On a standard hand hacksaw, the teeth face forward, away from the handle. This lets the saw cut on the forward push stroke: press as you push and ease off as you pull back.
How to fit the blade
- Check the blade and frame instructions for any direction arrow. If there is one, follow it; Armeg’s blade-change instructions, for example, say to fit the blade with its arrows facing forwards: Armeg’s 12-inch hacksaw instructions.
- Mount the blade so its teeth point away from the handle, toward the direction of the cut. This is the standard orientation described in Bharat Skills’ machinist training material and NASA’s hand-tool guidance.
- Secure the blade straight and tension it properly in the frame, then clamp the workpiece before cutting. Use the full blade length for each stroke, pressing on the forward stroke and easing pressure on the return. CCOHS hand-tool guidance also recommends pointing the teeth forward and using the full blade length.
Why the teeth point away from the handle
A standard hand hacksaw cuts as it moves forward, so the teeth face in that direction. With the handle behind the blade, forward means away from the handle. The Bharat Skills manual and NASA guidance both describe this orientation and the push-stroke cutting action.
When replacing a blade
Make sure the replacement fits your particular frame. Blade length, width and mounting-pin fit need to match; the 12-inch blade shown with Armeg’s 12-inch frame is one product example, not a universal hacksaw size. Choose tooth pitch for the material and its thickness rather than assuming one pitch suits every job.
