommends using the blade guard whenever possible. Its safety feature does not remove the risks of operating a table saw.
- Gloves: SawStop advises against wearing gloves because they can snag and pull a hand toward the blade.
- Care around contact: SawStop says most contacts result in a minor cut, but warns that a hand moving very quickly can still be seriously injured. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independently quantified injury rate.
What happens after an activation?
The cartridge cannot be reused: its pawl and internal components have been expended. Resetting also requires restoring the arbor block to its support mechanism and assessing the blade. Because the pawl can pull carbide teeth from the blade, do not assume the blade is safe to use again without inspection. Disconnect power and follow the owner’s manual for the exact saw model before replacing parts or resetting the mechanism.

- 36-INCH T-GLIDE FENCE ASSEMBLY: The 36-inch T-Glide Fence & Rail are made of heavy-gauge steel for sure lockdown and reliably square cutting for years without deflection.
- SAWSTOP PATENTED SAFETY SYSTEM: Stops a spinning blade on contact with skin. The blade stops in less than 5 milliseconds, and drops below the table, minimizing a potentially life-altering injury to a mere scratch.
- UNMATCHED QUALITY: The trunnion and arbor are built for precision, strength and stability. The gas piston elevation delivers smooth and easy adjustability. Table flatness is measured diagonally at 0.010” maximum gap.
- DUST COLLECTION: 99% dust collection is delivered above the table with the available dust collection blade guard (Model # TSG-DC, sold separately), and below the table with advanced shrouding around the blade. Available Overarm Dust Collection (Model # TSA-ODC, sold separately) routes dust away from the blade and into the 4” port.
- RELIABILITY: The Control Box houses the on-off switch, power paddle, and on-board computer, and constantly checks that all systems are working to reliably keep you safe.
SawStop’s FAQ lists two cartridge configurations. Its listed prices are manufacturer-published prices accessed October 8, 2026, and may change; check the current listing and confirm compatibility with your saw model and blade setup before buying.
| Cartridge | Use | SawStop-listed price |

- Compact stowed dimensions (26.5" L × 29" W × 45" H) make transport and storage easy
- Class-leading 24 5/8" table depth enhances accuracy and control during large cuts
- One-turn elevation system raises or lowers the blade quickly for fast setup and adjustments
- Includes SawStop's patented flesh-detection safety system — detects contact with skin and stops the blade in under 5 milliseconds to prevent serious injury
How does the saw check itself?
SawStop says the system continuously checks itself and prevents the motor from running if it detects a component fault. Its FAQ also says the brake can still respond during coast-down while power remains available, including after the main switch is turned off. A power outage or unplugging interrupts that condition.
