A mobile base can free up floor space and make a workshop easier to reconfigure, but the right choice depends on whether it fits the machine, supports its load, rolls well on your floor, and holds the machine steady when you work. WOOD Magazine’s September 13, 2023 comparison describes four adjustable-frame bases and one kit built around a custom-cut plywood platform. The specifications below are those published in that article—not independent test results or confirmation of current product availability.
Compare the five mobile bases
| Option | Adjustment or platform | Published capacity | Mobility and stability details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rockler All-Terrain Mobile Base, no. 22672 | 18 × 18 to 28 × 28 in.; optional longer rails for larger sizes | 800 lb | Four 5-in. heavy-duty casters, all lock; described as suitable for cracks, debris, and rough surfaces. |
| WEN Universal Mobile Base, no. MB500 | 11 × 11 to 35 × 35 in., depending on assembly; can be assembled as a rectangle | 500 lb | The article notes some flex as side length increases. |
| Grizzly Bear Crawl Cub, no. T28922 | 14 × 14 to 22½ × 22½ in.; aluminum bars slide in corner assemblies | 1,200 lb | Urethane-coated steel wheels stay in contact with the floor; adjustable front pads press down to hold the base stationary. |
| WoodRiver WR1500, no. 148515 | 12 × 12 to 18 × 50 in., depending on rail assembly | 400 lb | Foot levers raise two swiveling casters for mobility; adjustable pads hold the base stationary in use. |
| Bora Customizable Mobile Base, no. PM-1100 | User cuts a ¾-in. plywood platform to the desired shape and size | Up to 400 lb | Caster assemblies attach around the plywood platform with included screws and threaded holes. |

Choose by machine fit and shop layout
For a standard square footprint
Rockler and Grizzly describe square adjustment ranges. Measure the machine’s base or mounting footprint and compare it with the stated range before choosing; a base that is too small or too large may not support the machine as intended. Rockler’s reported 18 × 18-in. minimum is larger than the minimums reported for WEN, Grizzly, and WoodRiver, while its optional longer rails may accommodate larger footprints.
For a wider or rectangular footprint
WoodRiver’s stated adjustment reaches 18 × 50 in. depending on rail assembly, and WEN can be assembled as a rectangle. WEN’s article-reported flex at longer side lengths is worth considering when a machine’s footprint requires an extended configuration. Confirm how the base is assembled and whether the machine’s feet or mounting points are supported before loading it.

#1 Best Overall
- Supports Up To 400lbs: Easily move heavy shop equipment - perfect for a table saw, bandsaw & workbenches. Built tough for securely moving large tools in workshops.
- Easy-Install Mounting Design: Quickly attach this Bora mobile base by securing each pre-drilled corner to a piece of plywood - move your tools in minutes.
- Custom Size Flexibility: Build your exact base size using standard 3/4" plywood (not included) as your mobile tool base - from benchtop tools to large machinery.
- Quick-Lock Wheel System: Control equipment stability instantly with easy-access foot levers - premium 3" casters ensure reliable mobility in any workshop environment
- Efficient Space Use: Transform any workshop into a flexible workspace - roll equipment exactly where you need it & store it compactly when projects are done to increase your productivity.
For an oddly shaped machine, cabinet, or bench
Bora takes a different approach: cut ¾-in. plywood to the required outline and size, then sandwich it between the caster assemblies using the included screws and threaded holes. This can suit equipment that does not match a conventional rectangular frame, but the platform shape does not remove the need to check load, support, and stability.
Match capacity to the machine and its use
Among the five figures published by WOOD Magazine, Grizzly Bear Crawl Cub has the highest stated capacity at 1,200 lb, followed by Rockler at 800 lb, WEN at 500 lb, and WoodRiver and Bora at 400 lb each (Bora’s figure is stated as up to 400 lb). Treat these as article-reported product specifications, not proof of a tested working load or a recommendation to load a base to its limit.

- Universal Compatibility: Fits most woodworking and metalworking machines, providing versatile mobility solutions for various equipment types
Account for the machine and anything that will remain on it when moved, including stored accessories or work materials. The 2023 comparison does not provide test methods, safety factors, or a separate rating for particular machines, so check current manufacturer instructions and compatibility information before purchase or use.

Rough or debris-prone floors
WOOD Magazine specifically highlights Rockler’s 5-in. heavy-duty casters as able to roll over cracks, debris, and rough surfaces. That makes it the clearest option in this comparison for uneven shop-floor conditions. The article does not give equivalent rough-floor performance claims for the other models.

- Turn your stationary tools into mobile machines, helping you to get the most out of your work space
- Perfect for band saws, table saws, tool chests, cabinets, safes, planers, sanders, jointers, drill presses and more
- Fits square base configurations anywhere from 11.8 by 11.8 inches up to 35.4 by 35.4 inches
- Fits rectangular bases up to 51.2 by 19.7 inches in size
- Features two fixed casters, two swivel casters, two foot-locking brakes, and a two-year warranty
Locking, lifting, and stationary pads
Rockler’s four casters lock. Grizzly’s adjustable front pads press down to hold the base stationary, while WoodRiver uses adjustable pads and foot levers that raise its two swiveling casters for movement. These are different ways of handling mobility and stationary use; assess whether the mechanism is convenient for your workflow and whether the base is firmly stabilized before operating the machine. The comparison does not describe a corresponding locking or pad mechanism for WEN or Bora.

Check before buying or putting a machine on the base
- Measure the machine footprint and compare it with the base’s stated adjustment range or the custom platform dimensions.
- Check the machine’s loaded weight against current manufacturer capacity and use guidance; do not rely on the 2023 article as current verification.
- Consider floor cracks, debris, and surface condition when evaluating caster design.
- Understand how the base is secured for stationary operation, and verify that the machine is stable before use.
- Confirm current model status, availability, compatibility, and specifications with the manufacturer or seller, since WOOD Magazine’s article dates to September 13, 2023.
