How to Force Bulbs Indoors for a Succession of Blooms

Plan indoor flowers by matching the bulb to your schedule: chill spring bulbs well in advance, or plant paperwhites for a quicker winter display.

You can bring flowers indoors through much of the year by planting successive batches, but no single bulb flowers continuously. For spring bulbs such as tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocus, plan on roughly 12–15 weeks of cold treatment followed by about two to four weeks indoors. Paperwhites skip the long chill and usually flower four to six weeks after planting; Hippeastrum (often sold as amaryllis) offers another indoor option.

What forcing bulbs means—and which bulbs need chilling

Forcing means manipulating a bulb’s conditions so it flowers earlier than it normally would. Many spring-flowering bulbs need a winter-like cold period before they will bloom indoors. University of Missouri Extension horticulturist David Trinklein explains, “Spring bulbs have a chilling requirement, meaning they must be exposed to cool temperatures before they will flower.” (University of Missouri Extension, October 6, 2022.)

Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocus generally follow the chill-then-grow method. Paperwhites and Hippeastrum are different: they do not depend on that same long chilling phase, so they are useful when you want flowers without months of advance preparation. Exact timing varies by species, cultivar and bulb preparation; follow the bulb supplier’s instructions when available.

Choose a method for your schedule

Bulb type Preparation and approximate timing Best use
Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocus Typically 12–15 weeks cold, then two to four weeks indoors; cultivar-specific timing varies. (University of Illinois Extension, 2025.) Planned winter and early-spring displays, started well in advance.
Paperwhites Usually flower four to six weeks after planting; no long chill required. (University of Illinois Extension, 2024.) Quicker winter flowers and easy staggered batches.
Hippeastrum (amaryllis) Plant a prepared bulb and grow it indoors; the cited guidance does not give a single universal bloom timetable. A prominent indoor flower and a bulb with a practical managed rebloom cycle.

Schedule a succession of flowers

For most chilled spring bulbs, count back about 14–19 weeks from your target display date: roughly 12–15 weeks of cold treatment plus two to four weeks indoors. This is a planning range, not a guaranteed calendar. Illinois Extension’s example for Valentine’s Day recommends starting by mid-October. Prepared hyacinths may have shorter supplier schedules: the Royal Horticultural Society’s Christmas examples give ‘Pink Pearl’ ten weeks cool plus 22 days indoors, and ‘Anna Marie’ eight weeks cool plus 18 days indoors. To spread flowering across winter, start separate pots at intervals, then bring each pot out of cold storage in turn. Paperwhites need less lead time: University of Illinois Extension suggests planting a batch every ten days for successive flowers. These approaches produce a sequence of blooms, not an uninterrupted display from one planting. Local conditions and bulb preparation can shift the schedule, and the sources do not establish one universal year-round calendar for every region.

Force chilled spring bulbs step by step

  1. Select and pot. Choose firm, sound, flowering-size bulbs. Plant them in a container with drainage holes using well-draining potting medium. Water so the medium is moist, not waterlogged. (University of Illinois Extension.)
  2. Chill the planted pots. Keep them cool and dark for the period required by the species and cultivar. Illinois Extension gives 35–45°F as a typical chilling range for most bulbs; do not store bulbs near ripening fruit such as apples, because ethylene may affect flower development. Check supplier guidance for the bulb you have.
  3. Bring them into growth gradually. After chilling, move pots to a cool place with indirect light. As shoots develop, provide brighter light. Avoid heaters and direct sun while the plants are flowering; cooler conditions help flowers last. (University of Missouri Extension.)
  4. Keep moisture even. Check the medium during chilling and indoor growth. It should not dry out completely, but standing water can damage bulbs and roots.

Grow paperwhites without a long chill

In potting mix

Plant paperwhites in a draining pot with potting mix and water enough to keep the medium lightly moist. Place the pot in good light and, where possible, a cooler spot to discourage weak, stretched growth.

Over gravel or stones

Use a shallow bowl, stones or gravel, and water. Set the bulbs on the support so the water just touches their bases; do not immerse the bulbs. Give them good light and relatively cool conditions. If stems lean or flop, stake them for support. (University of Illinois Extension.)

Optional height control

Illinois Extension describes a Cornell-research-based alcohol treatment intended to reduce paperwhite height. Once shoots are 1–2 inches tall, replace the water with a carefully diluted 4–6% alcohol solution. Follow the dilution directions in the extension guidance; this is optional, not necessary for flowering.

Grow and rebloom Hippeastrum

Plant a prepared Hippeastrum bulb in a draining pot, leaving at least the top third of the bulb above the potting medium. Water thoroughly once, then keep the medium moist but not soggy in a sunny window. When buds show color, moving the pot to a cooler place out of direct sun can extend the flower display. (University of Illinois Extension.)

After flowering, remove fading flowers but leave the flower stalk until it yellows. Retain the leaves so they can build energy for a future bloom. During active growth, continue watering and feeding. If the plant spends summer outside, bring it indoors before frost. A cool, dark rest of about eight to twelve weeks can help control bloom timing, but Illinois Extension notes that dormancy is not strictly required for rebloom.

What to expect after forced spring bulbs flower

Do not count on forced tulips, hyacinths or daffodils flowering reliably indoors again the following year. If you want to try saving hardy bulbs, let the foliage mature before removing it, then dry and store the bulbs as directed before planting outdoors. Illinois Extension says a forced bulb may take one to two years to flower again outdoors. Missouri Extension notes that daffodils and crocus can naturalize more readily, while tulips may not return reliably and hyacinths can be less robust. (Illinois Extension; Missouri Extension.)
