To build a geodesic dome in a desert setting, start with a plan matched to the structure’s purpose, size, climate exposure, and anchoring needs. A small model or temporary event shelter is a very different project from an enclosed, occupied building: there is no universal strut schedule or connector design, and event-building tips are not a substitute for engineered plans.
Choose the kind of dome you are building
Decide whether you want a learning model, temporary event shelter, greenhouse or season-extending structure, or an occupied building. Then establish the intended diameter, design or frequency, exposure to wind and weather, and whether the structure will be temporary or permanent. These choices determine the strut lengths, connector geometry, frame, anchoring or foundation, and enclosure.
The Desert Domes site focuses on geodesic-dome construction and documents an author’s Burning Man dome; its practical recommendations are best understood in that event context. Its FAQ does not provide one structural design that applies to every desert site or use. See Desert Domes’ Frequently Asked Questions and its site overview.
Get a plan before buying or cutting materials
Use a design that specifies the number and length of each strut, the connector geometry, fasteners, assembly sequence, and anchoring or foundation details. A strut’s finished length depends on how it connects: flattened ends, bolt locations, or insertion into a fitting can change the cut length. Follow the selected plan’s dimensions rather than borrowing a measurement from a different dome.

- Stainless steel metalwork
- Automotive Grade, UV resistant plastic
For a beginner, the Desert Domes FAQ suggests building a small model first with 1/8-inch wooden dowels, clear vinyl tubing with a 1/8-inch inner diameter, and small nuts and bolts. A model lets you learn how the joints meet and how the assembly fits together before working with full-size materials. Treat those sizes as the FAQ’s model example, not as specifications for a full-scale frame.
Select frame materials for the actual design
For its small and event-dome use case, the Desert Domes FAQ favors metal conduit over PVC. It says 1/2-inch conduit is acceptable for smaller domes when struts are no longer than four feet, and recommends at least 3/4-inch conduit for larger domes. These are recommendations from an older event-building FAQ, not engineering rules for a dwelling or a guarantee of performance in particular wind conditions.

Confirm the material, size, strut schedule, and connection method against the specific plan before purchasing. The FAQ notes that connection details affect finished strut length. Its conduit guidance does not establish a universal bill of materials or structural capacity.
Build and connect the frame to the plan
- Lay out and label the struts. Cut each member to the length and quantity in the chosen design, accounting for its specified connection detail.
- Prepare the joints. Use the plan’s connector type and fasteners. The Desert Domes FAQ describes flattening and drilling conduit ends as one possible connection approach; that example is not a complete connector specification for every design.
- Assemble in the specified order. Follow the plan’s sequence and fastener details so the intended geometry is maintained. Do not assume that a connector or assembly sequence from another dome will fit.
- Anchor for the site and use. The FAQ recounts using rebar stakes at alternating base points for an event installation. That is a site-specific example, not universal anchoring advice. Select an anchoring method appropriate to the ground, exposure, design, and local requirements.
For an enclosed or occupied dome, plan a building project
A frame alone does not make a habitable structure. The scope can include foundation, utilities, framing, weather sealing, roofing, insulation, heating and cooling, plumbing, and electrical work. Those systems affect one another and need to be addressed as part of a complete design, not added as an afterthought.

The University of Wyoming Extension lists A Users Guide to Building a 22-ft Diameter 2V Geodesic Dome: A Construction Manual for Anyone, by Jeff Edwards, dated August 31, 2025. The publication record describes a complete construction and assembly manual for a passive enclosed, season-extending structure. Its specified 22-foot, 2V design is one documented option, not a universal desert-home plan.
For an occupied building, have the design reviewed by appropriately qualified local professionals and check applicable building codes, permits, fire and life-safety requirements, wind conditions, and land-use rules. Requirements depend on the site and intended occupancy. The construction overview from Dodeca Domes also illustrates the breadth of work involved in a permanent dome, from foundation and framing through the envelope and utilities.

Compare project types before committing
| Project | Typical goal | Documentation and structure | Site and building considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model | Learn the geometry and assembly | Small-scale pieces and simple joints; the Desert Domes FAQ suggests dowels, tubing, and small nuts and bolts. | Not an occupied structure or a test of full-scale structural performance. |
| Temporary event dome | Provide temporary shelter | Use a plan with exact strut and connector details; the Desert Domes FAQ offers event-context conduit and anchoring examples. | Anchoring must suit the ground and exposure. Event guidance does not establish dwelling compliance or site-specific engineering. |
| Enclosed or occupied dome | Provide a greenhouse, season-extending space, or building | Requires a complete construction design covering the frame and enclosure; the University of Wyoming Extension lists a 22-foot, 2V manual. | Plan for foundation, weather sealing, utilities, life safety, permits, and local professional review as applicable. |
If considering a commercial kit, compare what is included, whether engineering documents are supplied, suitability for the local climate, component availability, and whether foundation and enclosure are part of the package. No specific kit specifications or prices are established here.
